Note: Our website is divided into two sections: the Database where abstracts and transcriptions
of original records are posted. Some of these were previously published in the McClung Family
Association Journal. These are referenced by volume and page. Those since our last mailing
of volume 31 are listed as "New".
The other part of the website is for family listings. We have started with the McClung
Genealogy (1904) by Rev. William McClung and have attempted to correct errors and omisions.
In some cases whole lineages have been added. We are adding the family album pages. If you
have pictures to send, everyone would like to see them.
I am hoping you or someone you know will have a birth date for my great grandmother Martha J. (McClung) Hamilton. I
have been checking periodically to see if new information has been added since I moved from California to Oregon. It
seems you have added information on the Alabama McClungs, William A. McClung who is my great grandfather and Martha's
father. I have had conflicting information on her birth year and nothing on her birth month or day. Any information on
this part of the McClung family history would be greatly appreciated. [email protected]
The 1870 Census has been improved. There are still a few variant
spellings that we cannot pull up on Heritage Quest. They were from the AIS indexing.
The 1810 and 1820 censuses are included in the Virginia records.
Regarding the marriages of John McClung, Sr., H. Juhling McClung posted this at the McClung Surname board at Rootsweb:
"Evelyn Witick, raised this possibility based on a number of comments in Chalkley. She printed this in a long letter
in the McClung Genealogy Newsletter. I reviewed her work and was convinced that she must be right. I have recently
had contact with Mollie Bowling who points out contradictory information in Chalkley that suggests that it was another
'John' McClung that was being referenced. To confuse the matter, Wayne Masterson has pointed out, with good logic,
that it would seem that the original John McClung - 1706 had at least 2 wives, possibly 3. This is in part based on
the birth dates of the children and where you think they may have been born. It would seem, on the surface, that he
at least 2 families, one in Ireland and one after he migrated from Pennsylvania to what is now Rockbridge County,
Virginia. Wayne felt that Rebecca Stuart would have been the last wife, but he wasnt sure that she was the mother
of any of the children. [None of them were named Rebecca, but several grandchildren were. ]
I have tried very hard to locate any Rebecca Stuart [Stewart, etc] in the old Augusta area. I was unsuccessful. I tried, but not nearly as hard, to locate any Stuart families in Pennsylvania. I did not try Northern Ireland or the Wigton area of Scotland. I also tried to locate a Widow Stuart in the Augusta area. Again, no success.
I share your question and would like to hear from anybody who has tried to work through the problem.

Gary McClung of Loudoun Co. VA writes: I see the McClung Genealogy of 1904 has a mistake with my grand father's

1970, m. Lena P. (Hedrick) McClung, b. Aug. 12, 1892, d. Feb 18, 1971, End Of The Trail Cemetery, Clintonville,

Virginia Smith has updated the John file with information on
Justin Otto family, s/o Alexander Waugh McClung. McGen:126. This brings her line down.
The 1820 Census of Virginia has been posted. Some items have not
yet been found on Heritage Quest as compared to the AIS index. Even though the Heritage
Quest images have been enhanced, we cannot guarantee a perfect transcription of our McClungs.
If you find an error or discrepancy between your record and this one, please notify us so we
can go back and check it again. We use these records to check the families to see if we have
omitted any children or families from the Family File records.
Bill Davenport found the second marriage of John McClung (McLong) who was the oldest son of John,
p. 116. He was born in 1742 and md 1st to Sarah Clark. This second marriage was in Cambridge, NY to
Anna Scharp 16 Nov 1768/9. As more and more early records are coming on line, we will be able to fill
in some gaps. Be on the lookout for the early records.
The 1860 Census of Pennsylvania has been posted. Besides the PA McClungs
we find some from New York and several McClungs just over from Ireland.
It is headed "Seen And Heard" by J.A. Dunn July 25, 1929. This is only part of the article, the other part refers to
James M'Clung and a scurmish with 5 Indians.
William M'Clung, a son of James M'Clung died at his residence one mile east of Greenback. Loundon county, Tenn.,
Feb. 14, 1837. He probably received his education at Liberty Hall Academy, now Washington and Lee University. He
was in Washington's army. He emigrated from Virginia to Wilkes couty, Ga. in 1787. There he married Eupehemia
Cunningham, said to have been the daughter of a wealthy cotton planter. He owned two large farms in Georgia.
About the year 1806 he came with his family to Blount county Tenn., and lived for a year on the Houston farm, on
Nine Mile creek, eight miles from Maryville. The next year he entered a 300 acre farm on Baker's creek. Blount
(now Loundon) county. Here, about the year 1810, he built a large brick house (still standing) in which he dwelt
the remainder of his life. He was an elder in the Baker's Creek Presbyterian church for probably 30 years.
The article continues telling about William revising his will made in 1834, so far as it related to the provision
for the freeing of his slaves. it mentions his son Patrick M'Clung.
Cary Bradish has sent in updates to the descendants of Robert McClung who md Nancy Tutwiller.
Thomas file. Robert was a resident of Rockinham County, VA before moving on to Ohio in 1812. So if you find a
record in this county about Robert, you will know to save it for Cary. We will be posting more about his children and
descendants.
C. Diane McClung Curtis has updated the Solomon McClung family in the James file. This
group went from Newberry Co., SC to Newton Co., GA, to Haralson Co. GA and ended up in De Kalb
County, Alabama where many of them remained. Diane has gathered records from her family and
visited the cemeteries in AL and GA where many of these family members were buried. [email protected]

I am a grandson of george mcclung who died in 1973.His son ,my father, James was born in 1933 and celebrated
his 70th birthday last week. Both he and I were born in Portadown,N Ireland. I am a family medical practitioner
in Armagh City, N Ireland. I was born in 1965 and may have a little more info.to send later.
A nephew, William Duncan McQuagge of Panama City, Fla. has forwarded me your
McClung website. My mother, his grandmother, was Bobbie Ophelia McClung. Her
mother died when she was six years old. She was reared by her aunt, Eva
Pearl McClung (nee Monroe) in Albany, Ga. My mother married John Thomas
Duncan in Moultrie, Ga. I would be interested to know if you have
information on Bobbie Ophelia McClung, or Eva Pearl McClung, or her two
daughters, Rosa McClung DeLaughter, and Eva Pearl McClung Sloan. My mother
was reared in that family and the three girls were like sisters. I have the
genealogy of the Duncan branch, but I know little of the McClung side beyond
my great aunt, Eva Pearl Monroe McClung.
You can e-mail me at Judith McClung if you have corrections or additions to our record.
