General:
Thomas P. Van Sciever, 97, of Sterling Heights, formerly of Dearborn, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Clinton Township. He was born Dec. 27, 1910, in Cleveland, Ohio.
He married his wife, Dorinne, on March 29, 1935, in Oakland, Calif. He was a longtime Mason and in the Detroit Meteorologist Society. He originated the airline dispatch society. Mr. Van Sciever put the first bag of air mail on the first overseas flight of the China Clipper. He was the highest ranking civilian who participated in the Berlin air lift.
He is survived by his children, Craig (Ginny) Van Sciever of St. Louis, and Kendra Harding of Clinton Township; four grandchildren; and four great-grandsons. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorinne Van Sciever, on Aug. 31, 2007.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kensington Community Church, 1825 East Square Lake Road, Troy, with the Rev. Ryan Morrill officiating.
Arrangements were directed by Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, Utica.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Thomas P. Van Sciever to the Aeronautics and Astronautics Scholarship Fund-Purdue Foundation, 403 N. Wood St., Lafayette, IN 49707-2007.
