This man was born in the 1770s (1830 c Morgan, AL) and married his wife in Tennessee. The families
listed in the 1830 census of Morgan County Alabama appear to be a family. We are listing them here
until we learn differently. It appears that John died in the 1830s and the family moved away except
for James who was listed just as J. McClung in the 1840 census of Morgan County.
Morgan County borders Madison and Limestone counties, separated by the Tennessee River. The river
provided the travelway into Alabama from eastern Tennessee. Morgan County was formed in 1818 from
Indian lands. The following year Col. Charles McClung from Knox Co., TN sold a slave in Morgan County.
By 1824 Rev. David McClung was performing marriages there and was probably living there until about
1829 when those records ceased. Hugh McClung's son, Anderson was married there in 1827 and most likely
is the Andr. McClung listed in the 1830 census.
In Alabama the Orphans' Court Minutes cover many details of estate settlements. We find that
Thomas D. Crabb, decd. May 1829 made Inventory. Bonds due the estate or notes due:
From the above, we know that John McClung was in Morgan County as early as 1826. Some of the records in
northern Alabama which have been attributed to John A. McClung may belong to this John.
Probably the eldest son of John McClung was born in the 1790s in Tennessee. He appears in the 1830 and
1840 censuses of Morgan County. He had a rather large family but we do not know where they are after
1840. By 1850 James could possibly have died. His wife was born ca 1800. The list of their children as
extrapolated from the 1830 and 1840 censuses:
Probably a son of John McClung was born in Tennessee in 1796. He probably married his first wife back
in Tennessee. He md Sabrina Laninham 12 July 1845 in Bibb County, Al. He was in Morgan County where
his family was enumerated in 1830. We have not located his enumeration in 1840. By 1850 he is living
in Bibb County with Sabrina. His two eldest children may have been married back in Morgan County.
In 1830 there were two little girls born 1825-30 that could be granddaughters or children
born to a second marriage in John's household.
