NOTES:
This Moore tree is so large, with all it's research notes included, that if printed out it would take 150 sheets of paper.
The family descendancy is therefore difficult to follow.  I have created a redaction to make it easier.
But you can view it in both formats.  Also, there is a link to Jonathan MOORE on this page.

******Susannah MOORE, mother of James Moore

Children of William MOORE (I) and Susannah (---) were as follows:
+ 2 i James2 MOORE [1222], born abt 1735; died aft 12 Jan 1782 in , SC.  He married Rebecca Anne DAVIS [1223].
3 ii William2 MOORE (II) [2455], died bef 4 Jan 1791.  He married  unknown.   BIOGRAPHICAL:  **Biographical Directory of SC House of Representatives, Vol 3, p 511:  Moore, William (Moor). (39)  William Moore was a resident of Ninety Six District.  A tax return in 1787 listed 233 acres as his taxable property.  He represented his home district in the Second Provincial Congress (1775-1776) and First General Assembly (1776) and was a member of the Second General Assembly (1776-1778). Serving Ninety Six District in the Third General Assembly (1779-1780), he was elected sheriff of Ninety Six District and resigned from the House in February 1779.  Ninety Six District later elected him to the Fifth (1783-1784) and Sixth (1785-1786) General Assemblies; however, he declined to serve in the latter assembly.  Other offices held by William Moore included the following: official to receive rice and flour at Ninety Six (ca.1775); road commissioner (1778); trustee for a public school at the town of Ninety Six and for laying out said town (1783); commissioner, for repairing and rebuilding the courthouse and jail in Ninety Six District (1783); tax inquirer and collector for Ninety Six District (1785); justice of the peace for Abbeville County (1785); escheator for Ninety Six District (1787); and delegate for Ninety Six District at the state constitutional convention (1790).  Sources:  Aud. (39) Possibly, the William Moore who served in the House was the William Moore, Esq., who lived in Cambridge, Abbeville District, and died sometime before 4 Mar 1791 when an inventory of his estate was taken.  He owned 130 acres, 2 lots and buildings in Cambridge, and 15 slaves in addition to various liquors and notions.  However, as there were several William Moores who lived in Abbeville District and throughout Ninety Six District (Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens, and Spartanburg counties), it was impossible to determine which individual was the legislator.  Wills, inventories, estate papers, and land records tended to cloud the issue.  The federal census listed seven William Moores in Ninety Six District in 1790 and ten years later recorded thirteen.  Therefore, the editors utilized only the data which most likely referred to the legislator.  Sources: Abbeville Co. Notes for James MOORE
 BIOGRAPHICAL:

**Biographical Directory of SC House of Representatives, Vol 3, p 508:  Moore, James. (38)  James Moore represented Ninety Six District in the second (1776-1778), Third (1779-1780), and Fourth (1782) General Assemblies.  He also served as tax inquirer and collector for Ninety Six District (1778) and commissioner, for a road to Saluda ferries (1778). Sources:  Grand Jury Lists, 1777, 1779.  Petit Jury Lists, 1777, 1779, SCHM, 34: 202.  SC Statues, 4: 417; 9: 256-62.  (38) The individual who served in the House could have been the James Moore of Ninety Six District who died in 1782.  Writing his will 12 Jan 1780, he mentioned his wife, Ann, his mother, Susanna, and four sons - Davis, James, Jonathan, and William Drayton.  He was deceased by 23 September 1782 when his will was proved.  An inventory of his estate revealed he owned twenty-five slaves.  However, according to extant records, there were several James Moores who lived in Ninety Six District in the late eighteenth century.  As none of the sources indicated legislative service, it was impossible to determine which man, if any, served in the House.  Sources: Abbeville Co. James Moore's Company in Col. Leroy Hammond's Regiment & went on the Expedition to Florida.

Collections of Early County Historical Society 1979, Vol 2, p 458: Moore Family of South Carolina. Family tradition, supported by research, reinforced the opinion that James Moore, who lived in Ninety-Six Dist., S.C. and who saw Revolutionary service, was a great-grandson of James Moore, Governor of S.C., 1700-02. The line is traced through James Moore I, governor; his son James Moore II, also governor of the colony; and his grandson James Moore III, then to James Moore IV of Ninety-Six. This seemed correct until the will of James Moore IV, dated 1-2-1780, Abbeville Dist, S.C., came to light giving the name of his mother Susannah, while James Moore III's wife was Sarah Waring.  Despite the confusion it is still possible that he decended from the first James Moore as the records are incomplete. The will for this Revolutionary soldier, who was killed at his home by a Tory is abstracted as follows:... from family records of Benjamin M. Hines.
