Some of the Canadian McClungs immigrated from Scotland and Ireland at later times and some
of them may be Loyalists from America. Immigration records in Canada has a site you can
search at: INGENEAS
to see if we have any McClungs in their records. We have noted that there were several men
by the name of David McClung who may or may not be related who lived in Ontario.
The Ozarks Genealogical Society has just released new purchases of the Alabama Court Records.
We hope that these volumes will have some helpful information for the lines who went into
Alabama.
We have recently extracted the McClungs from the Mortality Schedules of Arkansas. This was
a listing of the people who had died in the previous year of the census.
I found this in GA records: William McClung, deceased, John Carson was issued Letters of
Administration on 29 July 1786 with Richard Bonner and James Wooten securities, in the
Richmond Co. GA Administrator Bonds. This appears to be your William whom you mentioned
died intestate in 1786 in GA. The administrator of an intestate was most often a blood
relative, someone who would look out for the interests of the family. John Carson may
have been a relative of the wife, if William left a wife living. Did his descendants settle
in Richmond Co. GA? Answer: We do not know at this point. The children listed in the old
McClung Genealogy (1904) appear to be his grandchildren, rather than children. We have a
Robert McClung and a John McClung in Georgia Colonial Records who would have been of the
generation to be children of this man. Hopefully the original record of the probate will
contain a list of heirs.
The North Carolina connection: The Bellah and Lynn/Linn family from North Carolina were
closely connected to Soldier John.
Here is the Lynn/Linn website: Linn
You will notice that this family was also from Ayreshire, Scotland. The William McClung
who may be the one who died in Richmond Co.GA may be the William from Wilmington, DE who
married Rebecca Linn (McC Gen 1904:42).
Bill Davenport has been working on John Sr's descendants from the last two marriages. We
have posted this in two new files: John's Second Family and the John and Nancy Luster
McClung family. We do not know the name of the second wife. They just had a few children
before she died. Bill located James Buford in the 1880 census and that has opened up a lot
of research to be done in Arkansas. James Buford was the son of John and Nancy. He had
about 16 children from two wives. Apparently his first wife died. He left the children
with a Shaker community. This is all very interesting reading. We are sure you will enjoy
it.
We had hoped to find a guardianship record for John McClung,Sr. in the Colonial Georgia
Guardianship Papers 1757-1770. That microfilm arrived this week but there was no Mcclung
listed. See what you folks can find on colonial Georgia in your locality. There have
been a number of books published but are not available in Springfield, MO without
purchasing. We are looking for McClung, Linn/Lynn, Bellah and McCormick in these
records. Whenever you are checking the indexes of a book, also look under McLung as
they were often recorded that way.
We have posted information about a Jonathan McClung who lived in Marion County, Georgia.
He married about 1842 and by 1850 had three children: Mary, James, and Martha. We
advertised on the Marion County Message Board at RootsWeb and had two responses.
Olin McClung (who had written before) says that he is a descendant of this man and that
he is buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Marion Co. Then Judith Gresham started doing
look-ups for us (her parents are from Marion County, but not McClung) and found this
family in the 1870 census: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rootsr/Ga-Marn-c.htm
In the Old Bethel Methodist Cemetery located in NW Marion County just off 252 on County Rd.
74 there are the following McClungs buried. This is from Rena Cobb's book "History of
Marion County" published in 1997'
There is also a list of veterans drawing pensions from the civil war from 1890-1913.
Jonathon McClung is listed among them. The State of Georgia will send a copy of the
records to you. I also found a microfilm at the FHC index, that had the pension
applications etc on it for Marion County, it is LDS Film # 0359660 . Thank you,
Judith Gresham.
We are still left to wonder about where this Jonathan fits into the family tree. He was
born in 1822 in Georgia. We had thought that he was the son of John who md Rebecca Nix.
This family has their Jonathan with them in 1850 in Talbot County. He had not married.
The Jonathan in Marion Co. was married and with three children by 1850. So we have two
Jonathans. In looking at our chart, we note that Reuben Sr. had a son, John b. 1821
(close enough for census work) but a descendant has traced this John through Arkansas to
Milam Co. TX by 1880 where he died so he couldn't be the one buried in Bethel Cem.
We have updated the Carroll Co., GA census page to include in the 1870 census, a Reuben,
born 1855:
Marjorie L. Wages has been doing research on Reubin (Reuben?) McClung Sr. for a number of
years. She has just this week sent us a packet of information on this man. Most of it is
photocopies of the pages where the research is found. Some of it is in the original
handwriting and may take a while to get it typed and coded for the site. This is some
wonderful research and may give us a new perspective on the early McClungs of Georgia.
We are reviewing the family of William (2-2 p. 18, McC Gen) who was born in Ireland and
landed at Philadelphia ca 1740. By 1742 with his brothers, James and Hugh to Augusta
(Rockbridge) to the Borden Grant. He died about 1783 and will proved in Rockbridge Co.,
VA. His marriages were in Ireland. He was the father of Charles who had no children;
Mathew (md Martha Cunningham), whose son Col. Charles laid out the town of Knoxville, TN;
William of Delware who md Rebecca Linn; James, whose son, William moved to Wilkes Co. Ga
and md Euphemia Cunningham; John who md Elizabeth Alexander and had numerous progeny in VA,
KY, etc; and possibly Hugh who moved to Alabama. Are we seeing the connections here to
the Georgia lines we have been researching?
The McClung Genealogy (1904) has some errors and we need to go back and revisit these
early connections. The old book has that William of Delaware died in Wilmington. A
search of New Castle County probates is needed as well as seeing the original record down
in Richmond GA to see if these two men are one and the same.
We have posted the beginnings of the James, Jr. file. There was an error at the bottom of
page 16 in the old McC. Gen (1904) and it appears that someone was left out. We hestiate
to include page 17 until this is clarified. Can anyone help? We are sure that Randy had
this cleared up but we do not have access to his work at this time.
From Terry Carpenter: Searching the Maryland Marriage Records, we find this marriage
that we cannot place:
Can you help with this one? Sandra Humphries Raedel has sent a jpg of the 1930 Census of a
McCLUNG Family located in Lewis Co. WV (all born in WV). It looks like W. F. McClung md
to Icy Mae. According to the 1930 Census, THIS McCLUNG marriage should have taken place
about 1924 (according to Icy Mae/May UNKNOWN). She states she's 38 years of age & was
age 32 at the time of her first marriage in the 1930 Census. Icy M. McCLUNG's husband
whose first name is illegible had been md. once previously, probably in 1901 (again,
according to the 1930 Census; says he's 52 & was md at age 23 (OR 28 at the time of his
first marriage). This one has had us STUMPED! Can anyone help? You can see it at:
We have added a few more McClung deeds and many references to their allied lines. This
should help descendants with their ancestry and perhaps help forge connections to McClungs.
You may use it at:

If you are researching Canadian records, send in your snail-mail addy and we can send you a
copy of previously published Canadian records. Lottie Herrington has contributed research
on Canadian McClungs. Perhaps you can take what she has sent and enlarge upon that. We
would appreciate an email (or attachment) copy of the Canadian McClungs so it can be posted
to our site.
From Steve: I am James Stephen McClung; I stumbled on this web sight yesterday by
luck you could say. I was born in Leslie WV in 1950 my fathers name is James Vespie, born
in 1930 and his father was James Lowell, that's all I can find out at this time other then
my dad had two uncles, their names were Frank, and Lake. If you could please pass on any
information, or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate you help. Who
knows we may be long lost cousins. My email address is [email protected]. Thanks in
advance. (Does this family sound familiar to anyone?)
From Mary McPherron: Do you have any information as to why William McPherron (1787)
of Knox County, TN, previous, PA, named his first daughter Adaline McClung McPherron. She
married Eli Skaggs, Jr. Any information would be appreciated.
this week. The freepages site will need to have all the "Write Me" notices changed to the
new address.
You can e-mail me at Judith McClung if you have corrections or additions to our record.
