7-3 EDWARD McCLUNG
G5501
The seventh child of John and Janet/Jennett Thompson McClung was probably born
about 1756 in Augusta Co. in an area that later became Rockbridge Co. He md Mrs.
Letitia Weymer, nee Black abt 1784. They moved in 1791 to Peters Creek at
Kessler Cross Lanes in what later became Nicholas Co., WV. Capt. George
Fitzwater also had a cabin there at the same time, when the Morris children were
murdered at Peters Creek in 1792 by the Indians. (A monument is located in the
Nicholas Co. Court House yard in reference to the children and the killing).
Mathias Young made his way during the night to Kesslers Cross Lanes and notified
McClung of the danger. Edward and the family accompanied by Young and
Fitzwater set out for Peters Creek. Each man carried on his back a child and the
wife followed along. All arrived safely at Peters Creek. The Morris children were
buried and very soon all set out for the fort on the Kanawha River at the mouth of
Hughes Creek. Edward McClung I sold his holdings at Kessler Cross Lanes in
Nicholas Co. to the Campbells and Bailes and never returned.
They had four children. Edward drowned in the Kanawha River near Moles Island the latter part of 1793.
According to the records of Joseph Groves, Letitia married to William C. Groves and moved with him to Gallipolia, OH where they reared a large family.
The marriage records of Greenbrier Co. show a Lettice McClung marrying 28 Nov 1797 to William Cherrington (Gr Mg, 5).

county. He built a large cabin near Summersville. It was there that the court was
held from 1819 to 1824. He served as trustee at the time Summersville was
organized. Later a portion of the farm was sold to the town of Summersville where
much is presently being used as a cemetery (Walker Cem.) where he and many
descendants are buried.
John was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a successful farmer and stockman. He gave each of his twelve children good farms. He bought and sold slaves at one time and owned slaves when they were freed. His slave remained with
him until his death. Joe Crow the servant who waited on him was given a farm in
the Canvas area near the Sam Dorsey place. Joe reared his family there after the
war.
In the early part of the day, John could stand in his yard and shoot deer that would feed in the woods near his house. He would pen his sheep in the chimney
corner at night to keep the wolves from devouring them. This remarkable man
cleared and improved nearly 200 acres on the home farm from a vergin forest. His
word was as good as his and and was so taken.
