Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions
of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family
Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing
of volume 31 are listed as "New".
The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung
Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions.
In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you
have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.
Regina L. Rea of Pensacola, FL
has written to us about her ancestor, Jane P. McClung who married James Earl Rea in Bibb County. We
find her in the 1850 census with Charles. Charles is found in the Morgan County 1830 census and it
appears that his father is the John McClung born in 1770s. Charles was born in Tennessee in 1796. He named
one of his boys Carlisle H. That sounds very much like the Hugh Carlisle in the family of James White
McClung of Huntsville. At this point we have no idea how these families are related. We have posted
this family of John McClung in the Lost Limbs section. We hope that some of
you will help us make the connection of Charles to our McClung lineages.
From Cheryl Bellows. I believe that I am a descendent of Mahala McClung, daughter of David Lawrence
McClung. If what info I have is correct she would be my gr gr grandmother on my mother's side. If she is
my gr gr grandmother she married a Philip Archibald Walker Dec. 22nd or the 28th, 1878 in Washington,
Grant County, Arkansas. Why I believe this, is that the family has always known her as Mahala Amizon
McClung. Marriage license says her name is Martha A. McClung. The 1880 census has her as Delila Walker.
I am somewhat confused. Would you have any information on her? If so, please help enlighten me. Also
would this be David /Mary's daughter? And where would a James McClung be located in all of this? He is
listed with her in the 1880 census as well as Philip Walker husband and son Rufus 7 months old. My gr
grandfathers name is Rufus. I'm still confused. Please Help. Thank You again and my email is:

We are looking at Mississippi County in Ar as the place where Lastley McClung from AL settled. We found
him in the 1830 Crittendon County but that was divided approximately in half in 1836 and the new county
was named Mississippi. The 1840 census does not find him there but A. J. McClung was. He is not
listed in the 1850 census index in Arkansas.
Curtis E. McClung wrote in to give further credance to the idea that the Jonathan in Marion County was
the same one as in Talbot Co. Here is his note:
Jonathan married Lucinda Askew in 1842 in Marion County. The seven children listed in the May 2004
McClung Newsletter were born of this marriage. In May 1864 at the age of 42 Jonathan enlisted in Co.B,
31st Ga Regt. (Ga. Volunteers or Ga. Militia) where he served 11 months before the war ended in April
1865.
Lucinda Askew died in 1885 and Jonathan married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Benson. From this marriage two
children were born, Morgan McClung, born 1888 and William Curt McClung (My Father) born 1890.
Jonathan McClung died February 1, 1904 and is buried in the Old Bethel Cemetery, Marion County, Ga.
I have no information regarding the death or burial place of John McClung, Jr. his wife Rebecca or
Jonathan brother, Frank M. McClung.
Olin McClung was following up on the name of John, Jr.:
My Sister's family Bible did not go back further than our grandparents. The information in the book
appears to come from Marie McClung Johnson, daughter of my father's older brother. I'm not sure she is
still living. My sister has a letter from Marie, who was interested in genealogy, dated September 2,
1986 that says and I quote, "Our McClung was John Lewis from Gwinnett County, GA." "John Lewis McClung
moved from Gwinnett County to Talbot County GA. 1850 Census - Talbot County; John McClung m. Rebecca
Nix." Note she left out the middle name, Lewis. My sister has the book and there is nothing more in it
except the passages I have given you before, relative to the McClung's.
Karen Kessler Cottrill sent in the connection of Bronson D. McClung to our Greenbrier families. He is in
file 153, a descendant of Jim Slick McClung. John Alderson McClung is a son of Herman E G1838. Karen
says that these lines need to be proven out. Can anyone verify this lineage? We find Herman in the 1900
and 1910 censuses of Nicholas County, Wilderness district. We have updated the file with these children.
We find that Herman is listed in the 1870 census of Nicholas Co. with parents Stuart and Emeline. He
had two older siblings, twins: Mason and ella born in 1857.
Kelly Boyer has updated File 178 with the children of Lula McClung and Ephraim
Losch with the help of Karen Kessler Cottrill.
The McDannald (Donoley) page has been updated. It is linked from File #187.
Bath John's eldest son, Robert, married Martha (Patsy) McDannald so all their descendants would be
interested in keeping in touch with research developments. C.E. McDannald just contributed a land
patent
issued from Augusta County, VA in 1751 for land on CowPasture River. The wording is very interesting
because it was colonial and issued from the king.
David Emmick has shared a wonderful site (created by his brother) about the Civil War experience on
Sewell Mountain. http://www.geocities.com/amickranger/
Although this is mostly about the Sewell Mountain Amick family, included in the Amick Rangers were several
McClungs. You will love the pictures and music.
Laura Charleson found that the date for James B. and Mary McChesney was wrong in our family listing.
It is now corrected in the James II file with the marriage as given in the
Augusta County marriage records.
Anita McCLUNG & I continue our research in trying to figure out WHO is the father of Charles
McCLUNG (b. between
1805 & 1810 according to census records). Charles was born, and married, in Augusta Co., VA was
(married to Sarah GABHART August 07, 1834). By the 1840 census, he shows up in Harrison Co., (W)VA
Census and remains there until his death on August 22, 1868. We've been working on Charles for, well
over a year, maybe two (2), unfortunately, with NO success. We, suddenly, have two (2) possibles, but
nothing on EITHER (James, nor Kott McCLUNG). Might you, or another on the McCLUNG board?
WHO does this McCLUNG family belongs? He was mis-indexed as James McCLARY in the 1810 VA Census. The
census READS James McCLUNG. It reads as follows:
Anita McClung is working to update the family of Capt. Henry McClung in the James
II line. He lived at Staunton, VA. She has updated the James II file more than once this month.
Debra Dean is researching the descendants of Charles, son of Jemima. She has updated that file. She found
that his son, David Lee, married Sarah Taylor in Hempstead, AR. Sarah's father was Hope Zachariah Taylor
the man for whom Hope, Arkansas was named.
Bill Davenport found material on a Sarah McClun that piqued his interest. He has sent a number of references
to the Quaker McClun family. We have posted them all on one page: Quaker McClung
Records. Perhaps there is a descendant who will help us add this information to the family pages
section: Quaker McClungs.
John McClung (AL) has helped us identify some of the people in the Texas Marriages.
HOUSTON/McCLUNG CONNECTION: Richard Long writes: Do you have any
information on a Mary McClung that married a Thomas Houston? Thomas was
from Pequea, PA and was said to have left there to go live in VA with his
McClung cousins. He married a Mary McClung, he went with some of his wife's
people and Andrew Mellvain, to form a settlement in Virginia. He wrote a
letter to his nephew Daniel Houston 2nd, of Cannonsburg PA in 1835, the
letter stated he was moving to IN where several of their children already
lived. We find both Mary and Thomas buried in the Hopewell Cem. in
Rushville, IN. What I am trying to find is the McClung connection, who was
her family? If anyone has any information that would help, I would greatly
appreciate it. Thomas was the fifth son of John Houston, the immigrant, and
John had a cousin by the name of John, who started the Gen. Sam Houston
line.
FindAGrave.com is an online database of grave sites submitted by volunteers around the world. The
site now lists over 5 million graves and is growing. When on the site you may click on a person's name
and it will pull up other information. This is not documented info and is only as good as the
submitter's records.
When you write in, be sure to give your name. Most of the time all we get is the email address
and sometimes not that. We want to give credit to those who contribute.
Judith recently did a presentation concerning land records and deeds using
some of our McClung records as well as Ballengee and Caldwell references. It is amazing what can be
learned from the land records of our ancestors. You might enjoy following the links from this presentation.
You are welcome to use it if you are teaching a class.
You can e-mail me at Judith McClung if you have corrections or additions to our record.
