THE McCLUNG FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

April 2004

Designed to Bring Together Research on McClungs Everywhere

Editor: Judith A. McClung

Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing of volume 31 are listed as "New".

The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions. In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.

ALABAMA McCLUNGS:

For almost as long as the McClung Family Association has been in existence, Suzy Burt has been a contributor. We were out of touch for a number of years while we were starting to use the internet as a way to publish our work. She is back with us now and has made contributions to bring us up to date on her work. She is a descendant of John G. McClung, son of Rev. David McClung so has worked on the Hugh Sr. Lineage. We are making links to her work and presenting it separately so that you can go ahead and read it. The coding is incomplete as we are having difficulties changing the format from outline form to the one we use with the HTML. Suzy has also brought down all the female lines which we do not index into our system. She has done extensive work on the Gibson family and other allied lines. Her documentation is presented at the bottom of each file. As we are able, we will copy the information about the McClung men into our main system and hope to be able to index them all eventually.

We have made an index to Suzy Burt's work. At the moment the lines run off the page but we will have that corrected later. Keep watching.

From a post on the RootsWeb Message Board:
2. JESSE*2 MOORE (HENRY*1)79,80,81,82,83 was born 15 January 1815 in Madison Co., Alabama84, and died 1862 in Jackson Co., Alabama84,85. He married (1) ABIGAIL* MCCLUNG 86,87,88,89,90 23 July 1834 in Limestone Co., Alabama (Finis E Harris, G.M. Officiating)91,92, daughter of HUGH* MCCLUNG and PHOEBE* HUBBARD. She was born 15 November 1815 in Tennessee93, and died 18 October 1852 in Morgan Co., Alabama93. He married (2) MILDRED G. GRAHAM 14 April 1853 in Madison Co., Alabama94. She was born Abt. 1820, and died 1862. (We were also sent a lot of info on this Moore family on April 22. If you would like a copy, write in and it can be forwarded to you.)

We still do not know the lineage of the William who died 1819 in Madison County. His executor was Alexander Montgomery McClung and was probably his son. We hope that descendants will work this lineage and help find how this family connects to the Hugh line or to the other McClungs from eastern Tennessee. Because of the other family names at William's sale, we feel that they were probably closely related.

Some of Robert McClung's family from Georgia remained in Alabama. Bill Davenport has contributed censuses from Marion County to the 1870 census record of Alabama.

ARKANSAS McCLUNGS:

Can someone working in Arkansas records check the Van Buren County cemetery records to see if Nancy Luster McClung is buried there? She was 84 in the 1870 census there and that is the last we find her in census records. It is likely that she died there. She was the last wife of Soldier John of Georgia. John died in Sumner County, TN but it looks like Nancy died in Arkansas.

GEORGIA McCLUNGS:

Bill Davenport has done some more work on Soldier John's third family. He has found Julia Ann McClung Jones in census records and found the marriages of some of this family. Also, the 1860 census for Butler County, MO shows that James Buford McClung also had a son, John McClung, age 1, born in Missouri. Bill states: I have wondered what happened to this boy. There is no mention of him being left at Shakertown with the girls. Do you suppose he died in 1860? His mother, Molly apparently died in 1860, too.

John's daughter by the second marriage, Julia Ann, has been moved to that file and is no longer in the file of John and Nancy Luster McClung.

Vinyard McClung is being researched by Debbie Yates. This is also Bill Davenport's Robert line. Debbie is a descendant of Vinyard through Amanda who md Benjamin Williams. She has sent in much information about Vinyard and some for Robert. She has brought some of the census records on down for some of these families and they are included in this file. Mildred Fourner has contributed to this effort by sending in censuses for the Winston, Walker, Hancock area where this family resided.

We have updated some of the files of Soldier John with Bill Davenport's research. Elizabeth who md Wright Roden is at the end of the file for John Jr.. Also in the file of Robert there is new information about Louhena McClung.

Mickey Fournier writes: I have assumed, as has everybody with whom I have corresponded that Vineyard is a son of Robert McClung and Mary Roden. He lived in Walker County very near my Wright Roden, brother of the afore-mentioned Mary. However, so far as I know, no proof exists! We need the death date of Mary O'Dell or the marriage record for Mary Rhoden. These may have been in the Carolinas.

Penny Bashe ([email protected]) is working on Richard's line. She is descended from James Andrew McClung, son of Richard who ended up in Kansas. His nickname was Dan. See: Richard. She has also send in the application of Andrew Jackson McClung for his claim as a member of the Eastern Cherokee.

Marjorie Wages is working to clarify some things in the Reuben file. She writes: I went over to Jackson County and found Macajah Williamson's will. I have made a copy for you. Jim Crutchfield from Macon sent me some valuable information on Polly. She WAS the daughter of Jacob Early.

We have added some notes to the records of the Linn family. We are searching for the Hugh and Robert Linns who might be the ancestors of Soldier John McClung. These records were submitted to the Pedigree Resource File. Contact info is provided but might not be good for long.

GREENBRIER McCLUNGS:

Bruce McClung is updating file #204, the descendants of Edward McClung

Caroline Zobeck has sent in the obituary for Armenta McClung (#3522) in File 174.

Judith Weber and Jeanne Snider have sent in this picture of their father, Glen Gene McClung from file 153 (G1855). They also sent in his obituary.

Harry S. McClung has sent in the Civil War Parole document for Silas Brown McClung (File 187, G4692).

PA/VA McCLUNGS:

The Butler County Deeds - book E has a deed dated 1815 wherein Joseph McClung of Baltimore Co., MD purchases land in Sec 21, Twp 3, Range 3. Which Joseph would this be? He would have to have been born ca 1790 or earlier. He may have moved westward after that.

-----------------------

Charley Wilson is updating the file of William's First Family specifically on the descendants of William who md Euphemia Cunningham. He is a descendant and also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He states that even though most people in eastern Tennessee fought for the Union, these McClungs were confederate soldiers. On p. 69 (McC Gen) we have a statement that the William who was son of John and Nancy Jane Wilson McClung, served in the Federal army.

Sent in by Bill Davenport:

This referenced article is apparently a historical writeup regarding this couple and their children. I looked at the PA archives site but have not been able to run down anything, yet. Of course they were married in November 1759 so the birth dates of the children as being in 1750s are wrong. However, if the names are correct, it should hopefully be a help.

SOUTH CAROLINA McCLUNGS:

C. Turner Lewis has sent in some valuable information on the descendants of Jemima McClung and her daughters: Mahala, Mary, and Jane. Mahala md Wesley Plunkett and Mary and Jane, twins, married Wesley brothers. No doubt these families had traveled together for quite some time. We are not given the parentage of Wesley Plunkett, but one wonders if his mother were a Wesley.

Mr. Lewis has sent us a picture of Marvin and Mary Wesley.

If you are interested in the Wesley family, Mr. Lewis might be able to furnish more about that. There has been a book published on the Plunkett families.

McCLUNGS MOVING WESTWARD:

Bill Davenport contributes this: Marriage Records of Fleming County, Kentucky 1798-1851
Name: Joseph McCloung
Spouse: Margaret McRoberts
Marriage Date: 17 Mar 1825

Can anyone help us identify this Joseph McClung? Fleming county is in the northeastern part of KY. It is possible that he is from the Greenbrier branch as Joseph was a popular name among them. Does the McRoberts name ring a bell with anyone? Joseph does not appear to be in the indexes for the KY 1820 or 1830 censuses. He may have been there shortly and moved on to Indiana or . . . ?

QUERIES:

From Diane Weir: I have been researching my family from Ireland for quite some time now. My great grandmother's name was Elizabeth (McClung) b. abt. 1839 and she married John Hemphill. Her father's name was Byre (McClung) and her mother Elizabeth Walker. I have put this surname in parenthesis as it has been transcribed incorrectly in many of the records and shown as McClean - always with a question mark beside it. However, I have found the Hemphill tombstone and, while it is almost impossible to read, we think her last name could be McClung. They lived in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada and had 4 daughters one of whom was my grandmother. They came from Ireland but I do not know exactly where and they were Presbyterian. ([email protected])

We have a letter from a Edith McClung, in Missouri, she was the daughter of W.O. Stout. Our line is thru the Stouts. My husbands grt grandmother was Amanda Stout. She was once married to our Isaac Anderson in Ohio. He died in the Civil War. Amanda married Addison Williams and raised many children near Dayton, Oh. We have a hundred plus year old letter from Amanda to her first son, Milton Anderson.,, which is our grandfather. Edith mentions uncle Henry Anderson, of her love for him; Henry was a brother to Isaac. Edith tells of her brothers and sisters. Do you know anything about these McClungs or Anderson's ? we would like to find a living relative because there are many unanswered questions. Henry & Elizabeth Stout lived in Thayer, Mo. Edith McClung lived at Koshkonong, Mo 1930. Thanks for any help, The Andersons ([email protected])

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beverly Eye ([email protected]) writes: My father was a Charles McClung. He was born in WV in 1903. He had a brother, Dick (nick name). I am not sure of his mother or father and that is what I am looking for. They are from North View in Clarksburg, WV. I am looking for my grand parents names and on back.
