THE McCLUNG FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

February 2003

Designed to Bring Together Research on McClungs Everywhere

Editor: Judith A. McClung

Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing of volume 31 are listed as "New".

The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions. In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.

IRISH/SCOTTISH RESEARCH:

Letter from H. Juhling McClung

I joined the Wigtownshire Rootsweb site,

[email protected]. As my introduction to the group, I gave them some of the family tradition as to where the McClung family started in Galloway, Scotland [Wigton].According to the Reverend McClung, the family left there in 1690 and then left Northern Ireland in 1730 for the new world. I also included some of the possible variations for the spelling of the name. In the first 24 hours I have already received several interesting replies. I have copied 4 of them them below. I will continue to keep this group informed as to what I learn from this group.

Juhling McClung

In the 1694 parish list for Glenluce there is an Anna McClunge listed at Commris (Camries?), sorry no further information, hope this helps.

Both these names [McClung and McClurg] are still around here. I do not know which came first.

[JAMES MCCLUNG IS LISTED IN THIS ROLL !]

In the website of the 1684 Examen Roll which is a church register giving the names of all adults over the age of 12 years there are McCLUNGs. The site is: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~leighann then on the left you will see "mkerlie" go to that then again on the left go to "lists 1684". There is on that site also a variation in spelling list and under McLURG you get McCLUNG, McCLUNGE, McCLURG, McCLURGE, McKLURG and the later form McLEOD. McCLURG is a very old name and is even in a story about Robert the Bruce on his wonderings in Galloway. McCLUNG I do not know how old it is. McLEOD is the latest version of the name that I know of used from the mid 1800s onwards. Scotifying what was probably originally an uncommon Galloway and Galloway Irish name. Good luck searching for them but do remember that the PRs may have them down as McCLURG etc.

The McClung name is still around. My husband's family are from Ballantrae in Ayrshire and the Colmonell cemetery has lots of them buried there. I can go back as far as 1776. I don't know if they are the same family as went to Ireland as I cannot make a connection with them.

Thanks Juhling. We will look forward to hearing more.

ARKANSAS McCLUNGS:

This is from John McClung of the Alabama Circle:

William Joseph McClung was born January 24,1850 in Jefferson County Arkansas. He was the third child and first son born to David and Mary (Harrison) McClung who lived and farmed in Darysaw Township of Jefferson County which was later divided to make Grant County. David was born in Talladega County Alabama in 1825. David and Mary Harrison were married in Talladega County on August 5, 1845.

William Joseph lived in Arkansas with his family until 1866 when he moved to Cedar County Missouri with William Shelton family who lived near the McClung family. It seems possible that David McClung may have died around this time and this could have caused him to move. David is not in the 1870 Grant County census, but his wife Mary and remaining children are.

In 1869 William married Nancy Melvina Shelton the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Stewart) Shelton. She was born January 4, 1849 in Marion County Tennessee.

After they were married they moved first to Jackson County, Missouri, and then returned to Cedar County Missouri. In March 1878 he purchased 40 acres of land from Shadrack Chandler & wife for $200. The land was the N.E. of the N.W. Section 36 Township 34 Range 28. Recorded in book R page 602 Cedar County Deeds. In November 1880 he purchased another 40 acres from D.P. Stratton & wife for $1,500. The land was the S.E. of Section 29 Township 34 Range 27.. Recorded in book R page 359 Cedar County Deeds.

They had seven children, six sons and one daughter. David Lawrence b. 1870, Andrew Sylvister b. 1872, Bartley Leander b. 1873, Melville Lafayette b. 1876, Middleton Frank, b 1878, Delilah Bell b. 1881, George W. b. 1886.

In 1890 they sold out and moved to Indian Territory stopping to live on land owned by the Kaw Indians near Washunga. Later they leased land from Indian owners until the opening of the Cherokee Outlet in 1893. William J. and his three oldest sons David, Andrew and Bart went to the Kansas line to make the run, but; not finding any land to their liking returned home. They continued to live on Indian land farming the Arkansas River bottom land, and raising cattle and hogs. By 1900-10 William J. had purchased 160 acres of land on the west side of the Arkansas River. Andrew, Bart, and Melville each purchased 160 acres from Indian owners on the east side of the Arkansas River. A few years later Bart purchased another 80 acres.

William J. and Nancy continued to live on their farm north of Uncas, Oklahoma until she died on December 12, 1922. He later moved into Newkirk, Oklahoma, where he died on March 2, 1925. They were both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery south of Uncas. However the cemetery was moved to the I.O.O.F cemetery south of Ponca City, Oklahoma, because of the construction of the Kaw Lake Dam in 1968.

GEORGIA McCLUNGS:

Some descendants of GA McClungs went to MS. Can anyone identify yours in 1840-50 Censuses. If you can send in the transcription. we would appreciate it.

There was a Jane McClung in 1850 LA census index. She is in Orleans County on page 226.

We have found several Georgia McClungs in the listing of Land Patents. Maryann Gentzel sent in the listing for Alabama. We are trying to identify all the people. If you can help with any that have a question mark, we would appreciate it. There were several Georgia lines that went to Alabama.

Maryann found William W. McClung in the 1850 census of Campbell County. The AIS Indexing system did not have him listed, so we missed him. She found this on an internet site: You can see her posting at: 1850 Campbell Co. GA.

Michael McClung has been adding to our records of Robert McClung after they went to AL.

GREENBRIER McCLUNGS:

Thomas McClung has developed a website for the descendants of Capt. Samuel McClung who fought in the French and Indian War. This is at McClung Genealogy. He has done a wonderful job and will be able to bring this line down to the present. He is covering the Greenbrier File 192.

MARYLAND McCLUNGS:

From Mardi Carter:

I am wondering if you ever came across Daniel McClung from Hamilton, OH. He was a lawyer and married Charlotte S. "Lottie" Gordon 10 Nov 1880. She was from Havana, IL, but they married in Springfield, IL. They moved to Hamilton and lived and she died about 1886. They are supposedly buried in a cemetery in Hamilton. I am interested in death dates and burial sites. I don't believe they had any children. I descend from a sister of Charlotte's father. ([email protected])

Reply:

Your Daniel is the son of James McClung b. 1822 and md 1842 to Miss A. Lesourd. They lived at Monroe, OH and had about 10 children. Daniel M. McClung was b. 1850. He was an attorney at Hamilton, OH. This is from McC Gen. 1904. Robert line.

SOUTH CAROLINA McCLUNGS:

Bill Davenport found in an internet search that there was a Samuel McClung in Chester Co. South Carolina:

Mc Clung, Samuel, Jr.
State: South Carolina Year: 1820
County: Chester Dist. Roll:
Township: Page: 44

If you have the transcription for this, we would like to share it.

We heard from a message board posting for Newberry county from Amy Cleland Gilreath:

I have an early Sarah CLELAND m. James McCLUNG. Sarah was the dau. of Robert Cleland & Sarah Jane Plunkett of Newberry Co., SC. There is a Deed 30 Dec. 1818 Newberry District, SC - Plat Location Book A & B [1806-1821] ... James McCLUNG; 232 acres on head waters of north & west prongs of Beaver Dam Creek, adj. to James Cleland, Sr. & James Cleland, Jr. and others. Also, Robert Cleland, Sarah's father mentions in his will - Newberry District, SC Private Estates - 6th - My reason for not giving my daughter Sarah McCLUNG anything under this Will is that I have already given her all that I intend her to have of my estate.

NOTE: This is James McClung, the fourth child of James and Mary Reece McClung. We have no info on their children, if any.

Second letter from Amy Cleland Gilreath ([email protected]). 27 Feb 2003

I am really a CLELAND researcher, however, James McClung appears several times throughout the Cleland family line. I really hadn't looked at it that closely until I answered you, as it is not my direct line. Now, I'm as confused as you and hope we can figure it out. All of my note will be from Newberry Co., SC and it looks as if I have several generations of James McClungs.

My first Sarah Cleland, who m. James McClung, was b. ca. 1810 and was still living at the time of her father's will in 1856. She was left nothing as she had already received her share.

What is confusing is I show James McClung with 232 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek next to James Cleland, Sr. & James Cleland, Jr. [James Cleland Sr. would be Sarah (Cleland) McClung's grandfather]. I had assumed this was the share she had received - but just noticed the date on this is 1818. She would only have been 8 years old.

Now in 1835, Mary McClung sells to Robert Cleland [Sarah's father] track of land - 232 acres on Beaver Dam Creek, it being part of a tract which James McClung, dec'd. was possessed in his life time. So this James McClung, husband of Mary __ is deceased by 1835, the date of this Deed.

I have the following children of James and Sarah (Cleland) McClung:
i Robert McClung b. ca 1831
ii Charles M. McClung b. 22 Feb 1834 d. 27 Jan 1889
iii John McClung b. ca 1835
iv William P. McClung b. ca 1837
v David McClung b. ca 1845
vi James S. McClung b. ca 1847
vii Beauford Barnett McClung b. ca 1849
viii Thomas W. McClung b. ca 1851
ix Lafayette McClung b. ca 1852
From Newberry Co., SC Census 1850-70

I also have a James H. Cleland b. 21 Aug 1815 d. 10 May 1892 AL, married Sarah McClung on 9 Dec 1838 Newton Co., GA.

Also, Sarah B. Plunkett b. 5 May 1819 d. 23 July 1899, m. John J. McClung in 1843. Sarah was from Newberry (her mother was a Cleland) but later moved to GA.

There is a James McClung in Newberry Co., SC as late as 1866 witnessing Deeds.

QUERIES:

From: [email protected]

I've lost Gary McClung who lives in Minnesota. Can't find his e-mail. Would you send it? Thanks. Mary Ann

Note: We don't have a list where the email addys are matched to names. Sorry. Gary, please write to her.

From Jack Scott: I am still looking for the connection to David Johnstone McClung & Catherine Sarah McClung who are the great great grandfather and grandmother of my wife, Lorrie. They are the Gainsborough McClungs from Saskatchewan and Ontario, Canada. [email protected]

****from Dr. John T. Palmer, 878 Wildwood Trail, Santa Rosa, CA 956409, tel 707-538-0252

Need parents of MARGARET MCCLUNG b 22 Aug 1836, probably Fayette Co, AL m ROBERT GREGORY DAVIS (son of ALVIS DAVIS and ELIZABETH B. GREGORY ) on 23 Oct 1856, probably Fayette Co, AL. Both Margaret and Robert Gregory Davis are buried in the Weeks (Old Alabama) Cemetery near Utica, Hinds Co, MS. A relative thinks that Margaret may be the dau of Eli McClung and Frances Powell of Fayette Co, AL or of that general area. I have found no confirmation of that relationship. Does she descend from WILLIAM ELIAS MCCLUNG (McClung Genealogy, p 225)? Any help or suggestions for my research will be deeply appreciated.

From Margaret Morgan ([email protected])

I am researching the McClung family for a friend of mine. I am stuck on his great-grandfather James Robinson McClung. Here's the information that I do have.

James Robinson McClung b. 7/5/1896 d. 7/25/1986 in Florida. His profession was a medical doctor. He married Helen Virginia Meek (b. 5/23/1897 Wheeling, Ohio County,WV. d. 2/13/1981 Indianalantic,Brevard County,Fl.) on 8/19/1919.

1920 Census has them living at 92 Stewart St. Morgantown, WVA. They have James listed as J.R. McClung w/ wife Helen. He is 25 at that time and listed as being born in W. Va. Neither he nor his wife is listed as working. (perhaps still a student?)

1930 Census has them living at Eureaka Ave in Wheeling, Ohio County,W.Va. His occupation is general practioner at age 34 and he is listed as James R. McClung. He is living with his wife Helen and their children:

James Clayton age 8
Thomas Robertson age 6 (friend's grandfather)
Dorothy Kathryn age 5 mos.

James Clayton McClung was born on 9/2/1921 in Dawson,Greenbrier Coubty, West Virginia. He married Mary Rose Whyte in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Va.

Dorothy Kathyrn McClung was born on 11/8/1929 in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Va. She married Orin La Verne Blair,Jr. on 4/26/1950 in Beaver Falls, Beaver County, Pa.

Thomas Robertson McClung b. 12/21/1923 Richwood, Nicholas County, W.Va. He died 5/21/2001 Satellite Beach,Brevard County,Fl. He married Joan Marjorie Weltz on 10/3/1945 in Sequina, Texas. His occupation at time of death was retired USAF.

If anyone has any information that connect me with James' parents and grandparents I would really appreciate it if they were willing to share information.

-----NOTE--Perhaps some of you Greenbrier McClungs can help out here. Nicholas Co. sounds like Grandfather Billie's bunch.
