Boiler Explodes!
Two Men Killed in Anderson Valley

An Awful Catastrophe Caused by a Defective Gauge Pipe - Worthy Men Meet a Horrible Death

One of the most lamentable accidents that has happened in Mendocino county for years occurred near Philo Friday afternoon of last week when a threshing machine boiler exploded and instantly killed Wm. Rose, a pioneer resident, and fatally injured David Lear, a young farmer.

The threshing machine was the property of J. B. Saunders, but had been leased by Mr. Rose, and the outfit was at work on J. H. Smalley's ranch. Perry Irish was employed as engineer, and just before the explosion took place the belt ran off the drive wheel. It is said that the steam was being shut off when the boiler bursted. Rose was stooping over the tool box at the rear end of the boiler, and the flying pieces of iron almost decapitated him. The boiler and engine were lifted bodily and hurled a distance of 210 feet from their original position. Lear was at work about the separator and some of the flying pieces struck him. Some of the other work men and spectators were also injured, but no others seriously. Richard Day and T. H. Rawles were seated on a bench looking at the work and they were hurled several feet through the air and received some bruises.

After the explosion it was only by almost superhuman effort that the injured men were saved from cremation, as the fire under the boiler, scattering in all directions, started a fierce fire in the dry stacks of grain. The separator, grain, etc., were destroyed, and the flames spread to the barn and its contents, which were also consumed.

The progress of the fire was barely stopped before it reached Mr. Smalley's residence. Mr. Smalley's loss is estimated at fully $5000.

The cause of the explosion is said to have been a defective steam -gauge pipe, which, being filled with rust, prevented the gauge from registering the correct pressure. It is said that the gauge only showed thirty pounds of steam at the time of the explosion. The fracture in the boiler showed in the fire box.

Wm. Rose was one of the pioneer stage drivers of the county, and he was highly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances. He had been driving on the Ukiah -Mendocino line at intervals during the last four years. He leaves a wife and four children.

D. L. Lear was a young, unmarried resident of Anderson valley, who was to have been married in a few weeks. He was also greatly respected throughout the valley. The occurance has cast a gloom over that portion of the county.

A Boiler Explosion
A Fatal Accident in Anderson Valley
Two Men Lose Their Lives - Others Seriously Injured - Grain Barns and Separator Burned Up.

A terrible accident occurred at the Smalley ranch near Philo, Friday last, which resulted in the instant death of William Rose and the fatal wounding of David L. Lear, Vernon Rawles was scalded and Richard Day badly hurt by a piece of flying meta.. Wm. Nunn was also injured.

The cause of this terrible accident was the explosion of a boiler used for threshing grain. It belonged to Sanders. The force of the explosion was terrific - the entire boiler and engine, with the exception of the fire box and wheels, was thrown clear over the separator some distance away.

The deceased were running a threshing outfit for J. B. Sanders. Perry Irish was the engineer of the machine, and is said to be a competent mechanic. The stories told about the accident vary much in detail, but it is evident from a comparison of the alleged facts of the sad affair, that the boiler was not in the best of condition, and that the cause of the explosion was the result of low water in the boiler.

Wm. Rose, who was killed outright, was standing on the platform of the separator, about sixty feet away from the engine, and a piece of the boiler struck him on the head killing him instantly. The others who were injured, were in the immediate vicinity of the boiler, and strange to say, that several who were close at hand were not hurt at all. The fire under the boiler was scattered by the explosion and set fire to the standing grain and stubble fields, and some 2000 bushels of grain was destroyed with two large barns. The later were partially covered by insurance.

Mrs. Smalley experienced a very narrow escape for her life. During the progress of the fire she went to the barn to try to save some stock, and an exploding pistol that had been left in the barn, narrowly missed her head.

It was with great effort that the people of the vicinity succeeded in getting the flames under control. At last reports Mr. Lear was still alive but in a very serious condition.

Since the above was in type we have learned that Mr. Lear has died from his injuries.

William Rose was well known in this vicinity, having had driven stage here for Johnson and on the Overland route. 27 47
