THE McCLUNG FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

March 2004

Designed to Bring Together Research on McClungs Everywhere

Editor: Judith A. McClung

Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing of volume 31 are listed as "New".

The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions. In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.

ALABAMA McCLUNGS:

We are adding some of the deeds to Limestone County Deeds record where before it was just the index. The James in Book 1 is the son of William and Euphemia Cunningham McClung. His wife is the Margaret Montgomery. The James Montgomery is probably her father.

We did not find a McClung listed in the Limestone County 1840 Census but the annotations show an Abigail McClung who married Jesse Moore. She is the daughter of Hugh. Her bio has been updated in the Hugh Jr file. Jesse Moore was found in the 1860 census of Jackson County with a new wife, Mildred, so Abigail had probably died before then.

The Alabama Research Log has been updated. It also includes Arkansas searches as many from Al went to AR.

The 1860 Mississippi Census finds some children in Chickasaw County. The probate records/guardianship might let us know who they belonged to. There was also an Alexander McClung who might be related to Alexander Montgomery McClung. We have a descendant in the group who should write in to let us know if there is a connection. All these young people were born in Alabama.

ARKANSAS McCLUNGS:

CRITTENDEN COUNTY:

Marriages are updated with:

McLUNG, Jane to Oliver P. Lyles-13 Aug 1848, p.12. Jane is 17 and of Crittenden. Oliver is age 22 and also of Crittenden. They were married in Jasper Twp by Samuel G. Gilbert, J.P.

McCLUNG, James W. age 33 to Eliza Wallace, age 16; md 17 Nov 1853 by TBA Peeler, J.P. They were both of Crittenden County.

Note: James W. McClung is also listed as Justice of the Peace and performed marriages for others 6 Aug 1857 and 4 May 1858. The above marriage to Eliza appears to be his second marriage. His eldest son was named Robert who was born 1844 in Ark. James W. was born 1820 in Alabama.

Checking the 1860 census of Crittendon Co., AR, we find that Margaret McClung was probably the mother of these three. She was born 1796 in TN and probably married one of the older McClung men in Alabama. This is not Margaret Patrick because she remained in Huntsville. Can anyone help us resolve this mystery? We have posted queries at the Roots Web Crittenden County messageboard. Deed records from this county might also help.

We have updated the 1860 census transcription for AR: Crittenden County to include:

NAMEAGE / GENDERB.PlaceOccupationreal est/pers.prop.Notes
Oliver P. Lyles32/MTNLawyer25,000/8,000md Jane McClung
Jane Lyles28/FAL--nee McClung
Willie Lyles8/MAR
Charles L. Lyles4/MAR
Mary Lyles2/12 FAR
Thomas F. (Y?) Morris17/MIrelandLaborer

This family also had land patents registered in 1848:

James W. McClung (Vol. AR: 1780.098) Land Office: Helena dated 1 Nov 1848. Doc #4792, Cash Entry; Part 1 NE NE, Sec. 27, Twp 7 N; R 8 E. 40 acres.

John S. McClung (Vol AR:1730.321) Land Office: Helena; dated 1 Nov 1848. Doc # 5045. Cash Entry. Part #1: NW NE, Sec. 15; Twp 9N; R 8 E. 40 acres.

Margaret McClung (Vol. AR1730.094) Land Office: Helena; dated 1 Nov 1848. Doc #4798. Cash Entry. Part # 1: NW NE, Sec 27, Twp 7 N, R 8 E. 40 acres.

It isn't known if seeing the actual documents would yield any more genealogical data.

Margaret and her family have been added to the Lost Limbs file under Alabama. They may be the family of the early James McClung.

Just heard from the messageboard. Margaret is the Montgomery woman who married James the eldest son of William and Euphemia Cunningham McClung. James was born in Wilkes Co., GA. The family moved to Blount Co TN where William died. Then James moved to Athens AL and then on to Marion, AR - that's Crittenden County. Will get all our records straightened out.

GEORGIA McCLUNGS:

On the Reuben line:
Mary Gentzel writes: I just returned from the Jackson County Georgia courthouse. I photo copied the Inventory of Micajah Williamson dated 28 July 1804. The last line of this inventory says: ... all the property shown to us by Polly Williamson the late wife of the said Micajah which she claims as her own right by virtue of the last will & testament of her Father Jacob Early.

Micajah is actually Micajah Jr.. Micajah Sr. was married to Sarah (Sally) Gilliam Williamson. Micajah Sr. and Sally were the parents of at least twelve children, one of whom was Mary (Polly). So now we have two Polly Williamson's! (Polly the wife of Micajah Jr. and Polly the sister)

I typed Micajah Williamson into google and there was quite a bit of info on them. Micajah Sr. was a Rev. War soldier. He lived in Wilkes County, Ga. turn of the century. Sally Williamson was appointed guardian of William Jefferson, Elizabeth and Polly orphans of Micajah Williamson March 4, 1800. source Early Records of Georgia, Vol. I, Wilkes County. GREENBRIER McCLUNGS:

Harry McClung has sent in the Parole Document from the Civil War service of Capt. Thomas Walker McClung (#325 in file 141).

---------------------------------------
Sandra Humphries Raedel is helping to sort out the information on the three Icy/Icie McClungs. She has updated files #160, 165 and 174 for these ladies. If you have information to help out, it would be appreciated.

---------------------------------------
Debbie Withington has updated file #174 for the children of Ladula McClung #3550.
---------------------------------------

In File #187 in the descendants of Robert, we have William Lee McClung who married Edith Basha Caldwell. Some major achievements have been made on the Caldwell lineage for those of you who descend from this couple. Three generations added take us back to Ulster.

***********************************************************************************************************
PA/VA McCLUNGS:

The 1860 Census of Bath County has been added to the database. It includes some relatives of John and Sarah McCutcheon McClung. Their son, Robert, married into the McDannald family. For those interested, we have been in touch with Clyde McDannald, researcher, who found that the McDannald name was changed in Augusta County from Donally. All of Robert McClung's descendants would be interested in that. You will find the link in Greenbrier file #187: McDannald.

In the 1860 Census of New Jersey we find some McClong/McClung folks who are not a part of the New Jersey section so are probably descendants of the PA people who went to NJ. Would you check your records and let us know if you can identify these people. They are not in the index to the old McClung genealogy.

POINTS WESTWARD McCLUNGS:

Found some MARYLAND McClungs in 1860 Michigan census. The Anthony, b. 1810 in Ireland again demonstrates the continued migration from Ireland.

***********************************************************************************************************
CANADIAN McCLUNGS:

Janet Hamilton writes: I am trying to find information about Florence McClung. I thought she was a daughter of Nellie McClung although she may have been a sister-in-law. She may have lived in Edmonton in the 1900's. I checked a website about the Nellie McClung family and a Florence is mentioned but then this rootsweb does not mention her. email: [email protected]

QUERIES:

In reading "Band of Brothers", an Earl McClung is mentioned several times: "...he took more chances and volunteered for more dangerous jobs than any other man in Easy Company"...among other quotes. Do you know which, if any of the family branches he might belong to? The book does not mention any background....just that he was a great "Kraut hunter". It was WW2...Easy Company was associated with the 101st Airborne and parachuted into France on D-Day. I first heard about him when I was watching Band of Brothers (on HBO), and they mentioned a McClung. The book (by Steven Ambrose) has several references to him. From Kim McClung

---------------------------

From Joe McClung ([email protected]): Thomas joined the Quakers back in Ireland and came first to Pennsylvania, then to Virginia. I am also a descendant of Thomas McClun, without the g, by direct male lineage. I am interested to know how his line develops before him. Does anyone have any information on that? My understanding is that he was born in Scotland. I would like to know about his father and his fathers before him if possible. (Joe is descended from Thomas father of Thomas Jr., father of Nathan and father of Joseph).

Marian is looking for the parents of George Washington Caldwell born 24 March 1804 Botetourt County, VA Died around 1873 in Fayette county WV. Married on 4 Oct 1827 Greenbrier Co., VA to Minerva McClung b 23 Jan 1804, Mt Lookout, Nicholas Co., VA. [[email protected]]

RESEARCH TIPS:

Sandra Raedel gives this tip: Whenever I look for something at YOUR website, I can do a Google Seaarch. I always type in "Judith McCLUNG" and the name of my SOUGHT McCLUNG. Bingo! I have any page & every page that you have entered, without having to delve thru links in order to find the possible page, if any more information, etc. It truly WORKS!!!

The links to pictures this month are working better. Mostly a matter of getting acquainted with new equipment.
