     Helen Simpson was born on 21 May 1820 in Chirnside, Berwickshire,Scotland.1,2 She was the daughter of John Simpson and Margaret Wait.2
     On 24 June 1842, Helen Simpson married John Neilans in Chirnside, Berwickshire County.3
     Helen Neilans and John Neilans appeared on the 1871 Scotish Census of Lauder, Berwickshire, Scotland, at New Mills, enumerated 3 April 1871, reporting Helen as a farmer with 250 acres. Their children Margaret, Thomas, John Simpson, Peter, Isabella and George Steele were listed as living with them.4
     Helen Neilans and John Neilans appeared on the 1881 Scotish Census of Lauder, Berwickshire, at New Mills, enumerated 3 April 1881, reporting John as a farmer with 250 acres employing one (1) man and two (2) women. Their children George Steele, Peter and Thomas were listed as living with them.5
