THE McCLUNG FAMILY ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

MAY 2003

Designed to Bring Together Research on McClungs Everywhere

Editor: Judith A. McClung

Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing of volume 31 are listed as "New".

The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions. In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.

ALABAMA McCLUNGS:

Another of the papers from William McClung's probate file #955 from Madison County has been transcribed, typed and posted. This is a list of purchases in 1817-1818 from an A.B. Rose. He was probably the proprietor for a general store. See Rose Credits

There are some interesting conclusions to be drawn from this listing. We can tell that there were females in this household: perhaps a wife and/or daughter. This was a married man as the purchases were often for "Father". This indicated that in failing health, others were buying the coffee for him. The women were buying yard goods as well as hanks of silk (embroidery floss?), milinery supplies of wire and flower, and satin. We note that the pocket book shows up on the inventory of the estate.

The item purchased on Feb 18, 1818 could not be deciphered. Would you folks who have a copy of this file, see if you can determine what was listed there?

The index to William's estate has been linked/listed at the Database Index under Madison County, Alabama. It was previously linked from William's bio and remains there as well.

ARKANSAS McCLUNGS:

We have posted the 1860 census index. There are about 30 entries. If you have the transcriptions for these, please email them to us so they can be posted. These entries may help us solve some of our puzzles in Georgia, Alabama and elsewhere. If you know who some of these folks are, please inform us and we will post that in the notes section.

We do not have access to an index for the 1870 that would be complete enough to use. Does anyone have a good one?

GEORGIA McCLUNGS:

We have updated the Georgia Lottery file. This was a most unusual way to disseminate new land acquired by the state. They registered people to draw based on residency and sometimes military service. They had to pay a fee to register ($18 in 1832) and if they won, they were granted that land. Sometimes the lucky drawers settled on the land and sometimes they sold it to interested buyers. We have searched some of the land records of these counties to determine the disposition of the land. Not all of them have been searched/found. Check the database.

GREENBRIER McCLUNGS:

Kathleen Tassone is searching for Armenta Catherine McClung (G1007 in file 174). Armenta is the daughter of Madison and Martha E. Martin McClung.

The obituary for Sarah Anderson McClung, wife of Wooster N. McClung has been posted on our site. See: Obits Donations by Kate Tassone.

Debbie Withington writes in that she is a descendant of Ladula McClung. He is in the file #174 and is G1035. We hope to add more information to this file. If you can help, write to: [email protected]

File 187 of the Bath County VA McClungs has been updated by James McClung, a descendant of Everett Dewitt McClung in the John Jr. line. We found that Luther Brown McClung was not showing up in the searches for 1880, VA because they recorded him as McClurg instead of McClung. Some of these bios have been updated.

PA/VA McCLUNGS:

The 1880 Census of Virginia has been posted at: 1880 VA. The page numbers reference the old McClung Genealogy, 1904. Check for your families and inform us if your families need to be updated in the family listings.

Frank Strickler noticed an error in the second family of William. We gave all of John and Mary Stuart's children to someone else. We have posted the corrections on this. If you have printed out this file for reference, please do it again.

Do look for errors in the typing project. It took months and may contain more errors. Please inform us if you see anything that doesn't look right.

Peggy Reviere has sent us the children of Margaret McClung who married Robert Tate. This is in the Second Family of William toward to top of this file. We have posted it as sent as it has some very interesting research. This was posted separately as we do not usually give this much info on the women's families.

Ruth Shapard Moore has updated the section on Hugh Lawson McClung who married Rachel Kibby Trigg Morgan and 2) to Anna Gillespie. She is interested in their daughter, Blanche, who married Maj. Thomas Shapard Webb. This is also in the second family of William of the PA/VA group. Her email addy is: [email protected]

It is good that we are getting all this interest in the PA/VA group. We have only had this section posted for a few months. Folks are finding us through the search engines. We hope to bring it down to the 8th generation and get the corrections done. Please notify us when you find something in error. Document your records as much as possible.

I'm looking for any information about my great grandmother. Margaret McClung. She was married to William Templeton on October 26, 1854. William was killed in the battle of Cross Keys and Margaret married my great grandfather, James Strickler on June 5, 1865. They both died while my grandfather was young, and he was raised by his half sister.
Frank Strickler. email [email protected]
We sent him the connection from William McClung's second family in the PA/VA branch (p.99).

I am a descendant of Margaret A. McClung b. 5 Oct 1755, Russell, VA. She married in 1774 to Robert Tate b. 1745, Augusta, VA. I found a book in a library in Indiana on the McClung Genealogy. As best I could figure, her parents were John McClung b. 1731 in Ireland and Elizabeth Alexander b. 28 Oct 1735 in Ireland. (This is also in the William file, 2nd family)

Looking for my ancestors & my mothers maiden name was McClung, her father was Henry Thomas McClung, born 1865 (?) & died 1963 or 1964 in Bham, AL. He worked for the Southern RR & was a conductor. He married Lillie Mae Stovall from GA & she was born July 10, 1899 & died Dec. 21, 1984. Any info you can share will be appreciated.
