Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions
of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family
Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing
of volume 31 are listed as "New".
The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung
Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions.
In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you
have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.
Laura Buckner writes: An oral tradition in our McClung background is that our line
was descendent from William McClung and Susan T Marshall, sister of Chief Justice
Marshall and cousin to Alexander Keith McClung, the Black Knight of the South a son of
William and Susan.(The widower of one of LMT's daughters{our direct ancester} actually
references this "fact" in his wife's obituary!) My research has not confirmed any of
this but I haven't been able to find much either about Alex Montgomery McClung's
parents. Do you have any information as to where these KY/VA McClungs fit in? Sons
of William and Susan T Marshall: Thomas, John Alexander, Alexander, Joseph, Samuel,
Alexander Keith, and Robert.
Also My records include reference to two more children of Alexander Montgomery: John
Montgomery who died in TX and Jamaica C.L.C.P. McClung no additional info on her.
Also according to Madison Co records Alexander went by "Montgomery" in many documents.
The William who died in Madison county could not be the William who married Susan T.
Marshall because that William died in 1811 near Maysville, Kentucky. It appears that these
two Williams were of the same generation. Further information is sought.
Two of our Georgia men married Nix women. John Jr. married Rebecca Nix and Hiram married
Alcey Nix (2nd mg). We think both of these women might be daughters of Jeremiah Nix. You
will notice that they named children Jeremiah. That is not a McClung name. Here is a
question from a Nix researcher:
Kathy Hayes: a decendent of Jeremiah and Lousia Frances Webb Nix
of Randolph Co, Alabama. I surf on your family webpage; I have a Rebecca Nix daughter
of Jeremiah and Lousia Webb Nix that lived in 1850 in Randolph Co, AL.Im researching
my Nix family. Could this be Rebecca Nix in your line? I do have records of the Mcclung
family in Randolph Co. because several Nix married into the McClung family. I have a
Hiram McClung married Alcey Nix and John Fleming married Lousia McClung who was a daughter
of Hiram McClung and Alcey Nix. Does anyone know who was the father of Alcey Nix.

Suggestion: Look for the probate records of Jeremiah Nix.
From Bill Davenport: After further recent research finds, I have come to the conclusion
that the information we currently have on Samuel G. Scott and wife, Margaret A. is
incorrect. The new info rules out the possibility that they should be included among
the descendants of John McClung, Revolutionary Soldier.
Although records in Nancy McClungs pension file refer to a Samuel G. Scott and wife
Amanda as kin and witnesses, it seems that the Samuel G. Scott and Margaret A.,
residents of Yell County, Arkansas, that we had previously included in our records,
are not the same persons referred to in the pension file.
John McClung and Nancy Lusters daughter and first child, born about 1825, is listed
in various places as Amanda, Arminda, Aminda, Aminday, and Armintha. Based on the birth
date of 1825, I have concluded that she is also very likely the Almira who is listed
with Nancy McClung in the 1850 census for Sumner County, Tennessee.
Jane Underwood is working on the descendants of William W (son of Reuben and Polly)
"I have many newspaper clippings, old family Bibles and such.
Dennis McClung Blues Band in WVU Libraries' West Virginia Collection:
West Virginia University libraries requested a copy of "Prisoner Of The Blues" for
inclusion in the West Virginia Collection. The West Virginia Collection preserves
important parts of West Virginia heritage, including music that is considered
important to West Virginia's history and culture. It is located on WVU's downtown
campus in Morgantown, WV.
Thomas McClung has sent in a graphic of the Marriage Bond for Sarah McClung. She was
Joseph, Joe Bush's, daughter. She is on page 198 of the McClung Genealogy, 5-5.
The hand writing on the top document is that of Joe Bush. He signed his name at the
bottom of the document. This is Thomas's 3rd great grandfather. Harry McClung of New
Hampshire sent the document to Thomas. You can view it from file 192 and Bond
File #153 has been updated by John Pomeroy. This information is under Grizzley Alex.
It is the family of Ulyus Frank McClung. The name should be Ulysses Frank McClung, b.
1874. He married first Hattie Isenhart, and second to Icy Mae Minter.
Children were: ?, age 21(I have never been able to identify this person), Junior, age 19,
Hilda age 20 months, Ulysses Harold, age 11 months and Catherine L. age 1 month. Icy was
the mother of the three small children.
Ulysses Harold was born in 1928, Lewis County, WV and died in 1984, Dickson County, TN.
He is listed at SSDI as Harold J. McClung. His daughter said that his name was Ulysses
Harold and doesn't know where the Harold J. came from. We just always called him "Pa
Harold." Also, he served in the Army and they transposed his name to Harold Ulysses
and that is what is on his military marker.
Ulysses Harold McClung, b. 1928, Lewis County, WV, d. 1984, Dickson County, TN, was the
son of Ulysses Frank McClung.
Ulysses Frank McClung, b. 1874, d. ?. He married 1st. Hattie Isenhart, 2nd. Icy Mae
Minter. He was the son of James Alexander McClung.
James Alexander McClung, b. 1839, in Harrison County, VA, d. 1920, Harrison County, WV.
He married Louisa Shinn. She was possibly his second wife. His father was Charles L.
McClung.
Charles L. McClung, b. 1805 in Augusta County, VA. He married Sara Gabhart (Gabbart).
She may have been his second wife. His father was Charles McClung.
Does anyone know about this family from Augusta County, VA. They do not appear in the
listings in the McClung Gen. 1904. Write to: [email protected]
Bill Davenport has tracked down a reference to a John McClung Bible dated 1820 and
printed in Vol. 8 of the Watauga Association Bulletin. We have sent off for this and
excited to think about which family this might be from. The Watauga Assn is from
Northern Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
Debra Dean has worked to update the file for Charles McClung. She
has learned more about his family and we have it posted.
Richard McClung writes: I was born 11/8/61 in Santa Maria California. The oldest son
of Maxey Leroy McClung born 9/20/37 in Seminole Ok. Youngest brother to Joe McClung
and Louise Sikes. Sons and daughter of Joe Wiley McClung born (I don't have the date,
but I will get it) 1906 I think is the year, somewhere in Monroe Co. Mississippi. His
father came from Glen Allen Al. and Mother came from Winfield Al. her maiden name was
Pruitt. If you can help Richard, we can forward your email. His addy is suppressed.
My name is Katy Soper. My great, great grandfather was Cyrus Alexander
Rupert. Last weekend we held the first Rupert Family Reunion near Rupert, WV.
Found your website while doing some research. My great great grandfather, Cyrus A.
Rupert, was 42 when he married Rachel Elizabeth McClung, who was about 16. They had 15 children all
with names starting with "L." My great grandfather was Leancy Rupert. Leancy married
Mary Ella Carpenter. If you are a McClung/Rupert descendant, write to Katy at [email protected]
Sidney Hardwick Kratochvil writes that she is the great granddaughter of Lewella (Lulla) McClung and Franklin
Feamster, and the granddaughter of Harriet Sidney Feamster.
"I have been trying to locate photographs of Lewella (and Franklin) and
photographs of her parents, J. Madison McClung & Margaret Hannah. Would you
happen to have any photos that you would be willing to share or know who
might? They would be copied and returned in a very short period of time.
Or, they could be sent via email as jpg attachment. I have viewed all the
photos currently on your website. I sent emails to Thomas, Helen, Valerie
McClung and Al Zopp today. They were listed as McClung researchers on your
site. I'm hoping one of them might possibly have a photo." Write to:
John Houston writes: I have been looking for Miss (?) McClung that moved from
Pennsylvania with her family to Virginia. She married my Great Great Great Grand
father. They had four sons and three daughters. My G,G,G, Grandfather was born in
1764.
The only location in Virginia we have on him is Keath's Post Office, Collins Valley,
Lewis County, Virginia. It is now in West Virginia. My G,G,G, Grandfather was from
Lancaster County Pennsylvania, I'm assuming the McClungs were also from that area.
Further information would be very much appreciated. email [email protected]

In 1995 we received the 1860 enumeration of McClungs in Harrison County from Robert
E. McClung. The address at that time was 933 Blackwood Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32303.
Since Lewis County was cut from Harrison, this Census might
help.
Cecil John McClung is my grandfather. My dad was born in West Virginia and moved to
Ohio when he was very young. We have a Cecil in the Greenbrier files #160 with ID #
508. John does not know if this is his family. Can anyone help out here? Send to:
[email protected]
You can e-mail me at Judith McClung if you have corrections or additions to our record.
