Thomas Parsons Enters His Rest

A Well Known and Much Respected Man Answers the Final Summons

Death called for Thomas S. Parsons after a long illness on Thursday morning. For five months Mr. Parsons had been confined to his room and had been denied the activities of robust men, but through it all he had been a patient sufferer and true to the belief of the faith he possessed.

Mr. Parsons was a native of Kentucky, where he was born March 9, 1837. He came west in 1870 and located on a big ranch in Mendocino county, where he resided until about a year ago, when he moved to Santa Rosa. He devoted his life to agricultural pursuits and was well known and much respected among his fellowmen. He was a gentleman of the old school whose word was as good as his bond.

The deceased is survived by the following children: Robert Parsons of San Francisco; City Engineer J. C. Parsons of Santa Rosa; George W. Parsons of Marysville and Mrs. H.H. McKoon of Mendocino county. He also left two daughters by a second marriage.

The funeral will take place Saturday morning. High mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at St. Rose's church at 8:30 by the Rev. Father J. M. Cassin. On the morning train the remains will be taken to Hopland and will be interred in the family plot in the cemetery there. This is the fourth bereavement in the Parsons family in a little over a year.

The remains are at the funeral apartments of Lafferty & Smith. 56

W. E. Parsons Killed by an Auto on Fourth Street

Aged Man Run Down by Robert Hodge Saturday

William Edward Parsons, the aged uncle of City Engineer J. C. Parsons, was run over by an automobile driven by Robert Hodge at the corner of Fourth and A Streets shortly after 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon and died from the effects of the injuries he sustained a short time afterwards in the Mary Jesse Hospital, where he was hurried immediately after the accident. His right side was crushed in by the wheel of the heavy machine.

From the statements of bystanders it was learned that the old gentleman apparently either did not see the approach of the machine, said to have been driven at a low rate of speed, or else got confused and stepped in front of the machine. Mr. Hodge picked up the injured man and hurried him to the hospital where Dr. J. W. Jesse gave him immediate attention but it was seen that human agency, owing to the nature of the injuries could not avail. Father M. A. J. Kasper was called and administered the rites of the church.

At the time of the accident there were many people on the street and a crowd soon collected. There were many willing hands to asisst the injured man into the automobile which took him to the hospital and his nephew, City Engineer Parsons, was called. He and other relatives were at the bedside when he died.

Statement by Mr. Hodge

Mr. Hodge, when seen at his home, 1191 McDonald avenue, Saturday evening, was not aware of the death of Mr. Parsons but was quite nervous over the accident. He said he had been in business in San Francisco for many years and employed a large number of (?) all the time, including some fast horses, but had never been involved in an accident of any kind.

"With my wife and Mr. Hamilton, a neighbor," said Mr. Hodge, "we had been out for a little ride during the afternoon and were coming up Fourth street. I saw a man start to cross the street, at A, and slowed up so as to pass behind him. Then just as I was going to pass him another man from the opposite direction crossed in front of me, looking up Fourth street.

"I released the gear and threw on the brake at the same time tooting my born as a warning. My machine scraped a buggy passing on one side while the man in front appeared to grab the fender on that side and with a cry sank to the ground. In throwing the front wheels about to clear the buggy I thought that they had straddled the body of the man. I did not think the wheels passed over him as there was no lifting of the machine as if the wheels had passed over any obstruction. It was an unavo8idable accident as far as I was concerned."

Parsons was Pioneer

The late William Edward Parsons was eighty-five years old. He came west in 1850 and was engaged in mining with success until 1858, when he went to Mendocino county and purchased an immense stock ranch which he ran until about three years ago, when he sold out. After traveling about for a year or so he came to Santa Rosa and with his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Buckman, eighty-two years of age, he had been residing on Dutton avenue. A grandson, Clair Buckman, also lived with him. The deceased was a bachelor. The sister of the deceased, Mrs. Buckman, returned to Santa Rosa Saturday afternoon, accompanied by Mrs. Boyd of that city, with whom she had been visiting. For some time after her brother had been injured she could not be found to receive the sad news. The death was undoubtedly purely an accident and so far as could be ascertained Mr. Hodge was not to blame.

Inquest This Afternoon

Coroner Frank L. Blackburn was notified at Petaluma and sent word that he would be here to hold an inquest this afternoon at 4 o'clock. The remains are at the undertaking apartments of Lafferty & Smith on B Street. 73
