Notes
General:
George VI 1895 -- 1952 King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Born Albert Frederick Arthur George York, on December 14, 1895, in Sandringham, England. He was the second son of George V (formerly the Duke of York) and Queen Mary of England (formerly Mary of Teck). As a child, Albert differed greatly from his assertive brother Edward, due to a speech impediment that led to his withdrawn personality. He attended naval training school at Osborne and Dartmouth and served in the Navy and Air Service during World War I. Toward the end of the war, Albert was commissioned to become president of the newly formed Industrial Welfare Society. In 1920, he was named the 13th Duke of York, although he was often referred to as the "Industrial Prince," because of his close relationship with factory workers. In 1923, Albert married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, with whom he had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
In December 1936, Albert rather reluctantly succeeded to the throne after the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. Upon his coronation on May 12, 1937, Albert assumed the title King George VI, inheriting a dissuasive country, which was overwhelmed with uncertainty about its future. The controversy surrounding Edward's resignation and George's appointment was soon stifled by the developments of World War II. After several years of neutrality, Great Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939. During the conflict, George VI frequented England's war-torn cities, munitions factories, and supply docks. His efforts reestablished confidence in the monarchy and also bolstered his individual popularity.
The post-war period from 1945-50 proved to be one of vast change for England. The most notable transformations occurred in industry, transportation and health care, which were brought under public ownership. George emerged from his popularity faced with political and economic adversity. In 1947, he toured South Africa and substituted his title from Head of the Commonwealth to that of Emperor of India, when the sub-continent was granted independence by the Labor government. Shortly afterwards, George's health began to decline yet he carried on with his duties.
George VI died on February 6, 1952 with his last great public occasion being the opening of the Festival of Britain in 1951. In his short reign he saved the monarchy from near ruin and passed to his daughter, Britain's current Queen Elizabeth, a more stable crown.
