THE McCLUNG FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

June 2003

Designed to Bring Together Research on McClungs Everywhere

Editor: Judith A. McClung

Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing of volume 31 are listed as "New".

The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions. In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.

ARKANSAS McCLUNGS:

Jenni McClung wrote in about J. A. McClung: My husband is Alan McClung. His father is Ray McClung. His father was J.A. McClung. J.A. McClung is in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (I think that's the name) for his song, Just a Rose Will Do. These McClungs are rich in musical talent. A lot of them, including my husband, write songs and sing beautifully.

We need the enumerations for the 1860 censuses where we have McClungs. The Census Index for 1860 gives the counties where there were McClungs married. We have added the Columbia County transcription.

GEORGIA McCLUNGS:

Pat Smith has updated the Jonas file. She is a descendant of William Eddington so has added to that file.

We need marriages for Newton and Haralson counties in Georgia.

GREENBRIER McCLUNGS:

We have added some more cemeteries to the Greenbrier listing. They are at Cemeteries from Volume 29 of previous Journals.

Be sure to send in your family updates and hope we have some success during the summertime visits.

MARYLAND McCLUNGS:

In Robert Jr's file is a Samuel McClung who served in the Revolutionary War. He moved from Maryland to Washington County, Pennsylvania about 1807. After an act of Congress, when the soldiers could make application of pensions, he went before the court in Washington County, PA. He presented his case to Alexander McClung, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. It always helps to have a relative as your judge ! We hope he didn't have to make application three times like the John McClung of Georgia who applied in Tennessee.

SOUTH CAROLINA McCLUNGS:

Keith Fletcher has written in with the information on the wives of Josiah McClung. You can find it at the Rister/Fletcher Connection. There is more work to do done to locate information on Josiah's mother, Jemima and what her connection was to the McClung family.

Debbie Dean has written in that she is a descendant of Charles and Margaret McClung. Charles, b. 1810 in SC who moved to Newton Co., GA and was a wheelwright. He lived two doors down from David McClung who married Mary Johnson.

Debbie states: My g-grandfather David Lee McClung was born in GA 1845. His parents are listed in the 1880 census as being from SC and NC. The IGI individual record has David being born 1845 to Charles and Margaret McClung in GA. She is listed as being born in 1809 and they were married 1830 in GA. David Lee McClung was born 1845 and died 1911. He married Sarah Taylor in Hempstead Co. AR. They moved to TX at some point in time and they died here and they are buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Mt. Vernon TX.

. As for his brothers and sisters I know he had at least 2 brothers. The others we didn't have any info on. I know that he and his brothers had a falling out and separated in AR and went their own ways. My grandfather was very tight-lipped about any info on his fathers' family members. There was evidently some bitterness involved. Debbie Dean.

We had thought that this Charles might be an uncle to Josiah. However, Josiah was born in 1804 and Charles born in 1810 would indicate that they were brothers. It could be that it was this Charles and Josiah that had the falling out. They both went from AR to Texas.

Charles b. 1810 remained in Newton Co., GA until after 1850. After that we don't have him in a census. He could have been in AR or TX. The 1860 AR Index shows a Charles in Hempstead County. Does anyone have this enumeration? Can anyone help?

We do not know the name of the first son of Charles, but he named the second son James, next son Needham (not a known McClung name), then the next one David. His last son was named Charles. The James, David and Charles are names in the James line from Newberry County. We just are not sure of the relationship between Jemima Crawford and the James McClung family.

The Census Index for 1860 gives the counties where there were McClungs married. We have added the Columbia County transcription. It is some of the South Carolina McClungs who were traveling with the Plunketts. If you know who this widow, Nancy is - or the James McClung with Charles Plunkett, please respond. The James, son of John K. and Sarah Plunkett was said not to have married. He was born 1843 in Newton Co., GA, according to records, so the date doesn't quite fit. We do not know the children of the James McClung who married Sarah Cleland but we are not sure they came to Georgia.

QUERIES:

Can anyone identify who was the Judge Alexander McClung who heard the petition of Samuel McClung given in the Maryland McClungs above? Alexander lived around/in Washington, PA or perhaps was from the Pittsburg area. We have not yet found him in the 1904 genealogy.

RESEARCH:

HELP -- we need someone to scan in previous Journal pages. We have only posted about one third of these. We will send you the pages to scan, then you email them to us. They need to be changed from graphic mode to text. Judith can do the coding for the html. Hope someone has time to do this.
