General:
Marshal, William, 1st Earl of Pembroke (and Strigul) c. 1146 -- 1219 Knight, and regent of England (1216--19), a nephew of the Earl of Salisbury. He won a military reputation fighting the French, supported Henry II against Richard I, and went on a crusade to the Holy Land. Pardoned by Richard, he was made an earl, appointed a justiciar, and shared the marshalcy of England with his brother, John, until the latter's death gave him full office. He saw further fighting in Normandy (1196--9), supported the new king (John) but spent the years 1207--12 in Ireland, returning to become the king's chief adviser. After John's death in 1216, he was appointed regent for the nine-year-old Henry III, and as such concluded a peace treaty with the French. 12
