KENDALL/KENDELL/KINDLE/CENDOLE etc

Origin: From Sir John de Kendale of Kendal Westmorland

Two main branches of the family spread from Westmorland, one to Cornwall, the other, in 1301, to a group of manors on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire/Warwickshire borders (Shepshed, Twycross, Snibston, Blaby, Austrey, Smithsby). From this midlands location the name spread across the midland counties while retaining a strong presence within the locality of the original manors.

The Kendall manor house at Smisby still remains (though now a hotel) and the adjacent church contains an impressive memorial to Henry Kendall, his wife and 16 children dated 1627.

The "manorial" Kendalls are well documented in "The Kendalls of Austrey, Twycross and Smithsby" (copy held at Society of Genealogists). Unfortunately, my branch, the Kendalls of Sutton Cheney (Leicestershire) were by the late 1600s removed from their manorial roots and are not well documented! William Kendall married Mary Sands in Sutton Cheney in 1687 and neither family appears in the Parish Registers before that date. To date I have been unable to trace either William or Mary further. All the William Kendalls found so far born 1660-1670 either die or can be accounted for by other marriages.

Any sightings of William Kendall or Mary Sands born between 1660 and 1670 in Warwickshire or Leicestershire would be appreciated.
