John McClung (1770s - 1830s) TN>AL

JOHN McCLUNG

(1770s-1830s) TN TO AL

This man was born in the 1770s (1830 c Morgan, AL) and married his wife in Tennessee. The families listed in the 1830 census of Morgan County Alabama appear to be a family. We are listing them here until we learn differently. It appears that John died in the 1830s and the family moved away except for James who was listed just as J. McClung in the 1840 census of Morgan County.

Morgan County borders Madison and Limestone counties, separated by the Tennessee River. The river provided the travelway into Alabama from eastern Tennessee. Morgan County was formed in 1818 from Indian lands. The following year Col. Charles McClung from Knox Co., TN sold a slave in Morgan County. By 1824 Rev. David McClung was performing marriages there and was probably living there until about 1829 when those records ceased. Hugh McClung's son, Anderson was married there in 1827 and most likely is the Andr. McClung listed in the 1830 census.

In Alabama the Orphans' Court Minutes cover many details of estate settlements. We find that Thomas D. Crabb, decd. May 1829 made Inventory. Bonds due the estate or notes due:

#24: John McClung for $25 due 1 Mar 1826
#10 John McClung and Jeremiah Hope $1.25 due 1 Jany 1829
#40 Francis McClung $38 due 1 Jan 1827 (This Francis was probably a son of William who died 1818.

From the above, we know that John McClung was in Morgan County as early as 1826. Some of the records in northern Alabama which have been attributed to John A. McClung may belong to this John.

DESCENDANTS

I. JAMES McCLUNG

Probably the eldest son of John McClung was born in the 1790s in Tennessee. He appears in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Morgan County. He had a rather large family but we do not know where they are after 1840. By 1850 James could possibly have died. His wife was born ca 1800. The list of their children as extrapolated from the 1830 and 1840 censuses:

1. son b. 1815-20
2. dau. b. 1815-20
3. dau. b. 1820-25
3. dau. b. 1825-30
4. son b. 1825-30
5. dau. b. 1825-30
6. son b. 1830-35
7. son b. 1830-35

Of course there could have been children born and died between census enumerations.

II. CHARLES McCLUNG

Probably a son of John McClung was born in Tennessee in 1796. He probably married his first wife back in Tennessee. He md Sabrina Laninham 12 July 1845 in Bibb County, Al. He was in Morgan County where his family was enumerated in 1830. We have not located his enumeration in 1840. By 1850 he is living in Bibb County with Sabrina. His two eldest children may have been married back in Morgan County.

1. son born 1820-25
2. dau born 1820-25
3. Carlile H. born ca 1828 in AL; Married Rachel Huffman 22 Sep 1850 in Bibb County.
4. Jane P. born 1830 in AL; married James Ray (Rea) 6 Sep 1851 in Bibb County.
5. Hannah C. born 1832 in AL; Married Uriah Kelley 24 Dec 1850 in Bibb County.
6. Elizabeth C. born 1833 in AL.
7. Rachel born ca 1837 in AL.
We have record that 20 Sep 1847 in Bibb County, Charles McClung was witness to the will of Nathan Daly. This was probated 20 Sep 1847. Nathan's wife was Rosanah. No children. Leaves to children of bro. William and Owen Daly. We wonder the relationship, if any, to Charles. It is possible that this is the father of his first wife who died.

III. Son born 1800 to 1810
------------------------

In 1830 there were two little girls born 1825-30 that could be granddaughters or children born to a second marriage in John's household.
