Mrs. Bethena A. Cooney, 81, died August 14, 1992 at the Fort Bragg hospital. Born in Norman, Oklahoma, the family moved to Ukiah when she was a small child. She earned her teaching degree in 1933 in San Francisco. Her teaching career began at the old Ocean school north of Cleone, continuing in Fort Bragg until 1976. Her late husband, Floyd Cooney, died November 16, 1977. Surviving were several nieces and nephews. Services were led by Rev. Terry E. Cole on the 17th.

Bethena A. Cooney
Bethena A. Cooney, age 81, a Fort Bragg resident, passed away on tFriday, Aug. 14, 1992 at Mendocino Coast Hospital, following a long illness.
She was a native of Norman, Oklahoma. Early in her childhood, her family moved to Ukiah, where she was raised and educated, being a graduate of Ukiah High School. She then attended Marin Junior College, and was a graduate of the San Francisco Normal School with a teaching degree in 1933.
She began her teaching career at the old Ocean School, which was located at Cleone, just north of Fort Bragg. She then taught for many years within the Fort Bragg Unified School District, teaching at Fort Bragg Middle and Redwood Elementary, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of the Fort Bragg First Presbyterian Church, Mendocino Art Center, California Retired Teachers Association, Gloriana Opera, Friends of the Library, Mendocino Performing Arts, League of Women Voters, Mendocino Historical Society, and wa a Co-Founder of the Community Concert Association.
With her late husband, Floyd, she was a generous supporter of the cultural activities of the North Mendocino Coast. Both of them were active supporters of Community Concerts during its 37 years in Fort Bragg, and she continued to encourage local cultural efforts, including music, dance and drama as well as the visual arts.
But there is more reason to remember Beth than her willingness to support cultural affairs. She was a lieable lady - friendly, good-humored, warm-hearted. There can't be too many of this kind of woman. She thanked us for helping her; we thank her for gracing our community.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Floyd Cooney, in 1977. She is survived by her niece, Frances Fletcher of Africa; great-nephew Steve Fletcher of Africa; great-niece Susan Fletcher Miller of Penngrove, CA; nephew Bob Green of Winters, CA; nephew Virgil Green of Hayward, CA; great-niece Linda Green Gibbs of Auburn, CA; nephew Jame Haslem of New Mexico; nephew Bill Conkey of Yuba City, CA; great-niece Janey Conkey of Walnut Creek, CA; sisters-in-law Lois Cooney and Mary Cooney of Fort Bragg; niece Joanne Cooney Frazer of Fort Bragg; niece Kathy Cooney Grisdale of England; and nephew Tom Cooney of Washington; and by numerous beloved friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 17, 1992 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Bragg, with Reverend Terry Cole officiating. Private inurnment followed, as arranged by Chapel By The Sea in Fort Bragg.
