Explanation: This file is extracted from the PA/VA group because this man lived most of his life
in Madison County, Alabama. Since most of his children's records can be found here, it seems
adviseable to publish his record where his family can be sorted out from the other Alabama lineages. His
father, Col. Charles McClung visited the area and made some investments in land in Alabama.
The listing of James White McClung can be found on page 30 of the old McClung Genealogy. This section,
like all the others, has been updated by descendants and continues to be. We bring the lines on down
to about 1940 or to the 8th generation. We do not post private information about the living.
The fourth child of Col. Charles and Margaret White McClung was born 6 June 1798. He
graduated at the University of NC where he studied law. He moved to Huntsville, AL and
rose to the front rank in his profession. He was one of the earliest attorneys in the
area. He was a member of the State Legislature;
Speaker of the House; President of the Senate; and at the time of his death, was a
candidate for the U.S. Senate without opposition. He practiced law in Madison County
where his records appear in many court records. (See Database: AL: Madison Co.).
James W. McClung married 1) 29 Apr 1823 to Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell. She was born ca 1802 to
David Brydie Mitchell, governor of Georgia. They had six children. James md 2) in 1834
to Elizabeth F. Spottswood. She was born 2 Feb 1812 to Elliott Spottswood (a desc. of Gov.
Alexander Spottswood of VA.) They had two children. She died 18 Sep 1837.
James W. Sr. married 3) 6 June 1839 to Margaret Patrick. She was born 6 June 1819, of
Huntsville. The record says that she died in Jan, 1892 in Huntsville, AL. .
The first child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born 13 Mar
1824 in Madison Co., AL. He md 1) in 1857 to Laura Bunch. They had no children. He
married 2) Alice Deqadrick. They lived at Knoxville, TN and had three children.
The first child of Charles William and Laura Bunch McClung was born in TN. He married
21 Feb 1888 to Margaret Dobbins. They resided in Birmingham, AL. They had one child.
The first child of Charles Pleas and Margaret Dobbins McClung.
The second child of Charles Pleas and Margaret Dobbins McClung. He did not marry. He
lived at Knoxville, TN.
The third child of Charles Pleas and Margaret Dobbins McClung. She married 28 Nov 1895 to
Kenneth K. Scott. They had children.
The second child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born 6 Dec 1825.
She married 15 Aug 1846 to Pleasant Miller McClung. He was born 19 Aug 1824 to Charles
McClung (son of Col. Charles and Margaret White, see below). He
was her cousin. They had children. He died 20 June 1863 and she died 29 July 1879.
The third child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born 29 Apr 1827.
He died young.
The fourth child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born at
Huntsville, Madison, AL 11 May 1829. He was educated at West Point and was a Civil
Engineer. He married 15 Nov 1870 to Trophie Catherine Carlisle of Aberdeen, MS. She was
born 15 Nov 1870. They had two children. He died 14 Feb 1891 in Rockport, TX.

1872. She resided at 330 W. 21st St. New York, NY.
The second child of Hugh Lawson White and Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born 16 Dec
1874. He resided at Philadelphia, PA.
The fifth child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born ca 1831.
He died young.
The sixth child of James White and (1) Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell McClung was born 19 Mar 1833.
Upon the death of his mother, he was adopted by John Robinson of Huntsville, AL and was
known as Matthew McClung Robinson. He married 19 Mar 1871 to Eliza Ann Snodgrass. She
was born 18 Feb 1853 in Cherokee Co., AL. They reared five children in Washington, DC.
The first child of Matthew McClung and Eliza Ann Snodgrass Robinson was born 28 May 1872.
He lived at Washington, DC and was employed in the office of Southern RR.
The second child of Matthew McClung and Eliza Ann Snodgrass Robinson was born 7 July 1874.
She married 16 May 1894 to William L. Stephens. They lived at Washington, DC.
The third child of Matthew McClung and Eliza Ann Snodgrass Robinson was born 22 Oct 1876. He
married 8 may 1901 to Frances Anna Meyers. He was employed in the office of Southern RR.
They lived in Washington, DC.
The fourth child of Matthew McClung and Eliza Ann Snodgrass Robinson was born 24 Aug 1879. He was
employed in the office of Southern RR and lived in Washington,DC.
The fifth child of Matthew McClung and Eliza Ann Snodgrass Robinson was born 11 Aug 1885.
She lived in Washington, D.C.
The seventh child of James White and (2) Elizabeth F. Spottswood McClung was born 4 Oct 1835
in Madison Co., AL. He md 1) Bettie Heiskell. She was born ____ to Mitchell Heiskell of
Morgantown, TN. They had two children. James md 2) 6 Oct 1872 to Sarah L. Ballard.
She was born 1856 in Canton, AR. They had four children. In the 1880 census, James
and Sarah were living in Cave Twp., Sharp County, AR with Florence and Elizabeth.
James died 25 Jan 1888 in AR (perhaps Sharp County).
After his death, Sarah md G. H. Pinkston of Canton, AR.
The first child of James White Jr. and Bettie Heiskell McClung was born 8 Oct 1869. He
married 20 Oct 1892 to Jennie Alice Davis. She was born 5 Apr 1871. She died 3 Feb 1902.
They had two children.
The eighth child of Elliott Spottswood and Jennie Alice Davis McClung was born 29 Jan 1894.
The second child of Elliott Spottswood and Jennie Alice Davis McClung was born 20 Dec 1898.
The second child of James White Jr. and Bettie Heiskell McClung died in infancy.
The third child of James White, Jr. and 2) Sarah L. Ballard McClung was born 2 Nov 1873.
The fourth child of James White, Jr. and 2) Sarah L. Ballard McClung was born 30 Aug 1878.
The fifth child of James White, Jr. and 2) Sarah L. Ballard McClung was born 26 nov 1881. She
died 8 July 1887.

The eighth child of James White and (2) Elizabeth F. Spottswood McClung was born 24 Aug.
1837. He married 12 July 1866 to Pattie Booth. She was born 12 Jan 1845 to Stephen Sorsby
Booth of Vicksburg, MS. They had no children. E. S. McClung died 24 Nov 1901.
The ninth child of James White and (3) Margaret Patrick McClung was born 20 Apr 1840. He
was a commercial traveler. He married 28 Oct 1869 to Virginia Taul Anderson. She was
born 9 Jan 1845. They reared four children.

The second child of William Penn and Virginia Taul Anderson McClung was born 28 Nov 1872. She

The eleventh child of James White and (3) Margaret Patrick McClung was born 22 Dec 1843. He
married 10 Feb 1870 to Buel Drake. Buel was born 18 Dec 1845. They reared two children
at Shallow Ford, TN.
The first child of Frank Armstrong and Buel Drake McClung was born 27 Sep 1871.
The second child of Frank Armstrong and Buel Drake McClung was born 2 Nov 1876. She
married 16 Oct 1899 to Barton Russell of Louisville, KY.
The twelfth child of James White and (2) Margaret Patrick McClung was born 1846. He
died in infancy.
The thirteenth child of James White and (2) Margaret Patrick McClung was born 4 July 1848.
He married 23 Nov 1871 to Mary Adelle Lee in Pickensville, Pickens Co., AL. She was
born 18 Sep 1850 (related to Gen. Robert E. Lee and on her maternal side to Stonewall
Jackson, her grandmother being the aunt of this famous military leader). Arthur and
Mary Adelle had six children.
The first child of Arthur Henderson and Mary Adelle Lee McClung was born 10 Apr 1873. She
married O. A. Quinn of Mississippi.
The second child of Arthur Henderson and Mary Adelle Lee McClung was born 12 Mar 1875. She
married H., P. Funderbark of Pickensville, AL.
The third child of Arthur Henderson and Mary Adelle Lee McClung was born 18 Feb 1877. She
married T. W. Johnson of MS.
The fourth child of Arthur Henderson and Mary Adelle Lee McClung was born 21 July 1881. She
died 28 July 1881.
The fifth child of Arthur Henderson and Mary Adelle Lee McClung was born 5 June 1884. He
died 27 Aug 1885.
