Susan Carolina RHODES
Susan Carolina RHODES, was born 25 February 1830 to Rev. James J. RHODES. (His wife is unknown, but she may possibly have been Josphine SHAW) and died Oct. 4, 1906 in Jones Co., N.C.
Susan Carolina RHODES married William M. KOONCE, b. Nov. 28, 1829 in Jones Co., N.C. and died March 28, 1902. Their children were:- Nancy KOONCE, b. May 22, 1850-d. Dec. 4, 1920;
- Mary Elizabeth KOONCE, b. August 1856;
- Virginia C. KOONCE, b. abt. 1856
- James Louis KOONCE, Oct. 12, 1857-d. Nov. 7, 1931
- David Usher KOONCE, b. Dec. 15, 1861-d. May 20, 1937
- Della A. KOONCE, b. July 1865
- Luther KOONCE, b. abt. 1867
William and Susan Rhodes KOONCE were married when the 1850 census was taken, they were both age 20 and living in the Trenton District next door to William's parents.
The names of William and Susan KOONCE were found on the marriage license of their daughter Nancy BANKS and Thomas SMITH.
On the 1880 Censs, William KOONCE is 50 years old, works as a carpenter and a wheel wright. Living with him in Pollocksville Village is his wife Susan C, age 50, his son D. Usher KOONCE age 18, single and works with his father in the shop. His daughter Della S., age 15 is attending school.
Living with them are the following boarders:
Mary DUVAL, white female age 40, unmarried.
James W. PERRY, singe white male, age 40, who works as a merchant general dealer.
Jonathan J. KINNEY, singe white male, age 40, who works as a house carpenter.
Francina BRYAN, single black female, age 19, who works as a cook in the boarding house.
G. M. MORRISON, a single white male, age 46, is a physician.
William KOONCE was not alive at the time Susan Rhodes KOONCE wrote her will in 1902, but apparently had not been long deceased since in her will, she included that his funeral expenses be paid out of the estate.
William's grave was later found in the Pollocksville Cemetery, next to that of his wife and three of their children with their dates of birth and death inscribed.
