Isaac Sloan ROCHELLE & Eleanor Olivia RHODES

Isaac Sloan ROCHELLE, b. 16 May 1872 in Magnolia, Duplin Co., N.C.; was the son of Benjamin ROCHELLE of Pender Co. and Indianna SLOAN of Duplin Co.

Eleanor Olivia RHODES, b. 24 September 1876 in Lenoir Co., N.C. was the daughter of Zacheous RHODES and his wife Mary Elizabeth James RHODES, both of the Tuckahoe District of Jones Co., N.C.

"Ike" and "Lena" were married 23 May 1894 at the home of her mother and father Zack & Eliza RHODES in Kinston, Lenoir Co., N.C. On their 50th wedding anniversary an article written in the Kinston Daily Free Press, dated May 24, 1955; recalls their wedding as follows: "Her white wedding dress touched the floor, and was trimmed in ribbon and lace with bows down the front & on the skirt. They were married by the late Mr. Emmett TYNDALL, Justice of the Peace. Two of Mrs. ROCHELLE'S six bridesmaids were Mrs. Alfie Moseley PATRICK of Mewborn Crossroads and Mrs. Clemmie SPARKS of Robersonville. Following the ceremony, guests went to the ROCHELLE farm home at Falling Creek for a wedding supper and square dance. Mr. ROCHELLE was a farmer when he was married but moved to Kinston from the country 56 years ago. Born in Lenoir Co. and married at age 17, Mrs. Lena ROCHELLE is now 78 years old. Her husband was born in Magnolia and is five years her senoir. Along with farming, Mr. ROCHELLE was also a carpenter & contractor, building many homes and buildings in the Kinston area. Among his several sidelines were a sawmill which was on the Grainger High School site, and a veterinary medicine practice. The couple became parents of eight children of whom two died in infancy. "

They had the following children: 1)James Marvin ROCHELLE, b. 27 April 1897 2)Minnie Lou ROCHELLE, b. 26 July 1906 3)Benjamin Hansen ROCHELLE, b. 25 July 1907 4)Isaac Fred ROCHELLE, b. 2 April 1908 5)Zollie Allison ROCHELLE, b. 11 Oct. 1912 6)Zee Rhodes ROCHELLE, b. 14 June 1914 7)Mary Anna ROCHELLE 8)Eleanor Kate ROCHELLE, b. 8 May 1920.

Isaac Sloan ROCHELLE died 23 Feb. 1961, and is buried in Maplewood Cemetary in Kinston. Eleanor Olivia Rhodes ROCHELLE, died 10 November 1955 and is buried next to her husband in Maplewood Cemetary.

Ike and Lena were members of the Universalist Church in Kinston, and helped start the church.

Ike Rochelle built the Universalist Church in Kinston. Most of the congregation were family members. Ike is pictured on the far left with hat in hand.

The Rochelle house on Grainger Ave., Kinston, N.C. (still standing) Ike ROCHELLE built this house and lived in it with his family until the depression. He is standing on the porch near his mule. All the land around this area was farm land at that time.

The Depression hit the ROCHELLE family hard. They lost all their money and their home; but not their spirit or family. This is a picture of Ike & Lena's children, adopted children and their husband's, wife's and grandchildren. It also shows the house they had to move to shortly after the depression. The picture was taken about 1935.

This picture was sent to my family probably long before 1927. On the back is written Mrs. John ROCHELLE, Jacksonville. (Onslow Co., N.C.) If anyone knows who this child is or how this family is related; please let me know.
