1-3 THOMAS McCLUNG
G0002
The first son of 1-2 John and Jennett Thompson, was born abt 1745. He was said to
have been killed at the battle of Point Pleasant but this is found to
be in error. He md Nancy Black (b. abt 1748 in Rockbridge,VA). They lived in Greenbrier Co., WV. They
had six children.
Keith McClung writes:
Research on Thomas Mcclung [1-3 G0002]: McClung genealogy states that he died at
the Battle Of Point Pleasant [1774]. Here are some statements that may prove otherwise:
1. 1775-Augusta Co. Claims Records [ For Battle Of Point Pleasant] Thomas McClung for the value of
one Heifer.
2. Could not find in list of killed at Point Pleasant [this does not prove anything since the list is
probably incomplete]
3. 1782 Greenbrier Co. Tax List- thomas had 9 horses and 23 cattle.
4. 1785-1786 Land owners Greenbrier Co.-Thomas for Lewis heirs-400 acres.
5. 1783-1786 Heads of Families for Greenbrier Co.-- Thomas McClung.
6. 6 January, 1783 Greenbrier Land Book--the last entry to include the place where Thomas McClung
now lives, being a survey made for Charles Lewis in the year 1774.
This seems to indicate that he was not killed in above battle. His name could not be found in any
surviving muster role--but those are incomplete.
Another Thomas could not be found listed in Greenbrier during this time period.
H. Juhling McClung concurs and ads: Thomas is found in the 1782 tax records. He was not listed on
any record I can find relating to being injured or killed at Point Pleasant. He is listed as being in
the Williamsburg District of Greenbrier County. After he disappeared from the tax roles, Agnes McClung
appears as the holder of that property. Agnes commonly has the nickname of Nancy. Therefore, I think
this is the "long missing but not killed in Point Pleasant" Thomas McClung, son of John.
