HANBY United in marriage Jan. 1877
ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE PECK HANBY was the first child of Joseph Addison Peck and Ellen Baker Peck. She was born in Giles County, Virginia, on July 15, 1855. She lived with her parents in Virginia until her marriage to PETER SHARP HANBY on January 9, 1877. Following the birth of their first child on October 22, 1877, Peter and Elizabeth moved to Texas to join her parents and siblings who had migrated there in early 1877. In the early 1880's Peter and Elizabeth bought land in Rockwall County, Texas, and resided on that property until their deaths. Elizabeth and Peter were the parents of a total of nine children, the youngest being three weeks old, when he died. This left Elizabeth a widow at age 36 nine children ranging in age from three weeks to fourteen years ... and the fourteen-year-old was a seriously handicapped boy. A partial copy of her obituary reads: "Mrs. Lizzie P. Hanby was born in Giles County, Virginia, June 15, 1854, and died at her home in Rockwall County, Texas, December 2, 1931, aged 76 years, six months and 12 days. Daughter of Joseph A. and Ellen Baker Peck, whose ancestors were pioneer settlers in Virginia and received large land grants from the King of England... She was married to Peter S. Hanby in Virginia in the latter part of 1876 and came to Texas early in 1877. [sic] Her husband passed away in 1891. To them were born nine children, seven of whom survive her: Walter Hanby, Lee (d. 1906) Nona, Mrs. Gussie Boyd, Allie, Carl, Clinard, Henry, and Jean (d. 1917). There are twelve grandchildren. With her parents and her sister and brothers, her life for fifty-five years was in the community where the family settled on coming to Texas. Of sterling family, she adorned and ennobled her wifehood and her motherhood, and profession of faith in the Christian religion. In early life she was baptized into Christ and was a member of the Church of Christ. Left a widow with a young family, she maintained and loved her home, and would sacrifice everything for her children, who with filial devotion feel that they could never repay their indebtedness to her motherly care and affection. In the old days her parents were slave owners and she always had a deep sympathy and interest in the colored people about her. She was neighborly in sickness and in health, and had a special interest and helpfulness with the newborn babies of her friends. She was considerate and helpful to the poor ... Burial was in the Peck Cemetery ... Dr. S. M. Templeton conducted the funeral services." f y ..k |
