Walter  Peck Hanby was the oldest child of Peter Sharp Hanby and Elizabeth Josephine Peck Hanby. He was born in Virginia and traveled to Texas soon after his birth. [I that

Elizabeth's pregnancy delayed their trip to Texas to join the rest of her family.] There are four letters from Peter Hanby in Virginia to his brother-in-law Joe Peck  [Joseph Vawter Peck] in Texas discussing conditions in

Virginia and his plans for joining him in Texas in the late fall of 1877. Walter had a cerebral palsy type condition and he never married. According to his sister, Nora McChesney Hanby, "He, when a baby, had a terrible spasm caused by Mack South feeding him some -frost bitten sweet potatoes. Mammy didn't know they were not good until after they were cooked. She left them in the oven of the cook stove. Mack South found them and ate some himself and gave             Walter (who was about seven months old, I think) some. Dr. Ford said that was the cause. The spasms lasted about three hours and left a blood clot on the brain, which caused.  The spasms lasted about three hours and left a blood clot on the brain, which caused him to be paralyzed in the right side, also an impaired mind. His height was about five feet four mother died in 1931, Walter, who was nicknamed "Nooks," lived with his Augusta Leigh Hanby Boyd.  In Elizabeth Peck Hanby's will she wrote, "Try to be patient with  Nookie" and "One of my $500.00 bonds is for... whoever takes Nookie and whoever does is to have his interest in the land." Walter died on March 26, 1946. [1 remember being in the background or in his room when I visited Aunt Gus' house near Heath. He rarely spoke and was difficult to understand when he did. He also roamed about in the pastures near the house searching for eggs from his numerous banty chickens.] A partial copy of Walter's obituary reads:
