AUGUSTA LEIGH HANBY BOYD

Tombstone reads:

Augusta Leigh Hanby Boyd

 June 24, 1883

July 10, 1962

AUGUSTA LEIGH HANBY BOYD married

 FRANK BOYD (b. 03-01-1881; d. 10-25-1917)

 on November 10, 1904. They were the parents

 of Bonnie Elizabeth Boyd (b. 09-18-1905; d. 05-04-1980);

Jeff Clinard Boyd (b. 07-17-1909; d. 12-25-1986);

and Jean Frank Boyd McCole (b. 12-09-1917).

 Bonnie Elizabeth never married. Jeff Clinard married Bonnie

Lee Wilkie on 02-03-1934 and they were the parents of Erin

Ray Boyd (b. 09-19-1934) and  Wilkie Hugh Boyd (b. 1945?).

 Jean Frank married Colbert "Lum" McCole on June 2, 1934

and they were the parents of Joe Frank McCole (03-11-1935);

and Sandra.

Frank Boyd was killed in an automobile accident  when a tree

 fell on the car he was driving to the  State Fair of Texas.

 According to a written report  by Bonnie Ruth Hanby

Raphael, "In 1917 [October 25]a trip was planned to go to the

State Fair, Dallas. The group went in a Model T Ford with the

 "top" down. Uncle Frank Boyd, my Dad [Carl Frederick Hanby]

and Aunt Jean [Jean Kathleen Hanby] were in the front seat. Aunt Nona [Nora McChesney Hanby], Aunt Allie [Alma Vawter Hanby], Bonnie 11 yrs [Bonnie Elizabeth Boyd] and Jeff [Jeff Clinard Boyd] 8 years were in the back. The high wind blew a "roadside" dead tree over on the car as it was passing. The three had only two limbs - one limb hit the front seat. The other limb hit the back seat. Uncle Frank and Aunt Jean were killed instantly. Bonnie was injured very badly. She had an untold number of concussions. For days she wasn't expected to live. She was left a cripple and limped the rest of her life..." Augusta Leigh Boyd was left a widow at age 34 with a seriously

 injured daughter. She gave birth to Jean Frank only six weeks after the death of her husband; her pregnancy was the reason she was not also in the car wreck. Her niece, Bonnie Ruth Hanby Raphael, described her as "...sweet Aunt Guss...She was an exceptionally kind, sweet and patient person. She was always ready to help anyone who needed her in any way. This seems to be well-proven by her lifelong care of her injured daughter, Bonnie Elizabeth; her taking over the care of her brother Henry's son, Henry Lee, after his mother died; and her care of her handicapped brother, Walter Peck Hanby from the time their mother died (1931) until his death in 1946. A partial copy of Augusta Leigh Hanby Boyd's obituary reads: "Death Claims Mrs. Frank Boyd Lifelong County Resident. Mrs. Augusta Leigh Boyd passed away ... July 10, 1962, at her home after a short

illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Boyd were held  ….at the Methodist Church in Heath. Born June 24, 1883, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Peck Hanby. She had been a lifelong resident of Rockwall County. On November 14, 1904, she was married to Mr. Frank Boyd and they were the parents of four children. Her husband preceded her in death in 1917 as well as one child. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the Church of Christ ... Interment was in Peck Cemetery ... Pallbearers were Josh Graem, C. R. Terry, R. E. Anderson, J. W. Cullins, George Wilkie, and Clifford Hall."       Back            Home
