His father was likely a John McClung as shown in Alabama Records, Vol. 24 Limestone County Deeds pg 215. This deed is registered in March 1828 showing a John McClung indebted to his sons: Hugh and David. We suspect that the father of John was the Hugh in Greene Co., TN but we are starting the Alabama branch as John with 1-1 (birth order / generations)

Hugh was born 1782 in area that became Tennessee. He is found in the 1830 census for Limestone County, Alabama and in the 1840 census for Talladega County, Alabama. Hugh married Phoebe Hubbert in ca 1803. She was born 7 Jan 1785 in North Carolina to Col.James Hubbert and Elizabeth Anderson. She died 1 Nov 1844 in Talladega, AL.

The Lebanon, TN Newspaper, dated April 25, 1845 (Vol 4:1): Died in Talladega County, Alabama 1 Nov 1844--Mrs. Phebe McClung, age 60; was the wife of Hugh McClung and the daughter of the late Col. James Hubbard of Tennessee. She left her husband and eight children.

John H., the eldest child died the winter of 1845-6. Hugh was the administrator of that estate. That must have been very difficult for him. He died later that year in Talladega County, Alabama between 1840-50; possibly in 1846 as Anderson McClung is appointed administrator of the estate of Hugh McClung on 17 Sept 1846 (Will Book C:65)

The second child of Hugh and Phoebe Hubbert McClung was born 1806 in Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Evans 18 Jan 1827 in Limestone Co., AL. She was b. 1806 in KY and died in Talladega Co., AL in 1880. Anderson died 3 June 1871. They had nine children.

The first child of Anderson and Elizabeth Evans McClung was born 1829 in AL. She married James A. Niven 10 Jan 1853 in Talladega Co., AL. He was killed in a Civil War battle in Virginia. She died in 1899. They had five children. in 1899.

The second child of Anderson and Elizabeth Evans McClung was born 3 June 1830 in AL. She married Ewell Jackson Morris, Sr. 17 Jan 1856 at Talladega Co., AL. He was born 1 Nov 1817 in Georgia and died 7 Jan 1865 in Talladega Co., AL. He death was from complications developed in the Civil War. Henritta died 25 April 1894 in Talladega Co., AL. This family moved to Arkansas in the late 1830s and was in the Saline Co., AR census in 1840. they were in the Jefferson Co. Census in 1850 and had moved back to Saline Co. by 1860. Joseph died 7 Apr 1862 in Jackson Co., MS. They had ten children. After Joseph died, Jane moved to Erath County, Texas with the family.

By 1860 Jesse, b. 1815 AL is found in Jackson County census (P. 15, Bellefont, AL #105/105) with younger wife, Mildred b. 1821. No children in this household.

Possibly the eighth child of Hugh and Phoebe Hubbert McClung was born 1822 as per the census of 1850, Jefferson Co., AR. He is included here because he is living next to Joseph and David McClung, and gives his birth state as AL. He married Matilda who was born in 1827 in AL. The sixth child given as a William also.

The ninth ? child of Hugh and Phoebe Hubbert McClung was born 1825 in AL. He married Mary Harrison 5 Aug 1845 in Talledega Co., AL. She was b. 1825 in AL and died after 1870 (1870c Darysaw Twp, Grant Co., AR but was not in the 1880c). They had eight children.

The first child of David L. and Mary Harrison McClung was born 12 May 1846 in AL. She was sometimes called Melissa Jackson by descendants. She married Seth Land Atchley 16 Feb 1868. He was born 20 Sep 1839 to Amos and Angelina Trotter Atchley. He had served in the Confederate Army under the command of Captain Telford Ware. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh and only lived a few years after the war was over. He kept a diary of his military service and engagements. He served in Co. A, 11th Infantry of Arkansas. Seth was a cabinet maker. He died 23 Nov 1886 in Sherican, Grant, AR.

Their children were: Mary Amelia, b. 21 Nov 1868; Daniel L, b. 28 Apr 1870; Telford Ware, b. 29 Nov 1871; David Amos, b. 5 Mar 1873; Joseph Withers, b. 23 Dec 1874; Walter Oscar Atchley, b. 1878 and killed by lightning. The children were born at Sheridan in Grant Co., AR. Some of them moved to Bowie, TX.

The second child of David L. and Mary Harrison McClung was born 1848 in AL.

William Joseph McClung was born January 24,1850 in Jefferson County Arkansas. He was the third child and first son born to David L. and Mary (Harrison) McClung who lived and farmed in Darysaw Township of Jefferson County which was later divided to make Grant County. David was born in Talladega County Alabama in 1825. David and Mary Harrison were married in Talladega County on August 5, 1845.

William Joseph lived in Arkansas with his family until 1866 when he moved to Cedar County Missouri with William Shelton family who lived near the McClung family. It seems possible that David McClung may have died around this time and this could have caused him to move. David is not in the 1870 Grant County census, but his wife Mary and remaining children are.

In 1869 William married Nancy Melvina Shelton the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Stewart) Shelton. She was born January 4, 1849 in Marion County Tennessee.

After they were married they moved first to Jackson County, Missouri, and then returned to Cedar County Missouri. In March 1878 he purchased 40 acres of land from Shadrack Chandler & wife for $200. The land was the N.E. � of the N.W. � Section 36 Township 34 Range 28. Recorded in book R page 602 Cedar County Deeds. In November 1880 he purchased another 40 acres from D.P. Stratton & wife for $1,500. The land was the S.E. � of Section 29 Township 34 Range 27.. Recorded in book R page 359 Cedar County Deeds.

They had seven children, six sons and one daughter. David Lawrence b. 1870, Andrew Sylvister b. 1872, Bartley Leander b. 1873, Melville Lafayette b. 1876, Middleton Frank, b 1878, Delilah Bell b. 1881, George W. b. 1886.

In 1890 they sold out and moved to Indian Territory stopping to live on land owned by the Kaw Indians near Washunga. Later they leased land from Indian owners until the opening of the Cherokee Outlet in 1893. William J. and his three oldest sons David, Andrew and Bart went to the Kansas line to make the run, but; not finding any land to their liking returned home. They continued to live on Indian land farming the Arkansas River bottom land, and raising cattle and hogs. By 1900-01 William J. had purchased 160 acres of land on the west side of the Arkansas River. Andrew, Bart, and Melville each purchased 160 acres from Indian owners on the east side of the Arkansas River. A few years later Bart purchased another 80 acres.

William J. and Nancy continued to live on their farm north of Uncas, Oklahoma until she died on December 12, 1922. He later moved into Newkirk, Oklahoma, where he died on March 2, 1925.

They were both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery south of Uncas. However the cemetery was moved to the I.O.O.F cemetery south of Ponca City, Oklahoma, because of the construction of the Kaw Lake Dam in 1968. (Researcher: John McClung)
