HAZLEWOOD/HASLEWOOD/HASELLWOOD ETC

Origin: Ernald de Heselwude or residence near a hazelwood

The main midlands branch of the family seem to have been the Northampton Hazlewoods who were based at Maidwell where Sir Anthony was a Knight in the 1500s. They were involved in land transactions in Weston, Wappenham and Weedon, owned lands in Warwickshire and were marrying into families in Leicestershire. There is however no known direct connection with my ancestors who emerged in Hanwell (Oxfordshire) just over the Northants border in the late 1500s. In the early 1600s they moved to the next village, Cropredy, where the family lived into the 1800s. One branch of the Cropredy family moved into Warwickshire (Withybrook), another (mine) into Northamptonshire (Staverton)
