Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions
of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family
Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing
of volume 31 are listed as "New".
The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung
Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions.
In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you
have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.
John McClung has updated the Hugh II line with some corrections.
The 1860 census has most of the transcriptions added. Please check this against
your records. See if any of the family files need to be updated. Notice the Reuben in Russell County, born in 1824.
Suzy Burt has sent in some pictures from the Rev. David Line:
Sons of John G. McClung (Rev. David's family): John E., David Reed, and Joe H.

We have added some pages on allied lines on the Georgia Main Page. Bill Davenport sent
in more information about the Linn family. If you find documentation about any of these early families, we would
appreciate it if you send it to us.
A follow-up on the search for Hugh Linn by Katherine Cochrane: I was hoping that there might
be a way to see if this Hugh Linn had a daughter who may have married
John McClung's father, explaining why John McC. was apprenticed to
someone in a different state by his relatives in Georgia. However,
according to notes I found about Hugh Linn's will, he had one son,
Robert, and three daughters. The only daughter whose name was
mentioned is Susannah (apparently not married at the time his will was
written in 1785). The other two are mentioned by their husband's
surnames, neither of whom is a McClung.
So we still have no way of knowing if Hugh Linn was John's mother's relative. However, it was a Robert Linn
that gifted Reuben McClung.
Alice Rowten has updated the information on the family of Henry Suel McClung in the Sewel
McClung family.
Sandra Humphries Raedel is updating File 171 for Charles McClung who md Charity Vandal. Their descendants are found
in census records in Edmonson and Butler Counties in KY. The Kentucky censuses have been updated with added transcriptions.
Sandra Humphries Raedel has updated File 165 for some of her own family.
These are the URLs for marriages from the Rockbridge County, Virginia GenWeb project. You should copy/paste them for
access.
I had a difficult time getting back to the LINK I found from the main page. In case you do too, thought I'd send
actual LINK to the page that lists EACH grooms & brides starting with the letter M. It has PHOTOS of the marriage
licenses (jpg file) ATTACHED to their named link too!
The early KY censuses have been updated and have the John A. McClung from McG:87. He was
the son of John and Elizabeth Alexander McClung from Fairfield, VA.
We have posted the early censuses of Maryland. These include 1800, 1810 and 1820 transcriptions
from Heritage Quest. If your records differ from these, please advise. In this record we must use various spellings
to pull up the record as they are indexed. We may not have found the way they were all spelled.
Diane Gerrard has sent in some pictures for the John William McClung family. You can see them at the
McClung Album Index.
We have transcribed and posted the IOWA 1860 Census. We find several families from New York,
Ohio and Indiana here.
The transcription for Missouri 1860 Census is posted. Most of the folks in Mo at that time
were from Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
From Keith McClung of Parkersburg, WV
I have been talking with an older relative who is in the McClung line. I have been all over your site, but I am having
trouble finding my connection. My GGrandmother is Louisa Schinn and she married James. A McClung. They were in
Shinston, WV area where her parents donated the land to the city. Her father was Levi Schinn. Can you lead me in
the correct direction to find more information via your website? He did not send address so it can be forwarded. (2/14)
I have been researching the Hill family in Gwinnett County and have run into a dead end with regards to something
I found in History of Gwinnett County, Georgia 1818-1960 Volume II. It listed that Joseph Hill, son of Joshua Hill,
Sr. and Cinthia Ridgeway, married Sarah McClung and that they had two children, Gatsie Hill and John Hill. I have
not been able to find anything else about this family. Do you have any idea who Sarah McClung might be and who her
parents could be? I have found Joseph Hill on the 1850 Census in the Cains District of Gwinnett - he is living in
his father's household and is 15 years old. I have not found him anywhere after this and have not been able to
locate a marriage license for him. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. From Pam {[email protected]}
We have added the transcriptions to the Kentucky Census records for 1810 and 1820. These
have McClungs from Tennessee and the PA/VA lines and the Greenbrier lines.
We have seen that Heritage Quest is about to release the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses. That will be a blessing for
many of us.
We are transcribing much of the 1860 census. Be sure to check all of these if you are searching for records of those
who cannot be found. People are turning up in different places than anticipated.
In working with family updates, it became apparent that some of these recent bios include materials that could be
used by identity theives. Please review what is posted about your family to see if we should delete some of the info.
We wouldn't want our records to cause anyone trouble or inconvenience.
PHOTOS: If you are planning to send in photos, please contact Judith before naming photo files. Every file that we
have goes into the Freepages databank under one major file. We MUST give each file a unique name. Eventually we will
have ID numbers we can use. Also, when naming a file, keep it as short (9 digits) and simple as possible. Some
of our photos have transferred but we cannot pull them up. The links are not working and we haven't figured out why
some do and some do not. Avoiding punctuation marks is helpful. Hyphens work. Freepages is case-sensitive so we
have to watch that too. You can send in identifying information about a picture without trying to put that as the file
name. If you have several pictures about one person, just name them Jno-a or Jno-b, etc. Then give the description
in the email. Hope this helps.
We have asked for folks who would be willing to copy off the newsletter and send it to a previous member who does not
have computer access. We appreciate any of you who would volunteer to do this and will keep this list updated.
You can e-mail me at Judith McClung if you have
corrections or additions to our records. Please keep us informed if you find discrepancies in our records and yours.
We want a good record.
