The second child of James and Elizabeth McPheeter McClung was born in Virginia about 1800. He moved to Alabama where he married Susan M. Gray 30 Nov. 1830 in Lawrence Co., AL. This marriage was reported in the Nashville TN newspapers: National Banner & State Gazette 9 Dec 1830 and the National Banner & Nashville Whig 10 Dec 1830. Susan was born 20 June 1812 the daughter of Dr. Young A.Gray. They moved to Franklin Co., AL (adjoining county).

John A. apparently had become an attorney with T. Keenan. Orphan's Court Record in Limestone County: John A. McClung and Thomas Keenan, securities. 7 May 1831. Henry Fort resigns as guardian of James B. Gray. Young A. Gray appointed guardian.

John A. was only about 30 years old when he died. Susan died 10 Sep 1832. John died 13 Sep 1832, just three days after Susan. It was reported to the family that he died in Florence, Alabama. He, Susan and their young son were buried in the City Cemetery at Tuscumbia, AL (Colbert County). (AL Records by Gandrud, Vol 56:21 and Vol. 75).

They had one known child: James Y. McClung born 3 Sep 1831 and died 1 Sep 1833, one year after his parents died.

By 1855 there were a few McClungs in Franklin Co., AL but they may not be close relatives. They were James and John, b. before 1834 - who may be descendants of Hugh McClung. Rev. David McClung also lived in the Franklin/Colbert county area.
