General:
Born in Madison county, New York, February 22, 1826. Here he resided with his parents on a farm until April, 1844, when he went to Wisconsin, where he followed farming until 1850, when he immigrated to California, crossing the plains with horse teams. He arrived in Hangtown (Placerville) in August after a four months trip. After spending two years in the mines, Mr. Ball came to Mendocino county and settled in Anderson Valley in August, 1852. He owns eight hundred acres of land about a mile north from Boonville, where he follows farming and wool- growing. For the past two years he has kept a state station on the line running from Cloverdale to Mendocino City. Mr. Ball married, January 1, 1855, a young widow, a native of Vermont, with two children. They have eight children, four sons and four daughters.

Deaths Icy Finger
Two Pioneers Cross The Silent River

Another of California's pioneers has passed to that place whence no traveler returns.

Jefferson David [sic] Ball, a highly esteemed citizen of Anderson valley, departed this life Sunday, May 6th, and has gone to his eternal reward.

He had not been ill many days and his condition was ot considered serious or critical. When he felt that his end was approaching, he had his children and relatives called to his bedside, and passed peacefully away at the age of 73 years.

His remains were laid to rest beside those of his dearly beloved wife, and son, Chardon S., in the local cemetery of Greenmound, adjourning his premises and within easy view of his home, the site of which he had generously donated years ago to the community for a burial ground. His last resting place was one of his own selection, jade some time ago, and marked by a large, beautiful bronze family monument erected when visited by his severest stroke of affliction and saddest bereavement, the death of his wife.

Mr. Ball was a native of the State of New York. The high esteem in which he was held was manifested by the large concourse which attended his funeral.

He was possessed of all those qualities inherent in a good man and valuable citizen. In his home circle he was a model husband and father, and , if equaled could not be surpassed in that respect. In the community he was noted to his uprightness and integrity of character, always reliable, and foremost as a factor in any project that tended to further the interest or welfare of Anderson valley or its people. His decease is universally regretted. 67 97 98 99 100

Death of Mrs. Henry Wightman

Mrs. Henry Wightman, of Anderson valley, passed to her eternal reward June 22, aged forty -three years, six months and twenty- seven days, after a lingering illness of more than a year.

Her family and friends had supposed that the salubrious climate of Lake county might prove beneficial to her and so had removed her to Middletown in June of last year, where she remained until thirteen days ago, when no hopes were entertained of her recovery. She breathed her last at her old home adjoining the homestead where she, with all her brothers and sisters, was born, surrounded by her family, relatives and friends.

About two months ago her father, the late Jefferson Davis Ball, and other relatives visited her in Lake county and she was then able to partake of and enjoy short daily drives. She never recovered from the shock caused by the death of her son, Herbert B. Wightman, which occurred on June 3, 1899, but since her father's death gradually grew worse to the end.

Mrs. Wightman was a model wife and mother and through life was universally loved by all who knew her. Mr. Wightman, children and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. The interment took place in the family lot in Greenmound cemetery, W. A. Armstrong and W. E. Miller officiating.
