David McClung was born 1795 in Tennessee. He was the son of John McClung of Madison Co., AL.
He married 4 Dec 1816 in Madison Co., AL to
Margaret R(Russell) Gibson. She was b. ca 1793 in (Greene?) TN to
John and Sarah Russell Gibson. There was also a Mary McClung. She states
that she was born in 1800 (possibly Alabama). She was enumerated in the 1860 census
of Franklin Co.,AL.
David was commissioned a Lieut. in the 7th Regiment, Madison Co. Mississippi Territory in 1816.
Then in 1823/4 and 1826/7 he was a Justice of the Peace in Cotaco, Morgan Co., AL. In 1833
he was still a landowner in Morgan County but by 1842 he can be found in Tishomingo Co., MS.
He was in MS through 1855, and perhaps longer. In 1860 he was back in Frankfort, Franklin
County, AL. David and Margaret had five children: John G., Sarah S/A., William Stuart,
Margaret Emeline (Kittie), and Eliza. He was not in the 1870 census of Franklin Co. although
his son, John, was. We do not have the death date for him at this time although it was probably
close to 1870.

The first child of David and Margaret Russell Gibson McClung was b. ca 1817 or 18. She md
Thomas Norman.
The second child of David and Margaret Russell Gipson McClung was born 25 Nov 1819 in AL. He married
1) 26 Jan 1841 in Lawrence Co. AL to Elizabeth M. Hamilton b. 23 Mar 1820 in TN. She died 3
May 1851 and was the mother of his first six children. John md 2) 10 Nov 1852 in Tishomingo
Co., MS to Darthula Hale b. 1833 in TN to Joseph and Elizabeth E. Hale. She had four children:
David Reed, Nathaniel, Wesley H. and Finiss H. (twins). Darthula died 8 May 1864 in Itawamba
Co., MS. John G. md 3) Elizabeth Malissa Bishop b. ca 1828 SC to Thomas & Mary Bishop. There
were no children by this marriage. They were residing in Franklin Co., AL where they were
enumerated at Pleasant Sight with three of the children in 1850. They were farming and had
$2,500 of real estate. In 1880, J. G. is enumerated in Franklin Co. with wife Elizabeth and
son, Finis H. b. 1862 in AL. However, John states that both parents were born in SC. J.E.
and Emma are living close by.
John was a farmer and an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for about 50 years. He
was well known all over the McGrady Presbytery. About 1884 he moved to Lee Co., MS where he
became an elder in the New Bethany Church. He died 26 Jan 1894 in Lee Co., MS. and was buried
at New Chapel Cemetery, Itawamba Co., MS.
The first child of John G. and Elizabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 15 Sept. 1841 and died 29 Oct 1841.
The second child of John G. and Elizabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 7 Oct. 1842 in Morgan Co., AL. He
md Annie Lou Blackburne. They lived for a time in Franklin County. In 1880 they were residing in Colbert
Co. AL near William Stuart McClung. They moved to Mississippi for a few years and then removed to Navarro
County in West Texas where Annie died. They had six children.
Joseph H. and wife AnnieThis is Joseph Hamilton McClung as a younger man with
his wife, Annie Loucretia Blackburn {14 Feb. 1844-4 July 1909}.
Joseph Hamilton McClung. He was the grandson of Margaret R. Gibson {ca. 1793-?} who was the one & only wife of David McClung {ca. 1795-29 Apr. 1870}. Donated by Suzy Burt

The first child of Joseph H. and Annie Lou Blackburne McClung was born in Colbert Co., AL 5 Oct. 1865.
She married George Samuel W. Burt 8 Nov 1885 in Nettleton, MS. They were the parents of ten children.
They resided at Itaska, TX. This is the lineage of Suzy Burt.
The second child of Joseph H. and Lou Blackburne McClung was b. ca 1866 in AL. He resided
at West, Texas. He married Annie Greenhill about 1901 in Texas. She was the daughter of Theophilous Claborn Greenhill
and Lucy Frances Hudson, was born at Pleasant Site, AL 16 June 1877.
John died 20 Oct. 1942 in Jones Co., TX and was buried in the Hamlin, TX cemetery.
Sometime after the death of John, Annie moved to Ballinger, TX. She died in 1956 and was buried in
the Hamlin Cemetery. John and Annie were the parents of two children:
The first child of John P. and Annie Greenhill McClung was born in Texas about 1902. She married
Ollie _?_. They had one daughter, Peggy Ann.

The second child of John Pinkney and Annie Greenhill McClung was born 9 Feb. 1906 in Texas. He married
Elizabeth (born 13 Sept. 1909-AL; died in Aug. 1980-Jackson, Hinds Co., MS). Eugene resided in Jackson,
MS and had his mother living with him at one time. He died 10 Oct. 1996 in Greensboro, Green Co., GA.
The third child of Joseph H. and Lou Blackburne McClung was b. 23 May 1868 at Colbert Co., AL.
She md Louis H. Monts 9 Aug 1888. He was the son of James Isaac Monts and Lucy Ann Francis, and was born
in Mississippi 2 Aug. 1865. Virginia and Louis resided at West, Texas where they had four children: Annie L., b.
1889; Merle O. b. 1892; a baby who died ca 1900; and Edith Florence b. 1902. Jennie died 3 Oct. 1941
in San Antonio, TX and was buried in Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis, TX on the 5th.
The fourth child of Joseph H. and Annie Lou Blackburn McClung, was born in Franklin Co., AL 11 Oct. 1870.
She married Travis Clayborn Greenhill 24 Dec 1896 in Hillsboro, TX. They became the parents of four sons:
Roy Orlando, Odell Marvin, Homer Eugie and Ben E., Marvin. Chester died 19 Oct. 1943 in Amarillo, TX,
where she was buried the next day in Llano Cemetery.
The fifth child of Joseph Hamilton and Annie Lou Blackburn McClung was born and died in Alabama
28 July 1872.
The sixth child of Joseph Hamilton and Annie Lou Blackburn McClung was born in October of 1879 in Alabama. He was a waiter in a hotel when his family lived in Waco, TX in 1900. Sometime after
1910, Charlie B. married Vera E. Brown, born ca 1896 in Texas to Mary A. and Jim T. Brown, his
neighbors in Lubbock Co., TX. [She may be the Vera McClung born 1 May 1896, and died in March 1982; her
last residence was in Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM.] In 1920, the McClungs were still in Lubbock
County, farming their own land on the Canyon Road. Their last known place of residence was Houston, TX
in the 1940's. The children of Charlie and Vera are:
The first child of Charles Blackburn and Vera E. Brown McClung was born in Texas ca 1913 (he may or may
not be the J.T. McClung who died in Galveston Co., TX 17 July 1973).
The third child of Charles Blackburn and Vera E. Brown McClung was born after 1920.
The seventh child of Joseph H. and Annie Lou Blackburne McClung was born Dec 1883 or 4 in AL. He died
8 May 1902 while staying with his sister, Chester, in West, TX. Burial was in West Cemetery. Clyde had a
relapse of the measles which proved fatal. A member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Clyde was
said to have been a most exemplary young man. He did not marry. (Suzy Burt, researcher)
The third child of John G. and Elizabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 1 Feb. 1845, died 17 Apr. 1845.
The fourth child of John G. and Elizabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 6 Jan. 1846, died later that year
on the 25th of April.

The fifth child of John G. and Elziabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 24 Feb. 1847. During the War
between the States, he served as a Private in Company C, 45th Alabama Infantry Regiment. James lived
nine days after being wounded in Georgia; he died 6 Aug. 1864.
The sixth child of John G. and Elizabeth M. Hamilton McClung was born 7 Oct 1849 in AL. He
md Emma Eliza Bishop about 1870. She was b. 15 Mar 1856 in MS to John B. Bishop. John E. and Emma were
enumerated in the 1880 census of Franklin Co., AL (Pleasant Site) with four children. In the 1920 census,
John E. and Emma were both enumerated
with their son, William Joseph, in Stringtown. They were still there in 1925 and then in McAlester, OK
in 1930. They were living with William at 11 W. Walker Ave. See photos above.
John died 20 Nov. 1934 with burial by Humphrey's Funeral Home was in North McAlester Cemetery. His
marker is of sandstone and, for all intents and purposes, unreadable. John collapsed at home and died of
poisoning. Emma, who was living in Savanna, OK at the time, died 8 Feb. 1938. She was also buried, by
Mills Funeral Home, in North McAlester Cemetery, but has no marker.
The first child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was b. 7 Aug. 1873 in Franklin Co. AL. He was reared
at Pleasant Site, Franklin Co., AL. He md Lillie M. ca 1897. She was born Nov 1878 in TX.
They were enumerated in 1900 in Duke Township, Greer Co., OK Territory, where James was farming land he
owned. In 1904 they could be found in Quannah, TX. In January of 1911 James purchased a lot in
Stringtown, Atoka Co., OK; said lot was sold in August 1915. He also bought land in the county in
December 1913, and again in December 1916.
The second child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was born Sep 1875 in AL.
He was living with his parents at Pleasant Site, AL in 1880. Around 1896. William married
Mary E. Bailey (date?) She was born in Mississippi 28 Feb. 1877, the daughter of John Bailey.
School census records show William and family, as early as August 1913, in Daisy, Atoka Co., OK. They were in the city
at Atoka from 1916 through 1922. Land records show William buying and selling land in the county in 1914,
1916, 1917, 1919 and 1920. In 1930 William, a laborer, and Mary were living in McAlester, OK at 11 W.
Walker Ave. Living with them was their daughter, Marie, and William's parents.
Mary died 22 Apr. 1941 in Wilberton, where she had been living. Burial was in North McAlester Cemetery
near her father-in-law John E. and her brother-in-law James G. No record has been found as to the death
of William Joseph.
They had two adopted children, surname originally Shatto.
The first child of William Joseph and Mary E. Bailey was born 19/29 Nov. 1901/2/3 in Oklahoma. He was
living in Clovis, CA in 1941.
The second child of William Joseph and Mary e. Bailey was born in Oklahoma 18/28 Apr. 1905. She married a
Mr. GRIFFIN after 1930 and lived in Wilberton, OK in 1941.
The third child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was born ca1877 in Franklin Co., AL. She
md. ca 1899 to Walter G. Freeman who was born 21 or 23 Apr. 1872 in Boone Co., AR to Mr. Freeman and
Martha Wilks. In 1900 Mary Ella and Waalter were enumerated in Burke Township, Greer Co., OK; in 1910 they were in
Eldorado Township, Jackson Co., OK and still in the county in 1920, always farming.
One mention of Ellie is as a witness to a land purchase in Atoka Co., OK in 1914. Another is in a letter
from her father to a niece, Melissa Elizabeth McClung Burt, in 1930. Ellie had just paid him a short
visit in McAlester, OK before returning home.
Walter died 21 Jan. 1928 near Eldorado, OK - burial was the same day. Ellie, a Baptist, died 18 Nov.
1962 in Altus, Jackson Co., OK; interment was on the 20th. Both are buried in Eldorado Cemetery, in block
5-lot 1 as is son Bennie. There are no markers.
They had Effie Mae, born 20 Sept. 1900; Bennie, born around 1903; and William Earley Freeman, was born
31 Jan. 1904.
The fourth child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was born in August of 1885 in Mississippi. He was a
farm laborer and student in 1900 living with his family in Duke Township. Around 1904 he married
Maggie L. _?_ who was born circa 1884 in Texas. Clarence was farming in Eldorado, Jackson Co.,
OK in 1910. He sold land in Atoka Co., OK to his brother, William, in 1914. In 1925 Clarence and Maggie
resided at 213 E. Filmore Ave. in McAlester, OK where he was a laborer. By 1928 they were living on
Route #2 (Skyline Dr. and Jefferson Hwy.) north of McAlester, OK. In 1930 Clarence, a Missouri-Kansas-
Texas Railroad laborer, lived with Maggie at 112 E. Court Ave. in N. McAlester. Then in 1937 they lived
at 2709 N. 4th in the city. For 1942 Clarence was listed as a laborer living at 45 Smith Ave. By 1951 he
had become a partner in a business and resided at 223 E. Court Ave. Maggie, a widow, was listed at 309
E. Crisler Ave. in 1956. Clarence died between 1951 and 1956; Maggie herself probably died between
1956 and 1959. Clarence and Maggie had a son:

The first child of Clarence G. and Maggie L. McClung was born after 1910. He married between 1942 and 1951; the latter year he
and his wife, MARY A. resided at 702 E. Seneca Ave., Apt. 2, McAlester, OK. Floyd was driving a
cab for the C&H Cab Company. In 1956 they lived at 504 E. Monroe Ave. in McAlester. Floyd died between
1956 and 1959, for Mary was a widow the latter year. She was a machine operator for Elsings
Manufacturing Company and lived at 415 S. 3rd. By 1961 she had become a saleswoman for Pates Shoe
Store, residing at 413 S. 3rd; all was the same for her in 1962. She either died or moved away from
McAlester between then and 1964.
The fifth child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was born Feb 1888 in Franklin Co., AL. He
was deceased by 1900.
The sixth child of John E. and Emma Bishop McClung was born 4 Oct. 1886/7 in Iuka, Lee Co., MS. He
married Elizabeth C. Skirvin 26 Apr. 1913 at her home in Daisy, Atoka Co., OK. Lizzie was born 10 June
1888 in Missouri to Wesley E. and Rosa B. Skirvin.
In 1900 Burney lived with his family in Greer Co., OK where he was a farm laborer as well as a student.
From October of 1919 to October of 1920 he was a section laborer for the MKT RR in Choctaw, OK.
Burney and Elizabeth resided in Stringtown, Atoka Co., OK at that time; Elizabeth was the owner of a
hotel. Then from August 1922 to August 1936 he served as a car inspector for the railroad in McAlester,
OK. His residence in 1930 was at 2104 N. Main in N. McAlester. On 17 Aug. 1936, Burney suffered the loss
of a hand and part of an arm while in service to the railroad. In March 1937 he became a crossing
flagman for the railroad in Wagoner, OK, a position he maintained until 2 Jan. 1943. For a time in the
1940s Burney and Lizzie also lived in Savanna, Pittsburg Co., OK. They moved to California, where
Burney became a night watchman for Forrest Furniture Company, located at 621 S. Ridondo, Inglewood,
from March 1943 to 23 Nov. 1947. His last job was as cook at the Flamingo Cafe at G. and National
Streets in Chula Vista from December 1953 to February 1954.
Elizabeth died 26 Dec. 1970, probably at Mt. View, CA
where she was residing at the time. Burney had died 5 Mar. 1954 in San Diego, San Diego Co., CA of
Hodgkins Disease. Burial was in Inglewood Cemetery 8 Mar. 1954. At the time of his death, Burney and
Lizzie were residing in Chula Vista, CA.
Possibly the child of Burney Pinkney and Elizabeth Skirvin McClung died 25 Oct. 1918, interred in West
View Cemetery in Atoka, OK.
The seventh child of John G. with his second wife, Darthula Hale McClung was 19 June 1854 near
Red Bal, AL. He was
living with his father in Franklin Co. AL in 1870 at age 15. He was a Baptist minister. In 1877 he
married Carrie Margaret Martin who was born in November of 1858 in Mississippi or Alabama. Carrie was
the daughter of William Thomas Martin and Martha Epps, next door neighbors to the McClungs in Tishomingo
Co., MS in 1880.
In 1891, David was pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in southeast Tishomingo County. He was a dedicated
Baptist minister who later traveled many miles to preach God�s word. In spite of sickness he would keep
his preaching appointments. The Tishomingo County marriage books indicate that he performed many
marriages in the county. In 1900 Carrie and four of her children lived on their farm in Tishomingo
County. David and Carrie had five children.
Rev. David died in Mississippi. Carrie died in 1936. They were both buried in Jackson Camp Cemetery.
The first child of David Reed and Carrie Margaret Martin McClung was born 18 July 1878 near Golden,
Tishomingo Co., MS. When he died 26 Aug. 1965, burial was in the Tishomingo Cemetery. Luther, a farmer,
married Eva Leona Dean about 1902. Eva, born 19 June 1881 in Mississippi, died 1 Dec. 1958 and was also
buried in the Tishomingo Cemetery. These McClungs lived on a rented farm in Tishomingo County in 1900,
and again rented a farm in 1910, in Burnt Mills Precinct, Tishomingo Co., MS. Luther and Eva had six
children:
The first child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born in Mississippi in 1902/3. He died
in 1959 and was interred in Tishomingo Cemetery. Tommy and his wife, Mae (or May) Powell, was born about
1905. They had five children:
The first child of Thomas David and Mae Powell McClung was born 14 Mar. 1924. She married Justin B.
Patterson (date?). He was born 4 Apr. 1918; died 19 Oct. 1984 and was buried in Tishomingo Cemetery.
During WW II, Justin served with the U.S. Army (Tec 5).

The second child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born 30 July 1926. He married
Stella Cain (from whom he later separated). Buddy was a PFC in Mississippi Company B 82nd Airborne
Division during WW II; he was one of only twelve survivors of the six-day Elbe River Battle in Germany.
He and his son, James (Ray) McClung lost their lives in an auto accident
13 Apr. 1968. Buddy was buried in the Tishomingo Cemetery while Ray was buried in Old Union Cemetery in
the county.
The child of J.C. (Buddy) and Stella Cain McClung was born 1947.

Cleo, who resided in Tishomingo, MS, died 28 Nov. 1994 in Corinth, MS. Burial was in Tishomingo
City Cemetery following services at Tishomingo Baptist Church, of which Cleo was a member. Cleo�s son,

The son of Cleo Leona McClung was born 11 Dec. 1930. Raised by his McClung grandparents, Avon was a PFC
in the US Army in Korea. He died 25 Feb. 1982; interment was in Bethlehem Cemetery in Tishomingo County.

The third child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born 25 July 1908 in Tishomingo Co., MS.
On 1 May 1937 she married Phillips Barbor Mitchell, who was born in Prentiss Co., MS 7 Oct. 1909 and died
16 July 1963. Carrie made her home at Booneville, MS.
The fourth child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born in Tishomingo Co., MS 20 July 1910.
Finis married Easter Esther Smith, daughter of Willis Allen �Tac� Smith and Etna Rozella Beard, 21 Sept.
1929. She was born in Prentiss Co., MS 19 Aug. 1912. Finis and Esther lived all their lives in Tishomingo
County. He died 13 Oct. 1989 while she lived until 13 Dec. 1995; both were interred in Tishomingo
Cemetery.

The fifth child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born 7 Aug. 1915 in Tishomingo Co., MS.
Joe was a WW II Army veteran stationed at Okinawa; he spent 28 years with the Mississippi State Highway
Department. He died of leukemia in Tupelo, MS 8 Mar. 1992. This deacon in the Paden Baptist Church was
interred in Tishomingo Cemetery on the 10th. Noonan married Lela Medley, born 18 May 1924 in Paden,
Tishomingo County. That is where this McClung couple made their home.
The sixth child of Thomas Luther and Eva Leona Dean McClung was born 9 July 1918 in Tishomingo Co., MS.
He and Shirley Long, born 13 May 1923 to J.M. Long and Loris Cromeans, were married 20 Dec. 1941. He was
working in the ship yards in Akron, OH in 1943 and may later have been a member of the armed forces in
WW II. Bill died 18 Nov. 1980 and was laid to rest in the Tishomingo Cemetery. Shirley died 23 Aug.
1975; burial was in the same cemetery. One Child:
The daughter of Walter Scott and Shirley Long McClung was born and died 29 July 1946, was buried in
Highland Cemetery in Tishomingo County.
The second child of David Reed and Carrie Margaret Martin McClung was born in Mississippi 27 Aug. 1880.
When he died 14 June 1962, interment was in Jackson Camp Cemetery. In 1900 John was a farm laborer still
living at home. A farmer, he married Mittie Bell Butler [born in Mississippi 5 Mar. 1882 to James Thomas
Butler and Margaret Davis; died 7 Dec. 1951; buried at Jackson Camp] 17 Nov. 1901. They lived in
Tishomingo Co., MS in 1910, in Burnt Mills Precinct on the farm they were buying. The children of John
and Mittie, all born in Tishomingo County, are:

The first child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung
was born 21 Sept. 1902. She and her husband, Fred Ryan Goddard were both born near Paden in Tishomingo
Co., MS. Fred, son of Charles Thomas Goddard and Carrie Frances Searcy, died 23 Mar. 1977. Oma Lee passed
away 11 Feb. 2002. The three children of this couple are: Merle who md Henry V.Clark; Maury Gene; and a
daughter.
The second child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung was born 14 Mar. 1905. She married
Newman Rex McNatt born 2 Nov. 1903. Ora died 24 Jan. 1964 while Newman died 3 Apr. 1973; both were
interred at Jackson Camp Cemetery in Tishomingo Co., MS. They were the parents of four children: Wade,
Wayne, Augustine and Hilda McNatt.
The third child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung was born 14 Nov. 1907. She died 2 Dec.
1985; burial was at Jackson Camp Cemetery. She was married to Arlie C. McNatt, the son of Tom McNatt
born 22 Apr. 1905. Arlie died 29 June 1993 of congestive heart failure. Lola and Arlie were the parents
of: Clatus, Thomas A. McNatt and seven others.
The fourth child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung was born 28 Dec. 1909. She and her
husband, Clovis Allen Smith [born 18 Aug. 1904, died 27 May 1989], lived in Tupelo, MS. Zelma died 29 May
1993 of congestive heart failure in Tupelo, where she had been a resident of Traceway Manor. Husband and
wife are buried in Tishomingo Cemetery.
The fifth child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung was born 22 Feb. 1912. He married 1st
Lillian Sappington who was born 15 Nov. 1915, died 7 Oct. 1968, and was buried in Jackson Camp Cemetery.
They had a son, 1-8 Jr. David. Lee Ora _?_ became the second wife of James, who passed away 21 Mar.
1987; burial was beside Lillian. Lee Ora was this researcher's initial contact person for this branch of
the family. It was she who arranged a very enjoyable meeting of many Alabama-Mississippi McClungs for
this Alabama-Texas McClung in-law and husband in Iuka in 1987.
The child of James David and Lillian Sappington McClung was born 14 May 1935. Junior David died of a
heart condition in his own back yard 12 May 1993.
The sixth child of John Arthur and Mittie Bell Butler McClung was born 5 May 1914. She married 1st
Robert Calvin Dean and calls Tishomingo, MS home. She and Rob, a native of Mississippi born 22 Feb. 1908,
had no issue. He died at the age of 85 on 27 Aug. 1993 at Tishomingo County Nursing Facility in Iuka,
MS as a result of Alzhiemer's disease. Burial was in Tishomingo City Cemetery on the 29th. Rob, who had
been a carpenter, was a member of Tishomingo Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 412 in Paden, MS.

April 1979. Ollie had lived in Dennis, MS. Around 1905 she became the wife of Paton (Pate) Fleming.

The fourth child of David and Margaret Russell Gibson McClung was born 15 Jan 1825 in Morgan Co. AL.
He married 3 Dec 1846 to Sarah (Sallie) Maulden who was b. 17 Jan 1825 in Lawrence Co. AL to Hiram and
Elizabeth Whitworth Maulden. This McClung family lived in Itawamba County in 1850, then in Tishomingo
Co., MS in 1860, and in Colbert Co.,
AL in 1880. On Thursday, the 7th of October of the year the McClungs began a move from Allsboro, AL
with three wagons pulled by horses and mules; their destination was Hill Co., TX. William and Sarah
were, in 1900, living with their son Urah Zina(h) in Hill County. Sarah died 13 Mar. 1907, while
William died 18 Sept. 1909; both presumably passed away in Hill County. It is unknown whether or not
William Stuart was the W.S. McClung who was a sergeant in Co. H, Moreland's Regiment, Alabama Cavalry,
CSA. He and Sallie had 12 children: Mary
Elizabeth, Ransom, William Porter, Hiram McCutcheon, Chislam Jasper, Noah Fidela, John G/C. B.,
Stuart Oscar, Urah Zina, James Wood, Sallie Ella, and Andrew.
The first child of William Stuart and Sarah Maulden McClung was born in Mississippi 16 Jan. 1848.
Probably at Pleasant Site, AL she md James A. Horton [born circa 1847-TN; died between
1908-1910 near Cedar Grove School-Fletcher, Comanche Co., OK; probably buried in the Cement or the
Fletcher, OK cemetery] in 1867. The Horton family was enumerated in Hill Co., TX in 1880 with three
children. Shortly after the death of Mary E., James went to Arkansas where he remained at least through
1898. About 1908 he moved to Cedar Grove School District, Fletcher, OK. Along the line he remarried and
fathered four more children.
A member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Mary died 27 Feb. 1885, leaving behind four children.
To quote Mary's obituary, "Her life was marked with many Christian virtues. She was a devoted wife, an
affectionate mother, while her faith in Christ was strong and unshaken, both in health and in sickness.
Her four children were: James b. 1870; Catherine b. 1872; Cora b. 1882.

died 11 Aug. 1918 while William Porter lived until 24 Jan. 1921/24. Mattie and William Porter and their
daughter, Emma, are all buried in the Bell Springs Cemetery east of Hillsboro in Hill Co., TX. Their

had a son and a daughter. In 1920, this family was residing on a farm on the Bynum and Malone Road in
Bynum, Hill Co., TX, which was not very far away from his mother. Their residence in 1975 was
Weatherford, TX; in 1981 Mabel lived in Stamford, Jones Co., TX. The two known children of Everett

John Williford Garrett [born 3 Sept. 1867-Allsboro, Colbert Co., AL; died in Jan. 1949-Mertens, Hill
Co., TX; son of John Wright Garrett and Mary Jeanette Twitty and brother of George Washington who
married Nora�s aunt Sallie Ella; married 2nd Kittie Langford.
As a young man, John moved to Hill County, TX and married Nora McClung. John became a prominent farmer
and landowner in Mertens in the county. There he also served as lay Methodist minister. This seemingly
well-liked man enjoyed friendship and fellowship with people.
Nora was an exceptional horsewoman; she enjoyed breaking bucking horses when she was a girl. She was an
expert with a gun as well as an excellent cook. It is said that she had a sixth sense in judging the
character of people.
The Garretts lived in Rienzi as well as in Mertens, both in Hill Co., TX. In 1900 and also in 1910, the
Garretts were enumerated in Hill County on a farm they were buying. On the 1920 census, they are listed
as living on Barry Street in Mertens, still farming. The nine children of Nora and John were:

1980 in Hill County. Her place of residence was Hillsboro. She married Alvin Richard McClure
[born 24 Sept. 1901; died 5 July 1970-Hill County] and their children are: Jerry, a daughter.
The fifth child of William Stuart and Sarah Maulden McClung was born 26 Apr. 1855 in Mississippi. In
June of 1880 Jasper was a census worker in Colbert Co., AL. When the family made their move to Hill Co.,
X later that year, he kept a lengthy, day-by-day account. Jasper began his journal thusly: "After
bidding friends and relatives a painful farewell, we started, Misses Laura Harris and Melissa McClung
walking with me about half a mile. They then returned to their homes and I went on the wagons; feeling
sad and sick, I fixed a pallet in the wagon and lay down." The last entry was made on November 3rd as
they left from a 3-day stop-over visit with an Uncle Brad near Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co., TX. This
would have been John Bradford Fry, husband of Sarah Ann McClung. Jasper died in November of 1884.
The sixth child of William Stuart and Sarah Maulden McClung was born 20 Jan. 1857 in Mississippi.
Circa 1896 he married Mary Elizabeth Alexander, born in Texas 13 Jan. 1874. In 1900, 1910 and
1920 (that year at 600 Starr) they lived in Quannah, Hardeman Co., TX. Noah was a stock farmer in 1900
and then a well-driller in 1910 as well as in 1920. He passed away 29 May 1938, while Lizzie lived
until 1 Dec. 1943. All four members of this family were interred in Memorial Park Cemetery in Quannah;
on Noah's gravestone is the Eastern Star emblem. Noah's and Lizzie's children, born in Texas, were:

Hilton and Mary T. Cox]. In 1900, Urah's parents resided with this family in Hill Co., TX where Urah
was farming land he was purchasing. Urah died in Hillsboro, TX in March of 1905/6, thus in 1910 widow
Sarah boarded with the T.D. Williams family in Hillsboro, TX. In 1920 Sarah lived alone in Hillsboro,
at 600 Tarleton Ave. She passed away 15 Oct. 1948 in Hill County. Urah and Sarah had four Texas-born

McLennan Co., TX. He married Leland Edison [born 14 Jan. 1909; died 9 Feb. 1991-McLennan County]. They
lived in Waco, TX.
The second child of Jasper Clovis and Mollie D. Bourland McClung was born 7 Aug. 1912, died 20 Jan.
1993 in Hill County. He married Eva Dean Cagle [born 23 June 1915; died 26 Dec. 1996 in Hill County].

The fourth child of Urah Zina and Sarah Ellen Hilton McClung was born in Hill Co., TX 12 Jan. 1903.
Henry Connealison (Neal) Finch [born 11 Dec. 1896-Pleasant Site, Franklin Co., AL; died 26 Apr.
1964-Hillsboro, Hill Co., TX; buried Hillcrest Garden of Memories, Hillsboro] became her husband in
Hillsboro 11 Dec. 1919. Velma died in Hill Co., TX 27 Apr. 1995, just a few weeks after her oldest
son.
Neal lived and worked in Winters and Big Spring, TX before enlisting in the U.S. Navy; he served
from 1917 to 1919. A farmer, he also did many things on a part-time basis to supplement his income.
Among those can be listed census enumerator, tax assessor, and delivery truck driver. Neal, a charter
member of the Central Baptist Church of Hillsboro, he was among the first deacons ordained there.
Velma devoted her life to helping her husband run the farm as well as making a good home for her
husband and sons. According to her son Charles, she was a good farm wife but never lost sight of
the fact that she was a fine lady. As was her husband, she also was a charter member of Central Baptist
Church. At the age of 91 she was still driving her own car any place in Hillsboro where she wanted to go.
Velma was the mother of two sons: Charles Neal Finch, born 19 May 1923; another son name unknown.
The tenth child of William Stuart and Sarah Maulden McClung was born 6 Aug. 1866/67 in Alabama. In
1886 he married Fannie Findley (or Finkley) [born in September of 1869 in Texas/Kentucky; died after
1910]. James W. was a traveling salesman who resided in Hillsboro, TX. He died 2 June 1931 in Hill
County. His three children, all born in Texas, were:

The eleventh child of William Stuart and Sarah Maulden McClung was born 26 May 1870 in Colbert Co., AL.
She moved to Texas at age 11 in 1881 with her parents who settled near Hillsboro. Sallie Ella died
23/27 Nov. 1949 and was interred in the Bell Springs Cemetery east of Hillsboro, Hill Co., TX.. She
married in 1888 in Hill Co., TX George Washington Garrett. He was the son of John Wright Garrett and
Mary Janette Twitty and brother of John Williford Garrett who married Sallie�s niece Leonora McClung.
George, born 28 May 1865 in Colbert Co., AL, died about 30 Nov. 1922 in Hill Co., TX; burial was in
Bell Springs Cemetery. Sallie and George were the parents of seven children.
George is said to have been named for his Uncle George W. Twitty, a prominent citizen of Colbert Co.,
AL. George Garrett moved to Hill Co., TX at age 21 in 1886. Following his father-in-law, he was one of
the first of many to move there from Colbert Co., AL.
George was active in civic affairs in his farm community at Jesse and dedicated to his church
affiliation. He was instrumental in organizing the Sunday school in the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, serving a number of years as superintendent of the Sunday school, as well as an Elder of the
Church. George was a trustee on the School board at Jesse where he owned a large cotton farm. He was
a member of Masonic Lodge #196 in Hillsboro; he owned property in the Hillsboro area. In 1913, the
family moved to a home in Hillsboro, the seat of Hill County. There he was elected City Alderman in
1914, serving two terms. In 1920 he was elected State Representative with the 37th Texas legislature,
then in 1922 he was re-elected to the 38th legislature.
The flag was flown at half-mast at Austin when George was accidently killed in a hunting accident.
Funeral services were at Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Jesse. George was a devoted husband and
father, and he always had a helping hand for anyone in need. It is said by friends that George was
one of the best men that ever lived.
For the 1910 census George�s nephew John W. Garrett (age 17, born in Alabama) was living with the
family on the farm they were buying in Hill County. In 1920 his niece Mila Garrett (age 21, born in
Texas) was enumerated with this family, on their farm on the Hillsboro and Abbott Road in the same

Supposedly the twelfth child of William Stuart and Sarah Mauldin McClung. The only reference to him is in
The McClung Genealogy, 1904.
The third child of David and Margaret Russell McClung was born 20 Sep 1827 in AL. She married 23
Nov 1848 in Tishomingo Co., MS to John Bradford Fry who was b. 25 Apr 1829 in AL, the son of Henry Fry and Anny
Thomas. He and Sarah remained in Tishomingo County at least until after late
1860. Their next known place of residence was north of White Oak in Hopkins Co., TX in 1880. It was from
there that they migrated to Hill Co., TX.
Sarah and John had
at least four children: Margaret A. b. 1852; Henry David b. 1857; Sarah J., and James Uriah b. 1860.
The fifth child of David and Margaret Russell Gibson McClung was born between 1826 and 1830; he died after
1840. A descendant of his brother, William Stuart, had the only notation of him ever seen; she wrote

Lavinia McCord and David R. Gibson,
David being a great-grandson of 1-1 Hugh McClung, Section 1. He may be the J. McClung who received by
Military Act of 1850 80.11 7/8 acres in the west half of the northeast fourth of Township 7 south Range
2 west in Morgan Co., AL. Kittie and James had three children: John Riley, Sarah Savannah, and
Ambers Dotson Gibson.
After James died in Mississippi 17 Feb. 1860, Kittie and her family once again made their home with her
parents, this time in Frankfort, Franklin Co., AL. In 1870 she was next door to her daughter Betty in
Lawrence Co., AL. Kittie later moved to Texas to live with her daughter Betty in Hopkins County. There
she died in 1891 and was laid to rest in Oakland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in the county.
