William McClung joined Col. John Alcorn's Regiment of Cavalry
and Mounted Gunmen in the War of 1812. He was a private under Capt. John J. Winston. Other McClungs in
this unit were Francis, Lasly, Alexander Montgomery, and David.
He might be the William who died in 1827 with James McClung, administrator of his estate. That
William was born in 1804 but would have been too young to be a soldier in the War of 1812. Also it is
unlikely that the Rev. McClung, b. 1804 would have been a constable in 1818 as he was training for the
ministry.
Limestone County record: Orphans' Court, dated 17 Aug 1827, p. 113
William McClung died intestate. James McClung applied for Letters of Administration. Wm. T. Gamble and
Aaron Redus, his securities. David J. Gatewood and Robert C. Davis and John B.Elliott are appointed to
appraise the estate of William McClung, decd. Also: Orphans' Court Minutes, p. 68. Dated 6 Feb 1828:
James McClung appointed administrator for William McClung, decd. Reported that the estate was insolvent.
It is possible that there were two Williams in Alabama after 1818. Further work is needed.
