3-3 WILLIAM McCLUNG

    The third (probably the first) child of John and Janet Thompson McClung was born about 1738. He married abt 1766 to Abigail Dickinson (spelled Dickson in Rev. Wm McClung's work)

     In 1771: Matthew's Trading Post on the Greenbrier River records the following: rum, salt and gun powder sold to William McClung. 1774, rum sold to William McClung. 1776, interest on account.

     In 1773 he emigrated with his wife and three children from Rockbridge Co., VA to the mouth of Big Clear Creek, near Rupert, WV. On account of the Indians, he soon moved to near Williamsburg, WV, where he resided three years to be near Ft. Donnally. He then returned to Big Clear Creek about 1776. He was the first settler on Meadow River (the area became known as McClung's Meadows and the river later became Meadow River). He took a tomahawk entry for a few thousand acres of land on that river and its tributaries. When he first raised his cabin, there was not a store or mill in many miles of his lonely habitation. The Indians were so troublesome that he plowed with his rifle tied to his shoulder, while his wife with her musket and three little children, took refuge in the dense swamp during the day, returning to the cabin only at night when he was there to defend them.

     In partnership with Gen. Andrew Moore (his brother-in-law) and Alexander Welch, he patented a tract of land containing 43,000 acres lying between the Meadow river and the Gauley, in what is now Nicholas Co., WV. In 1782 William entered 230 acres on Slab Camp Creek including 100 acres of a military warrant, part of a survey made for William in 1776.

     His descendants are very numerous in Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties. During his lifetime he frequently remarked that he could stand on his doorstep, blow his bugle and call two hundred of his descendants to breakfast. In his old age, he used to give hundred-acre tracts of land to his grandchildren for birthday presents.

      He was very tall and handsome in appearance, a good conversationalist and a most esteemable citizen. He was a Presbyterian and donated two acres of land on Otter Creek, one mile west of Meadow Bluff, for the erection of a church. The church later came into the possession of the Baptists: The Amwell Baptist Church near Rupert being the outgrowth.

      William was an elder in the Old Stone Church in Lewisburg, which he would travel 20 miles to attend. He also served in the Revolutionary War. The monument on his grave states: Virginia; ensign, Virginia Militia, Revolutionary War. In 1777 the Claims Record of Virginia, William turned in the following claim: "bacon sold to Capt. Arbuckle."

      He died 18 Jan 1833 and is buried in the Otter Creek cemetery, one mile west of Meadow Bluff, WV. A monument was placed there in 1968. (DAR Patriot Index). Harry McClung contributed a photo of the headstone.

      Abigail Dickinson was born near Staunton, VA. Her mother was Abigail Carpenter, the daughter of Adam Dickinson. Augusta Co. Records by Chalkley, Vol. 2, p. 94: William McClung and Abigail, his wife, versus Dickinson. 11 Mar 1803: Adam Dickinson, grandfather of Abigail, intestate, leaving his son, John. Abigail was very young and residing with her grandmother, Catherine, mother of John. John died without having complied with his agreement to pay Abigail. Then Catherine died testate. John died testate, leaving Martha, his wife; Adam and John Dickinson; Joseph Kinkead and wife, Nancy, John Shrewsberry and Martha, his wife; Charles Lewis and Jane, his wife (who is widowed, children, heirs, and devisees of John Dickinson), Abigail was the daughter and sole heir of Abigail Carpenter, deceased, who was the daughter of Adam Dickinson. Catherine Dickinson's original will dated 17th February 1790 (no certificate of probate). Son, John; daughter, Mary, and granddaughter, Nancy. A statement in the paper says that Adam Dickinson, intestate, leaving one son, John; a daughter, Mary; and granddaughter, Nancy.       Abigail died 7 Nov 1820 and is also buried at Otter Creek Cemetery, Greenbrier, WV. They had eleven children.

      Researcher, Keith McClung, states that William's first cabin was located at a Pine Ridge, which is located off of the Tommy Hall Road, about one mile from Rupert. the cabin was marked by a large pine tree. The second cabin was located on the Denvin C. McClung farm, near a spring. The third two-story log house was located on top of a hill about two hundred yards away from the second cabin. These sites were pointed out to me by my grandfather, Denvin C. McClung.

    The first child of William and Abigain Dickinson McClung was b. 10 Jan 1768. He married 1) Jane Bollar 14 Mar 1793 of Bath Co. VA. (LDS film #30620, p.2) She was b. 19 May 1773 to John and Margaret Thornton Bollar in Jackson River; died 9 Sep 1828 (JG=1820). They settled in a log house one mile east of present day Rupert, WV which remains standing today. They had 10 children. He md 2)Hannah M. McMillion 19 Sep 1829 (Gr M,42). Hannah was b. 14 Feb 1795 to John and Rachel (Hutcheson) McMillion. Both of these women were sisters to William (Long Billy) McClung's two wives. John and Hannah had five children. Hannah died 1 Dec 1861 (Gr D, 1853-97)

      John was a blacksmith by trade and received his nickname "Black John". He lived one mile east of Rupert, WV. He served as a postmaster for several years. He was fond of hunting. He was a man of medium height and weighed about 180 pounds. He was strong and athletic.

      He had 10 children in the first marriage and five in the second. He died 20 July 1850. (AFN:4Z8V-B5)

    The sixth child of William and Mary Callison McClung was b. 1 Sep 1823. She md 2 Jan 1845 to Jacob Odell of Snow Hill, WV (Gr Mg, p.55). He was b. 1 Jun 1820; d. 25 Dec 1883. Jacob went by the name of "Lame Jake". He was Post Master at Snow Hill, WV. They settled in VA and then;moved to the Wilderness Dist. He became a contractor and worked for the City of Perryton. They moved to Dalhart, TX in 1942 and ranched. Robert died 3 Feb 1963 near Lamar, CO. They had one son, Earl.

He was accidentally electrocuted and died 12 Sept 1942. They had two children: Judith Weber and Jeanne Snider who have sent in this picture of their father and his obituary.

Lillie Dure McClung lived on Big Mountain until the death of Orange McClung. 6 Feb 1945. Her Daughter , Trudy, moved her to Webster Springs to her home and took great care of her until her death 8 June 1975. They had three children, a) Stacy married Jim Hobbs, b) Viola married Omer Henson and moved to Fayetteville. They had one daughter, Gaye. c) Keith married Beatrice Sheets and lived at Crawley before moving to Balt Md. They had two children, Sam and Carolyn. Rosa (Rose) died in Nov 1970.     The third child of Clark Brown and Charlotte Zopp McClung was b. 3 Jan 1885 (tombstone says 1 Jan). Mattie Delora. (from John Pomeroy) Mom had a hankerchief, a pin knife, and some coins left of her father. There was also some silver dollars from 1880's that we used on the bottom of the 30 GALLON copper kettle for making apple butter in Quinwood, WVA.. The kettle came from ECK's family and when you stirred, the bottom would have a dent each time the stirrer moved on the bottom. There were also a cigar box of IOU's left from the store that Charley Smith had on Big Mountain.

From Trudie's Story, Looking Back: Mattie married Charles Eston Smith abt 1910. Charley was born 28 Mar 1885 on Mill Creek, the son of William JOSEPH and Martha Lucinda Crane Smith. Mattie and Charley owned and operated a store below the Mount Zion Church on Big Mtn. All eight of their children were born above the store. a) Velma was born abt 1911 and died abt 1913. She was buried at Big Mtn. McMillion Cemetary. b) Virginia was born 11 Jun 1913 and married (1) Claude Thomas Brewer and had two children, Billy and Betty (2) Howard Lee Twilley. c) Charles Clifford was born 13 Apr 1915, married Marie Robinson, and had four girls, Janet, Mary, Dolore and Patsy. d) Dennis EDward was born 15 Mar 1918 and married (1) Glema Lester and had one son, Jerry, (2) Lottie Shiflett and had Chucky and Kathy. e) Suzanna (Sue) was born 29 Jan 1920 and married John E. (PETE) Pomeroy and had John Eston born 2 Jun 1940- died 3 Jun 1940.(Drunk doctor in Rupert broke his neck), Carrie Gail, John E. Jr. (Bud), Brenda, Jenny and Sammy Jack. f) Clara was born 12 Mar 1922 and married Cline Watson and had Jerlene, Paul, (Paul's twin sister died at birth), Michael, Ricky, and Annette. g) Tollie Harold was born 5 May 1924 and married Aneta Adkinson and had Sheryl, Tollie Jr., Karen and Debbie. h) Wallace Eston was born 31 July 1927 and was married twice with no chidren. Mattie died of complications on 11 Sept 1927 and was buried beside Velma at McMillion Cemetary. Charley died in Baltimore on 24 Feb 1950 and was buried behind Clark Brown and Charlotte Jane Zopp McClung's grave at McMillion Cemetary.

    The fourth child of Clark Brown and Charlotte Zopp McClung was b. born 1 Jan 1889 on Big Mtn. in Greenbrier Co. She md 9 May 1917 to Henry Amick. (JG) She lived at Carl, WV on Big Mountain until her death. She had one son, Charles. She worked at Hinton's McKinley Hospital with her mother, Charlotte, before getting married. (JG) From John Pomeroy: Bessie Maude McClung married Ottie C. (DISH) O'Dell and lived on O'Dell hill at Quinwood, WVA. She and Great Aunt Lillie looked identical and had the same voice. Her adopted daughter Buck, was one of my angels when I was two and lived by Mrs. Sleds, She had no other children.

    The sixth child of Clark Brown and Charlotte Zopp McClung was b. 14 Oct 1896. She md 9 May 1917 to Marvin H. O'Dell. From John Pomeroy: Vernie Oma McClung married Marvin H. (ALBERT) O'Dell. They lived in Quinwood, WVA.. After Albert hurt his leg, he and Great Aunt Vernie had a grain feed store, where now exists a restaurant and post office. Vernie would carry in two one hundred bags of grain, one under each arm and off-loaded the trucks, and also load the trucks for buyers. Albert meanwhile took care of the cash register and then returned to his friendly game of cards with locals in the back room. Vernie was a mountain woman that Clark Brown had to replace for sons that he did not have. She was the best LADY I had ever met in WVA.. She listened, spoke gently, always had a garden and had the McClung smile that warmed your heart.

    The eighth child of Alexander and Latuna Smith McClung was b. 18 Oct 1899 on Big Mountain above Rupert.

     Oather's mother died when he was thirteen. At fifteen he started working in small coal mines in the Quinwood area and larger mines as he got older.

     He married Nina Irene Bennett 25 April 1923 in Shallmar, MD where Oather was working at the time. She was b. 18 April 1903 to John and Margaret Shafer Bennett. She was a school teacher.

     The family moved several times as Oather found work in mines around West Virginia. He worked for 44 years until he was disabled in the Duo mines. Nina had been postmaster and retired.

     They had twelve children: Frances, Florence, Oather Jr., Frankie, Dorothy (died 1935), Donald, Dennis, Naomi, David, Delmas, Larry and Martha. Oather cared for the McClung family burial cemetary on Big Mountain.. About two miles from Anjean road in Rupert on the left side of the road. (John Pomeroy)

     Oather died April 1973. Nine died 11 Jan 1988. They are buried in Fairview Cem. at Nettie, Nicholas Co., WV. Dennis died Sept. 1980 and is buried in Richawood Cem., Richwood, WV.

    The twelfth child of "Black" John and Hannah C. McMillion McClung was b. 18 May 1832. He wore one of the first suits of broadcloth seen in his part of the country; hence his sobriquet. He was a prosperous farmer and resided near Rupert, WV. He married 12 Mar 1856 to Nancy Ann McClung (b. 20 Apr 1837 to Alexander McClung-Curly Alex). Note: he was listed as S. H. on his daughter's death certificate. He was a very propserous farmer and stock raiser of Meadow Bluff, WV. He owned 550 acres on Big Clear Creek. He was a Capt of Co. G, 79th VA Militia, Confederate Army. He was a Justice of peace in Meadow River for 16 years. They settled and lived near Rupert. He died 19 Jan 1915. They both are buried at Hilltop Methodist Cem.     The thirteenth child of "Black John" and Hannah McMillion McClung was b. 28 Sep 1834 (JG=1824). He died 29 Dec 1859 and is buried at Hilltop Methodist Cem., Rupert, WV. Unmd.

14-5 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN McCLUNG (Lame Ben)

    The fourteenth child of "Black" John and Hannah McMillion McClung was b. 14 Jan 1836 in Greenbrier Co.,WV. He md 12 Feb 1857 Rebecca Jane McClung (b. 3 Sep 1839 to Col. Allen & Francis Remley McClung) They resided at Rupert, WV at the end of Tommy Hall Road at the foot of Little Sewell Mountain. He had a bad leg so was called, Lame Ben. He was drafted by the Confederate forces but when he could not keep up, he was sent home (family tradition). Eleven children. In 1910 his wife had died and he was listed as a widow, age 74. Adelia was living with him. He died 8 Mar 1917 and is buried on his farm at Rupert, WV (now John Jones Farm) in Greenbrier County. (Keith McClung, researcher)

    The first child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 5 Feb 1858 in Greenbrier Co.WV. She md Joseph Henry Beets 29 March 1877 (Gr Mg, 42). He was the son of John and Mary Susan (Kious) Beets of Fayette Co., WV. John and Florence resided Rupert, WV. She died 1 Oct 1944 and they are buried on the Old Benjamin F. McClung farm near Rupert.

     She and Joseph Beets had 13 children: Ora Elizabeth b. 1878; Roy Everill b. 1870; Mamie R. b. 1881; Eliarene b.1883; Georgia b. 1884; Wesley b. 1886; Viola b. 1889; Elmer b. 1890; Betty b. 1893; Walter b. 1895; Sidney Eleanor b. 1897; Gladys b. 1904; Jesse b. 1893.     The second child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 10 Aug 1859 at Little Sewell, WV (Gr B, 77). He md 8 Oct 1885 to Elizabeth Martin in Greenbrier County. She was b. 24 Apr 1864 to John and Elizabeth Hawes Martin. She died 19 June 1901. They lived at Little Sewell. Four children.

    The second child of Lenius and Elizabeth Martin McClung was b. 12 Aug 1890 in Greenbrier County. Ember married Richard Rose. She died 27 Jan 1940 in Covington, VA.

    The third child of Lenius and Elizabeth Martin McClung was b. 5 Mar 1893 in Greenbrier County. He died 8 Feb 1964 in Maryland.

    The fourth child of Lenius and Elizabeth Martin McClung was b. 20 May 1895. She married Charles William Withrow 23 April 1916. He was born 12 Feb 1872 and died 29 Feb 1952 in VA.

    The third child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 10 Mar 1862 (Gr B, 43)[Keith has 16th of Mar]. He died 22 May 1875. (Gr D, 1853-97)

    The fourth child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 4 Apr 1864. She md Judson M. G. Hepler. Resided near Rupert in Greenbrier County, WV. She died in 1945 and buried at Soule Chapel Cemetery. (Keith McClung)

    The seventh child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 8 Apr 1871 (Gr B to Benjamin F. and Eliza C.). She md Edward W. P. Hepler. Resided Goshen, VA (Keith has that they may have moved back to Rockbridge Co., VA).

    The ninth child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 21 June 1875. She md Edgar R. Heaster 11 Apr 1900. Resided Crawley, WV. She died in 1938 and is buried at Wallace Cem. in Greenbrier County,WV.

10-6 MARY GERTRUDE McCLUNG

    The tenth child of Benjamin Franklin and Rebecca Jane McClung was b. 26 Feb 1878. She was a teacher. She married Lorenzo Price. They lived at Rupert, WV. She died 1 May 1958 and is buried at End of the Trail Cem., Greenbrier Co., WV.

15-5 RACHEL ELIZABETH McCLUNG

    The fifteenth child of Black John and Hannah McMillion McClung was b. 23 June 1838. She md Dr. Cyrus Alexander Rupert 28 Feb 1854. Rachel was not yet 16 but he had said that he loved her when a babe in the cradle and determined to make her his wife. He did not marry until he was 42. He was b.7 Oct 1812. They resided at Rupert, WV and he is credited with founding the town. They started with a log cabin and built a large, two story southern house. (Brief History of Rupert, WV, Fasick) They had 15 ch: Ledona, Leviro, Livege, Lorena, Lualzo, Leancy, Lycena, Lacta, Ladura, Leonides, Layuna, Lydaho, Lomega, Lester, Lenida.
