    The second child of William and Abigail Dickinson McClung was b. 24 Mar 1770 in Rockbridge Co., VA. He married Mary Alderson, dau. of George Alderson and grand-dau of Rev. John Alderson 15 Mar 1803 (Monroe Mg 1799-1869,14). She was b. 13 May 1787; d. 13 May 1870. A monument was erected to her memory at Mt. Lookout, WV by her descendants. As a young woman she rode a horse to Richmond, VA to obtain a patent to a large tract of land between Gauley and Meadow River. She and James offered their children and nephews 400 acres each if they would get married and settle on it. Five of their sons accepted the offer. They were married in Monroe County,WV. (JG)

    James was the father of many of the pioneer McClungs in the Mt. Lookout, WV. area. They had nine children. James died 24 July 1824.

    A story is told of him (They Hacked the Clearings-Mc J,6,10). He and his brother, Sam, had a quarrel so he saddled his horse and went to see Rev. Judson McClung ( who often mediated in the community). He called over to Jud who was cutting oats, "Jud, no one can live in peace with Sam" and told several bad things about him. Uncle Jud said, Now we know the bad things about Sam, let's hear the good." "There is no good," Callison said. Uncle Jud said, "I can name one, he doesn't talk about his neighbors." Callison rode away and was almost home. Suddenly he turned his horse and went back as hard as he could go, called Uncle Jud back to the fence and said, "Jud, when you said Sam didn't talk about his neighbors, did that mean I did?"
