From Velva Retzlaff:
"Ray Inghram came with his parents, William and Margaret Inghram to the Black Hills, settling at Old Crook City between Whitewood, SD and Deadwood SD. They originally came from West Virginia about 1857/58 by wagon train. It took them approximately 10 or 11 years to cross the prairie by way of Nebraska.
Ray was born in Lincoln Nebraska and was around 2 years old when they reached the Black Hills in about 1880. Soon they moved on to take squatters rights on the Belle Fourche River where the town of Nisland SD is now. Ray grew up and went to a school there, which was later known as the Hillside School.
Ray came with his oldest brother John to the Deep Creek and Bixby area in 1893. His mother also came and filed a claim. She was known to all her friends as Granny. She was also a first cousin to Jefferson Davis. Ray's father William and older brother George had moved on farther north and west, as they were prospectors. The older children had also moved on out to Portland Oregon. Granny went west to live with her daughters Belle Thompson and Jennie Harbin.
When John had built up a good herd of Herefords he needed a good bull. He got word to his brother George, who was now out in Montana. George walked and led the bull all the way from Zortman Montana to Bixby South Dakota.
Ray met and married Margaret Foley. Ray rode with the last roundup in 1902 and went to almost all the reunions of the 1902 cowboys until his death in 1949.
He was also the 1st assessor of the area, which was later divided into Perkins Co., Harding Co., and Butte Co. He covered all his area by horseback. As Being County Assessor Ray always said they wrote the names as they sounded, so some were not spelled correctly!" 2
