Fred Elmer Wilbur was born on 14 December 1858 in Bonus Prairie, Boone, Illinois.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Jefferson Wilbur and Elizabeth Ann Trim.
On 9 July 1860, Fred, Clara, Elmira and Ida migrated to in Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska, from left Bonus, Boone County, Illinois and with his parents Jefferson Wilbur and Ann Wilbur. They came in an oxen drawn covered wagon. Because of the value that Jefferson placed on education he chose land in Ponca, even though the acreage cost $7.00 an acre vs $1.25 an acre for Government land, in order for his children would be able to attend school. The School in Ponca was the only school that was near the property. The fact that the family left in July 1860 could be the reason that his family is not found on the census of 1860. They may have been missed by the census taker in both Illinois and Nebraska.6 Jefferson told, in an article from the Dakota City Eagel, of an incident that happened a short distance from Ponca on the day they arrived in Nebraska. This incident reminded Jeff that not all was a bed of roses.
He was on a bank of a stream overlooking the city of Ponca, when he told Fred to fetch him the whiskey jug and they would drink to the city of Ponca. The jug was brought and Jeff was nearly seated, "My God! there coiled a rattle snake, big as a wash tub, and I nearly sat on it." Telling Fred to watch it he got a single tree from the wagon and killed it. The snake had fourteen rattles.6

Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1885 State Census of Daily Branch, Dixon, Nebraska, enumerated 11 June 1885. Their children Claudia Ann and Lulu were listed as living with them.13 Fred Elmer Wilbur was mentioned in the will of his uncle Harrison M. Wilbur on 11 February 1886 in Belvidere, Boone, Illinois. Stephen left 49 acres first to Mary, his wife and then upon her demise the land is to go to Fred.14
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Highland, Garfield, Nebraska, enumerated 10 July 1900, reporting that they owned their farm. Fred's occupation was reported as a Stock Grocer. Their children Elizabeth Verna, Claudia Ann, Florence Rose, Winnefred M and Clara were listed as living with them, living next door was Mamie's sister Jennie and her husband Will Cornell. Also Fred's sister, Maude and her husband Henry Brewer were living next to Will Cornell's family.15

The census also reported that they had 9 children of which 7 were living. Their daughter Winnefred M was listed as living with them, also living with them were Fred's widowed father, Jefferson.2
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska, enumerated 20 April 1920, reporting that they owned a Farm free and clear the family was living a couple of farms away from Mary's sister, Minnie and her husband, Dudley Doan
. Their daughter Clara was listed as living with them, as were her husband, Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison and their son John C.17

Fred Elmer Wilbur supplied the information on the death certificate ofMary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur who died on 2 May 1936; of influenza.9,19
In the obituary of Mary Fleura "Mamie" Conrad dated 7 May 1936 which printed in the Nebraska Journal Leader, circulated in Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska, Fred Elmer Wilbur was mentioned as her husband.11 He attended Ponca Methodist Church Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska.1
Fred Elmer Wilbur left a will filed on 28 September 1938 Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska. Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison was named as the executor. Elizabeth Verna "Bessie" Reinwald, Lulu "Maude" Brewer, Claudia Ann Christian, Florence Rose Johnson, Winnefred M Heydon, Clara Jennison and Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison were mentioned in the will.20
Fred's will states the following:
Last Will and Testament
I, Fred Wilbur of Ponca in the county of Dixon, State of Nebraska, being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last WILL AND TESTAMENT.
FIRST, I order and direct that my Execut or hereinafter named, pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my deceased as convenientyly may be.
SECOND, After the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I give, devise, and bequeath unto my daughter Florence Johson Lots One (1) Two (2) and Three (3) Block Forty-six (46) City of Ponca, Nebraska.
THIRD, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter Clara Jennison and my son in law John Jennison the Southwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter (SW 1/4) NE 1/4) and the Northwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter (NW 1/4 SE 1/4) all in Section Sixteen (16) Township Thirty (30) North, Range Six (6) East of the 6th P. M. Dixon County, Nebraska share and share alike.
FOURTH, All the rest and residue of my property real, personal and mixed I give devise and bequeath unto my daughters Bess Reinwald, Claudelia Christian, Winnie Heydon and Maud Brewer share and share alike.
LASTLY, I make, constitute and appoint my son in law John Jennison to be Execut or of this, my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former will by me made.

Fred Elmer Wilbur died of from colon cancer, at the age of 80, on 14 February 1939 in Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska.4,1,5
Fred was buried on Thursday, 16 February 1939 in the Ponca Cemetery, located in Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska . He is in the NE Section Lot 55 next to his wife Mamie.4,21
Fred Elmer Wilbur's obituary was Nebraska Journal Leader, Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska, on 23 February 1939. He was survived by Elizabeth Verna "Bessie" Wilbur, Lulu "Maude" Brewer, Claudia Ann Wilbur, Florence Rose "Flossie" Wilbur, Clara "Kitty" Wilbur and Winnefred M "Winnie" Wilbur.1

Final rites for Fred E Wilbur, Dixon county pioneer, who died at his home here February 14, were held last Thursday at 2 o'clock from the Ponca Methodist church with the pastor Rev. R. E. Daughetee in charge. Burial was made in the Ponca Cemetery under direction of Mohr's
Mr. Wilbur had been in poor health for some months. His passing takes one of the earliest settlers of the county and one who could recall events of the very earliest days
Fred Elmer Wilbur son of Jefferson and Ann Wilbur was born Dec. 14, 1858 in Boone County ILL, and died at Ponca February 14, 1939 at the age of 81 years and two months.
When he was two years old he traveled in a covered wagon with his parents and they came to Ponca where his father took a homestead a mile and a half northwest of town. He grew up on the farm and attended school until the age of 15. He also attended church and Sunday school.
In the year 1873 he was married to Mary Conrad and to this union seven children were born Two years after their marriage he and his wife moved to Daily Branch where they lived until 1886 when they returned to Ponca. Later they resided in western Nebraska returning to his father's old home in 1903 and lived on that place until 1919 when they again returned to Ponca. Mr. Wilbur made his home here until 1928 when he went to live on his farm west of Martinsburg. He again moved back to this town in 1937.
Survivors include six daughters Cleo having did in infancy The others are Mrs. Henry Brewer of Ponca; Mrs. David Christian, Saskatchewan Canada; Mrs. Henry Reinwald, Salem Ore; Mrs. Louis Johnson, Holler Minn; Mrs Jack Jennison, Ponca and Mrs Edward Hayden Newcastle; a brother and sister, Guy Wilbur and Mrs. Clara Wilbur, Ponca; besides 31 grand children 13 great grandchildren other relatives and a great number of friends.

Stephen left 49 acres first to Mary, his wife and then upon her demise the land is to go to Fred.14
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Highland, Garfield, Nebraska, enumerated 10 July 1900, reporting that they owned their farm. Fred's occupation was reported as a Stock Grocer. Their children Elizabeth Verna, Claudia Ann, Florence Rose, Winnefred M and Clara were listed as living with them, living next door was Mamie's sister Jennie and her husband Will Cornell. Also Fred's sister, Maude and her husband Henry Brewer were living next to Will Cornell's family.15
Fred Elmer Wilbur was mentioned in the will of his father, Jefferson Wilbur filed on 23 August 1904 in Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska. The will also mentions: Clara Wilbur, Elmira Eisenlord "Myra" Wilbur, Ida Wilbur, Frank Wilbur, Minerva Wilbur, Lee Wilbur and John Albert Wilbur.16
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Conrad appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska, enumerated 4 May 1910, reporting that they rented their farm. The census also reported that they had 9 children of which 7 were living. Their daughter Winnefred M was listed as living with them, also living with them were Fred's widowed father, Jefferson.2
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska, enumerated 20 April 1920, reporting that they owned a Farm free and clear the family was living a couple of farms away from Mary's sister, Minnie and her husband, Dudley Doan
. Their daughter Clara was listed as living with them, as were her husband, Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison and their son John C.17
Fred Elmer Wilbur and Mary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Galen, Dixon, Nebraska, enumerated 9 April 1930, reporting that they owned their farm and had a radio.18
Fred Elmer Wilbur supplied the information on the death certificate ofMary Fleura "Mamie" Wilbur who died on 2 May 1936; of influenza.9,19
In the obituary of Mary Fleura "Mamie" Conrad dated 7 May 1936 which printed in the Nebraska Journal Leader, circulated in Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska, Fred Elmer Wilbur was mentioned as her husband.11 He attended Ponca Methodist Church Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska.1
Fred Elmer Wilbur left a will filed on 28 September 1938 Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska. Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison was named as the executor. Elizabeth Verna "Bessie" Reinwald, Lulu "Maude" Brewer, Claudia Ann Christian, Florence Rose Johnson, Winnefred M Heydon, Clara Jennison and Jack Percy Greenwood Jennison were mentioned in the will.20
Fred's will states the following:
Last Will and Testament
I, Fred Wilbur of Ponca in the county of Dixon, State of Nebraska, being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last WILL AND TESTAMENT.
FIRST, I order and direct that my Execut or hereinafter named, pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my deceased as convenientyly may be.
SECOND, After the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I give, devise, and bequeath unto my daughter Florence Johson Lots One (1) Two (2) and Three (3) Block Forty-six (46) City of Ponca, Nebraska.
THIRD, I give, devise and bequeath unto my daughter Clara Jennison and my son in law John Jennison the Southwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter (SW 1/4) NE 1/4) and the Northwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter (NW 1/4 SE 1/4) all in Section Sixteen (16) Township Thirty (30) North, Range Six (6) East of the 6th P. M. Dixon County, Nebraska share and share alike.
FOURTH, All the rest and residue of my property real, personal and mixed I give devise and bequeath unto my daughters Bess Reinwald, Claudelia Christian, Winnie Heydon and Maud Brewer share and share alike.
LASTLY, I make, constitute and appoint my son in law John Jennison to be Execut or of this, my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former will by me made.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affexed my seal the 28th day of September, inn the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred thirty-eight.

Fred Elmer Wilbur died of from colon cancer, at the age of 80, on 14 February 1939 in Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska.4,1,5
Fred was buried on Thursday, 16 February 1939 in the Ponca Cemetery, located in Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska . He is in the NE Section Lot 55 next to his wife Mamie.4,21
Fred Elmer Wilbur's obituary was Nebraska Journal Leader, Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska, on 23 February 1939. He was survived by Elizabeth Verna "Bessie" Wilbur, Lulu "Maude" Brewer, Claudia Ann Wilbur, Florence Rose "Flossie" Wilbur, Clara "Kitty" Wilbur and Winnefred M "Winnie" Wilbur.1

Last Rites Conducted for Fred E. Wilbur
Final rites for Fred E Wilbur, Dixon county pioneer, who died at his home here February 14, were held last Thursday at 2 o'clock from the Ponca Methodist church with the pastor Rev. R. E. Daughetee in charge. Burial was made in the Ponca Cemetery under direction of Mohr's
Mr. Wilbur had been in poor health for some months. His passing takes one of the earliest settlers of the county and one who could recall events of the very earliest days
Fred Elmer Wilbur son of Jefferson and Ann Wilbur was born Dec. 14, 1858 in Boone County ILL, and died at Ponca February 14, 1939 at the age of 81 years and two months.
When he was two years old he traveled in a covered wagon with his parents and they came to Ponca where his father took a homestead a mile and a half northwest of town. He grew up on the farm and attended school until the age of 15. He also attended church and Sunday school.
In the year 1873 he was married to Mary Conrad and to this union seven children were born Two years after their marriage he and his wife moved to Daily Branch where they lived until 1886 when they returned to Ponca. Later they resided in western Nebraska returning to his father's old home in 1903 and lived on that place until 1919 when they again returned to Ponca. Mr. Wilbur made his home here until 1928 when he went to live on his farm west of Martinsburg. He again moved back to this town in 1937.
Survivors include six daughters Cleo having did in infancy The others are Mrs. Henry Brewer of Ponca; Mrs. David Christian, Saskatchewan Canada; Mrs. Henry Reinwald, Salem Ore; Mrs. Louis Johnson, Holler Minn; Mrs Jack Jennison, Ponca and Mrs Edward Hayden Newcastle; a brother and sister, Guy Wilbur and Mrs. Clara Wilbur, Ponca; besides 31 grand children 13 great grandchildren other relatives and a great number of friends.
