5-3 JOHN McCLUNG (Bath John)
G4601
The fifth child of John who md 1) Janet Thompson and 2) Rebecca Stuart.
We know that Rebecca Stuart could not have been the mother to all the children as their births cover too great a
time span. John did not name any of his children Rebecca and their children did not name the grandchildren
Rebecca. We believe that Janet Thompson was the mother to these children.
John was born abt 1733 and grew up in what became Rockbridge Co., VA.
When he was 18 he came to Thompson Creek in Bath County. The first tract of land granted
to John, Jr. was 165 acres on 3 Aug 1771. A survey of 952 acres was made for him on 16 Sep
1799 (Bath Co. Surveryor's Bk 1, p.282).
John served in the Revolutionary War in General Porterfield's regiment. Gen. Porterfield used to say that when John McClung would pray before a battle, victory was sure to perch upon the American banners. He was an elder in Windy Cove Church for over 70 years, and served on the first Bath County grand jury. He was for a number of years the proprietor of the hotel at Warm Springs. It is reported that he used to visit his brothers in Greenbrier Co. once every year and was greatly beloved by his kindred there.
He married Sarah McCutcheon of Augusta County (later became
Rockbridge) abt 1770. Her parentage is not proven but appears to be Robert McCutcheon and
Margaret Callison. (See McCutcheon Trace for family). Sarah was b. abt 1750 on Little Calf
Pasture River in what became Rockbridge Co. They had nine children.
By 1830 Sarah and John are living with their son William (1830c
Bath). John died abt Sep 1832 (Bath WB 4:129). He was buried on his land near "Big Spring"
about one mile from Woodland church on Route 625. This land is now owned by the family of
the late F.P. Hicklin. By 1840 Sarah was living with her daughter Mary (1840c Bath). Sarah
died abt Jan 1846 (Bath WB 5:140). She was buried in the cemetery at Windy Cove Church,
though there is no stone erected.

date). Their children were Edward b. abt 1802 and md. Eleanor Foos/Foose in Clark Co., OH;
Madison, Thomas, Nancy, Sarah, Isabel. (Researcher: Janet Weeks)

Cove Presbyterian Church and subscribed to the building in 1837. Martha died 4 Mar 1875
and was buried at Bath Glenn. Addison died 2 Dec 1876 and is buried at Windy Cove. By the
1880 census, Luther was living in Millboro and Harvey, Warren, Eugene, Houston and Mary
were living at Williamsville in Bath County. This was probably the homeplace. Havey,
the eldest is listed as 23 and Mary, the youngest as 7 years old.
1-6 LUTHER BROWN McCLUNG
G4606
The first child of Addison and Martha P. Lang McClung was b. 24
Nov 1855 in Bath Co., VA, probably on the old McClung plantation that his great-grandfather
had built back during the times of the Revolutionary War. This was a large plantation house
near Millboro on McClung Ridge and on Thompson's Creek.
The Windy Cove Presbyterian Church was a strong influence on Luther's
life. His father was active and listed as a Deacon. Luther was a Prebyterian minister and
probably did farming as well. He grew up during the civil war and lived through the
transition of the south.
He md Martha Almeda Sophria Armentrout. She was b. 19 May 1860 at
Millboro, Bath, VA, the daughter of Joel and Mary Elizabeth Surber Armentrout. Joel was
noted as one of the few farmers in the valley who did not use slaves.
Five children were born to this marriage. They were living near
her father's home in Millboro, Bath Co., VA. By 1891 Martha was not doing
very well, so Luther decided to go to WV to settle, then come back and get the family. He
was killed in a buggy accident. He was thrown forward and his head hit a metal guard.
They had been married 14 years. He died 30 Nov 1891 and was buried at the Armentrout
Cemetery in Bath Co., VA. Mattie was left to rear her children by herself. It must have
been a very difficult time. One son, Hugh Porter left home and she never heard from
him again. He later wrote to his brother, Everett Dewitt. Mattie lived for her children
and spent time with her grandchildren in Missouri and California before she died 29 May 1921 in Los Angeles, CA. She was buried
at Inglewood, Cem. She never remarried. She was known as a wonderful Christian woman.
Her letters to "Willie" were always encouraging him to live a Christian life. When Luther
was killed, they brought some money to her that he had been carrying. She said that it
was intended as tithing and that was what she did with it. Her testimony has encouraged
many descendants.

when they came to visit. When he passed away, Edith tried to live with different children

"The McClung House at Clover Creek southwest of McDowell was built
in 1844 by William McClung and his wife Rachel . . . It has remained in the family and is
now owned by Mrs. Montgomery McClung Linkous, Mrs. Mary McClung Leake, and Mrs. Frances
McClung Buchanan. Three years after the house was built Highland County was established,
and the McClung house was one of two voting places for Stonewall District. The Clover
Creek Post Office was for years in the front hallway at McClung house. The walls,
eighteen inches thick, are of brick shaped and kilned on the plantation. . .The foundation
is formed from hand-chiseled limestone blocks and foot-thick logs. Flooring is inch-thick
pine tongue-and-groove boards. Heavy paneled doors have the original hardward. The front
section, 2 stories plus attic, is the traditional 2 over 2 design with outside end chimneys.
A wing at the rear has the kitchen with a huge open fireplace.
A stockade once stood in the meadow directly in front of the house.
Here the settlers could flee when Indian attack was likely. The fort was in existence at
the time of Gen. Braddock's defeat in 1755. On that date 2 boys were born in the stockade.
Variously called Clover Creek Fort, Nelson Fort, Fort Meadow, and Fort George, its
outline can still be traced. Beyond the fort meadow was an old grist mill on the
Bullpasture River." (From Old Virginia Houses-Shenandoah, by E.F. Farrar and contributed
