St. Louis Deed Bk A:306. Kincaid Caldwell sells a Negro girl to Mary Philip LeDuc of St. Louis. He had purchased the Negro in 1801.

Kinkead's first land in Missouri was in 1803: Sec 6, Twp 44, R1W. (Goodspeed:221)

CL-6-1 WILLIAM CALDWELL

The first child of Kinkead Caldwell and his first wife, Sarah Kincaid Caldwell was born 5 Dec. 1788 in VA or KY. He died 18 Sep 1804 at age 16 or thereabouts; probably too young to have married.

CL-6-2 ANDREW KING CALDWELL

The second child of Kinkead and Sarah Kincaid Caldwell was born 17 Dec 1789 in VA or KY. He married Polly P. Daugherty 28 Feb 1811 in MO, Louisiana Territory, Labbadia Twp. (St. Louis Mg Bk A, p.1). He died 16 Mar 1847. There is an Andrew Caldwell residing in Franklin Co. in 1830 in Boles Twp. with 8 in the family.

CL-6-4 SAMUEL K. CALDWELL

The fourth child of Kinkead and Sarah Kincaid Caldwell was born 11 Jan 1793 in Bourbon Co. Kentucky. He married Charlotte McBride 9 Aug 1816 by Thos. McBride, minister at Labbadie Twp, St. Louis County. (St. Louis Mg Bk A, p. 12). In 1818 he purchased land in Franklin Co. with Matthew Caldwell. They divided the nw qtr Sec 34, Twp 44, R1W.

Samuel K. Caldwell lived in Pike County as early as 1818. Before 1818, Mr Bryso staked the land that is known as Lousiana. In 1818 Samuel and Joel Shaw (who's house still stands on the corner of 3rd and Virginia) were so impressed with the land selection that they bought half of Bryso's property. (Copy of the original sale is in the Sesquentenial book as there was not a court house yet.) In the courthouse deeds office, the first 4 to 5 pages are at least three quarters of Samuel K Caldwell selling plots to someone else.

There is another Samuel who appears on the Boone Co. MO tax list in 1821. His wife, Charlotte died in 1839. We have a note that he went to Jasper County and another that he remained in Boone Co. He died 11 Aug 1880. We find him in the 1860 census of Jasper County. He appears to have three sons there: Thomas b. 1818 md Lucinda; K. K. (Kinkead?) b. 1820, md Mary; and James R. b. 1827 in MO, md Celia. Thomas has a large family: Samuel H., John Franklin, David M., Mary C., Sarah M., Narcissa, Nancy A. and father, Samuel, living with them. His wife had died and he was 66 years old. All these families were at Sarcoxie.

He operated the first ferry across the Missouri River at Washington Landing, Missouri. (Robt Ramsey, "Place Names of Franklin County, MO, p. 15). Goodspeed has: 1822 John licensed to keep a ferry at Washington. John died 4 Jan 1862.

This John married Mary Ann Stockton 20 Oct 1829 in Boone County, MO, according to records of Arthur Caldwell. However Samuel Caldwell was in Boone Co. in 1830. They are listed in the 1860 census of Franklin County in the St.John's Twp., #765: John b. ca 1795 in KY; Mary A. b. ca 1811 in KY; Thos. H. b. ca 1835 in MO; Seth A. b. ca 1838 in MO; Samuel K. b. ca 1844 in MO.
