The cost of goods and pay rates varied significantly from place to place and over time (they had inflation and deflation as we do today) so inevitably this information can only be a guide to what things cost and what people earned. It does however give a feel for relative costs and earnings and a pointer to what food was available in the past (did you know rice was available in 1400?). To simplify matters I have roughly converted all costs which were in old shillings and pence to modern "p" and converted wages (unless otherwise stated) to an annual £ equivalent.
If you can add any information on costs or earnings then I would be pleased to receive it and will add it to the tables.
