BULKINGTON IN 1851

In 1851 there were 485 households in Bulkington with 2005 inhabitants (1019 female, 986 male), almost exactly 4 per household. If Bulkington “locals” are defined as those born in Barnacle/Bulkington/Ryton/Weston then there were 619 outsiders living there at the time of the census.

The major source of employment in the village was related to weaving (418) of which the largest single identified group was hand loom weaver (silk) at 276. One notable item is the range and number (138) of people who could broadly be regarded as “in trade” and this includes a “baker and dentist” (hard bread perhaps?)!
