JEAN KATHLEEN HANBY
Tombstone reads: Jean Hanby Sept. 6, 1891 Oct. 25, 1917
JEAN KATHLEEN HANBY was born on September 6, 1891, three weeks before her father, Peter Sharp Hanby died. Therefore, she was the ninth and last child of Peter and Elizabeth Josephine Peck Hanby. Jean never married and died in the aforementioned car wreck when she was 26 years old. Her sister, Nora McChesney Hanby, described her, "...Jean had no special gift that I know of, except she could do any thing she under took and could do it well. She was very musical and played the organ and guitar. She taught school and was especially good at discipline. She weighed 84 pounds and was about 4 feet 11 inches. Her nieces, Ellen Beverly Hanby Matthews and Augusta Lee Hanby Key, remember a trunk of her clothes and shoes which were wonderful for playing dress-up since she had been such a tiny adult. Her niece, Bonnie Ruth Hanby Raphael wrote this about her: "Jean Kathleen, the youngest, was born three weeks before her father died. She was musical - played organ, mandolin, and guitar. She taught school at Heath. She was the happy-go-lucky type. She said she let Nona [her sister, Nora McChesney Hanby] worry for her.
