Preston Holcombe Murphy was born on 4 January 1842 in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois.3,4,1,5,6 He was the son of John Ecles Murphy and Frances Mary Wright "Franky" Doughty.1,2 Preston became deaf at the age of 6 due to illness. He attended special schools for the deaf, one in California (1864) and the other in Jacksonville Illinois (1850), from the time he was 10.2
