![]() The Homestead and the William Larimer Jones, May 21, 1949 Welcome Week Steamboat Races in Pittsburgh As part of Pittsburgh's Welcome Week festivities in 1949, 1950 and 1951, steamboat races were held in with an estimated crowds between 200,000 to 250,000 people. Along with the boat races, there were numerous other activities such as powerboat races and concerts. I have initially concentrated on the 1949 steamboat race, but will provide much more information in the coming weeks on Pittsburgh's Welcome Week activities. I have dedicated a separate page to each year's race with the year 1949 containing recordings of the live radio broadcast of the race with interviews with many of the main participates. There are also numerous links to newspaper articles concerning the race and the activates associated with Welcome Week. I hope you enjoy the site. Bob Hanna
