     The family story is that he was an American sailor or Merchant Marine. He wanted to marry Betsey but was shipped back to the states before he could. When he found out that there was a child he tried to get Bert in Somerset England, but did not succeed. US Citizen probably living on the East Coast, possibly Kentucky. (Unknown) Blanchard was born, Kentucky, Birth place is listed on the 1910 Census of Herbert C. Beard Sr.1 He never married.2
