John McClung was possibly the fourth son of James (1-1) McClung was born in Ireland probably
about 1705. He came to America about 1731 to accompany an aunt. They arrived at Boston nine
years before the rest of his family immigrated. He resided several years at Brookfield,
Massachusetts before going on to Pennsylvania.
The following church certificate now in the possession of William McClung Carlisle of
Missouri Valley, Iowa (1904) who is a descendant of John McClung, is supposed tohave been given
to John upon his departure from Brookfield, Massachusetts for Pennsylvania in 1734:
"These are to certifye that John Maclung hath Lived Several years in this Town & has carryed
Himself soberly & Christianly. That he has been received into full Communion & accordingly
communicated with us and now at His Departure Stands inchurch State free from any publick
Scandal known to us and therefore Recommend Him as a person qualifyed to Receive Church
Priviledges where ever God in His Providence may cast His Lot.
No state is mentioned in the certificate, however Temple's history of North Brookfield,
Mass., contains a number of references to Rev. Thomas Cheney. It says he was born 29 Jan
1688-9; ordained 16 Oct 1717, and died in Brookfield 11 Dec 1747, after thirty years of
pastoral service there, aged 59 years. This is confirmatory evidence that the above certificate
was given at Brookfield, Mass. John McClung moved to Pennsylvania and lived for a while in the
"Octoraro country." near Octoraro, Lancaster Co., PA. He married in PA: Sarah Laughlin, the
daughter of a Welsh family. They had ten children. His sons fought in the Revolutionary
War and one was killed in 1779. John died in 1787 in PA.

in childhood.
The second child of John and Sarah Laughlin McClung was born 5 Oct 1742. He served in the
Revolutionary War from Northumberland, PA. He moved from
PA to Cambridge, NY. He was ordained an Elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church there
in 1769. He was a soldier in the American Revolution, serving with rank of Adjutant. He
married 1) Sarah Clark of Cambridge, NY. They had one child. He married 2) Anna Scharp of Cambridge
16 Nov 1868/9 (Records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, NY, p.6) and had
one son. John died in 1810 in Cambridge, NY.
The first child of John and Sarah Clark McClung was born in Cayuga Co., NY. He had three
children.
The first child of Dr. James McClung was born in Ohio ca 1828. The 1850 Census of Ohio
finds him in Monroe Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was not married at this time.
A man bearing this name was first mate on a merchant vessel called the "Comet"
belonging to the Green Bay Line. and sailing between Toledo, Ohio and Buffalo, NY,
about 1874.
The second child of Dr. James McClung was born ca 1830. He once resided in or near
Cleveland, Ohio. He or his brother went south. He was a professional man, probably a lawyer.
The third child of Dr. James McClung would have been born ca 1835 in NY.
The second child of John and Anna Scharp McClung was born in NY ca 1781. He died in
Washington County, NY in early manhood. It is not known that he ever married.
The third child of John and Sarah Laughlin McClung was born 22 Nov 1744 probably in PA. He
was named for his grandfather who died that year. He served in the Revolutionary War in
the County of Northumberland, First Company. He was a 2nd Lieutenant 24 Jan 1776. (PA
Archives, 5th Series, Vol. VIII:641).
About 1797 he moved to Cayuga Co., NY.
He lived and died at the foot of Seneca Lake near Geneva, NY. He married Jean Strain (or Jane Straharn),
of Welsh descent. James died aboaut 1839, having lost his sight a few years earlier.
They had six children.

settler in Fayette Co., NY. He was a Justice of the Peace for many years. He married 12
May 1807 to Catherine Conklin. She was born 12 Feb 1790 and died 24 Nov 1864. They had

his brother, Charles, to California in 1849. He spent several years there mining. He later
engaged in teaching for many years. He married 2 Sep 1858 to Nancy J. Gregg (b. 1834).

W. S. Lewis. They reared four children at Sioux City, Iowa: John, James, Ida and Clara Lewis.

The fourth child of John and Sarah Laughlin McClung was born 25 Oct 1746. He married Jean
Leach and had three children. He was killed in a massacre at Fort Vreeland 28 July 1779 in
Northumberland, PA.
He fled from his pursuers and ran so swiftly that he would have made his escape but for an
Indian lying in ambush who sprang out and struck him with a tomahawk. Mrs. Elizabeth J.
Carlisle, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, gives the following account of the massacre:
"William McClung and others were holding the fort waiting for reenforcements, but were
attacked and compelled to surrender. The Indians agreed to let the old men, women and children
go free; but the young men were taken prisoners and put into a field near the fort, with a
guard around them. When reenforcements came they thought they could re-take the fort, and
so fired on the British and Indians. In the confusion, McClung went to their captian,
whose name of John Lytle, and said, 'We can make our escape now.' Lytle replied,
'You can; I will not try; for if they fail to whip the British and Indians, I hold the
papers of agreement. If I should go with these papers, the Indians would kill every woman and
child.' McClung and a comrade started to run, but the latter soon hid in a bush and was
saved. McClung passed on with great speed and succeeded in distancing his pursuers, when
suddenly he was attacked by an Indian in ambush, and was killed. Litel was taken
prisoner, but after he reached home, he said he saw McClung's scalp and knew it by the
gray hairs." It was said the Indian held the scalp in his hand and commented on the
marvelous speed of his victim.
After William was killed, Jean married 2) 19 Oct 1781 to David Martin. Rev. Hugh Magill
officiated at the wedding. (See Annals of Buffalo Valley.). They made application for
a pension for Jane as she had three children "under the age of fourteen" when William
was killed.
The first child of William and Jean Leach McClung was born April 1777. She married William
Wylie about 1798-9. He was born June 1773 and died 17 Nov 1853. They lived in Ohio and
had eight children: William b. 1799; John b. 1808; Isabella b. 1806; Joseph b. 1810;
Rebecca b. 1812; Sarah b. 1814; Martha A. b. 1819. Rebecca died 27 Jan 1855 in Muskingum
County, Ohio.
The second child of William and Jean Leach McClung. She married Henry Sellars.
The third child of William and Jean Leach McClung was born 7 Dec 1779 in a fort in
Cumberland County, PA. He was a farmer. 1 Feb 1803 he married Mary Waugh. She was born
7 Sep 1782. She died 31 Mar 1877 in her 95th year. Her twin sister died at age 93 years.
William and Mary moved in 1808 to New Wilmington, PA. They later resided two and a half
miles south of Pulaski, PA. He assisted Commodore Perry in
getting his battleship over the bar at Erie just before the final victory on Lake Erie. He
was appointed magistrate by the Governor of Pennsylvania. His height was about five feet
ten inches, hair sandy and somewhat gray in his old age, eyes blue, nose broad, face full
and clean shaven and eyebrows heavy. William and Mary had eight children. William died
May, 1864.
The first child of William and Mary Waugh McClung was born 29 Oct 1804. She married
George Wallace and reared six children: William, Mary, Adaline, Laura, Robert Smiley, Julius
Wallace. They resided at Pulaski, PA.
The second child of William and Mary Waugh McClung was born 27 Jan 1807. He was a cripple
and did not marry. He lost his leg from white swelling. He was living with his brother,
Lewis in 1880 in Pulaski, Lawrence County, PA. He died 17 July 1885.
The third child of William and Mary Waugh McClung was born 15 Mar 1809. He was a millwright.
He married 1) Susanna Bently. They had two children at Mauston, WI: Theodore McClung
who died at age of about 3 and a daughter who died in infancy. He md 2) Mrs. Emily Anderson.
They had no children.
The fourth child of William and Mary Waugh McClung was born 6 June 1811 in PA. He married
Rebecca Lockhart and had two children. Rebecca had died by 1880 when we find Charles
living with Harriette and Thedora, daughters He died 2 July 1893.
The first child of Charles and Rebecca Lockhart McClung was born 29 Mar 1840. She
married John Rowland Sep. 1859. They lived at Pulaski, PA.
The second child of Charles and Rebecca Lockhart McClung was born 12 Apr 1843. She
did not marry. She lived at Pulaski, PA.
Possibly the daughter of Charles was born in 1771 in PA. She is listed as a daughter in
the 1880 census of Pulaski, Lawrence Co., PA (p.216A)
The fifth child William and Mary Waugh McClung was born 11 Oct 1813 in PA. He married
15 Feb 1838 in Zanesville, OH to Jane Leach Matthews. She was born 10 Apr 1821 and died
2 July 1892. They moved to Wood Co., Ohio in 1845. The 1850 Census finds them in
Dublin Twp., Mercer County, Ohio with four children: Mary, John, Justin, and William.
They moved to Missouri in 1858 then on to Nebraska in 1880. They are found in Sterling
Twp., Johnson County with Otto listed as head of family (P.691B). They later
returned to Missouri. He was a cabinet maker and also devoted some time to teaching.
He is listed as a farmer in 1880. A.W. died 16 Nov 1892 at La Plata, MO.
The first child of Alexander Waugh and Jane Leach Matthews McClung was born 21 Jan 1839. He died
3 Sep 1839.
The second child of Alexander Waugh and Jane Leach Matthews McClung was born 16 Aug 1840. She married
20 June 1870 to William G. Eaton. He was born 4 Dec 1827 and died 31 Dec 1903. They
reared three children at La Plata, MO: Maude L.; William Otto, and Andrew Oscar Eaton.
The third child of Alexander Waugh and Jane Leach Matthews McClung was born in PA 5 Sep 1842. He served
three years in the Federal Army as a Volunteer in Co. D, 27th Regt, 1st Brigade, 1st
Division, 15th Army Corps. He was a farmer until advanced in years when he retired to
his home in La Plata, MO. He was married 14 June 1866 (or July 23) to Sarah Ann Meeks,
b. 25 Dec 1848 in OH. In 1880 they were in Richland Twp., Macon County, Missouri.
He died 9 July 1896 at LaPlata, MO. They reared 7 children:
The first child of John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born near LaPlata, MO 19 June
1868. He was educated at the Missouri State Normal at Kirksville, MO and at Warrensburg,
MO. He is a lumber merchant and Vice President of the El Paso Lumber Co., an extensive
concern having yards at Independence, Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs, CO. The yard
at the latter place is one of the largest of its kind in the US. It was designed by Mr.
McClung.
He married 22 Apr 1896 Evalina Clara Cunningham at Guthrie, OK. She was born in Salina, KS
to Harper S. Cunningham, attorney-general of OK. They lived in Colorado Springs and reared
a daughter there:

1900 at Cripple Creek, CO.
The second child of John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born 18 Aug 1868. She married
24 Dec 1890 to Dr. Charles Albert Mingus. He graduated at the American School of
Osteopathy at Kirksville, MO in 1898. They lived at Monte Vista, CO. and had at least
one child: EvaFay Mingus.
The third child of John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born 11 Feb 1871 in Macon County,
MO. She taught in the public schools of La Plata, MO for six years. She married 27 June 1894 to
John William Banning. He was born 10 Sep 1869. They both studied in the American School of
Osteopathy at Kirksville, MO., graduating in the class of 1898. They moved to Chicago
where she practiced while he took a post graduate course in a medical school. In 1900 they
moved to Wilkes-barre, PA. where he occupied the Chair of Anatomy, Physiology and Surgery
in the Atlantic College of Osteopathy. He was afterwards made president of the college,
and in 1904 the institution was transferred to Buffalo, NY where he continued to preside,
and at the same time carry on a private practice as an osteopathic physician. Barbra also
practiced there. They had one child: Julia Agnes Banning. Resided at Buffalo, NY.
The fourth child of John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born 27 Sep 1871. He was a furniture
dealer. He married 10 Jan 1894 to Mattie Jacques. They lived at Oklahoma City, OK. They
had at least one child: Velma Lewella McClung b. 16 Nov 1896.
The fifth child of John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born 3 Mar 1873. She married
24 Dec 1893 to Dr. Edward Burton Morris. He received his degree from the American School
of Osteopathy. His parents,Solomon and Anna Morris were intimate friends of Dr. Andrew Taylor,
the illustrious founder of Osteopathy. They resided at Ottumwa, Iowa.
The sixth child John and Sarah Ann Meeks McClung was born 2 Feb 1877. She married 11 Apr 1894

Quarter Master at Camp Dennison and at Camp Chase, OH. He became president of the Second
National Bank of Hamilton, OH. Later he engaged in paper manufacturing. He was Post
Master at Cincinnati, Collector of Customs, Clerk of the Board of Elections, and Collector
of Internal Revenue.
Col. David married 18 Mar 1862, Anna Carter Harrison (a first cousin of Benjamin Harrison,
the ninth President of the US, and the hero of Tippecanoe. David and Anna had no children.

Muskingum College in the class of 1895 and from the United Presbyterian Theological
Seminary at Xenia, OH in 1898. He was ordained by Sidney Presbytery in 1898. He served
as stated supply of churches at Palestine, Morea and Duncanville, IL. In 1902 he became
stated supply for Wesst Union Congregation, Brownsville, IL, Somerville and Eden,
Gibson Co., IN, and Scotland IN. He furnished much valuable data for the 1904 McClung
Genealogy. He resided at Scotland, IN in 1904.
The second child of Dr. John Calvin McClung was born 17 Oct 1870 in OH. To her belongs the
credit ofdiscovering the place of her ancestor's first settlement in America. She has
exhibited the quality of perseverance so essential to a successful genealogist. She
resided at Leipsic, Ohio.
The third child of Dr. John Calvin McClung was born 23 Jan 1872 in Leipsic, Putnam County,
Ohio. He attended Muskingum
College 1888-9 and Miami U 1891-2. He taught school in 1889-90 and 1892-3. He was
assistant postmaster at Leipsic,OH.
The fourth child of Dr. John Calvin McClung was born 28 Feb 1874 in Leipsic, Putnam Co., OH.
He graduated from
Tarkio College and then attended the Theological Seminary in Xenia, OH. He was licensed
to preach the gospel in 1904. He was a soldier in the Spanish-American War, serving as
private in Co. L, 6th OH Infantry. He made his home at Leipsic, OH.

Ohio. He died 5 Oct 1877.

4 May 1845.
The twelfth child of David and Elizabeth Brown McClung was born 1 June 1846. She died
29 Aug 1875.
The sixth child of Charles and Margaret Martin McClung was born 25 Jan 1798 in PA. He was
a millwright. He married 1) Jane McQuade. They lived in Eden Twp., Richmond Co., OH. They
had three children. In 1850 they were living in Troy Twp, Richland Co., OH. He
married 2) Mrs. Margaret Strow. They resided at Milton, OH. She
had no children. After her death, he moved to Fairfield Co., OH. He died 7 Sep 1880.

The second child of Charles and Jane McQuade McClung was born ca 1831 in Ohio. She
was age 19 in the 1850 census. She died in her youth.
The third child of Charles and Jane McQuade McClung was born ca 1843 in Ohio. She
was 7 years old in the 1850 census enumeration. She died in her youth.
The seventh child of Charles and Margaret Martin McClung was born 7 Sep 1800. He studied
at Cincinnati and Philadelphia. He practiced at Melmore, Ohio and was a young physician
of great promise. He died 14 Oct 1831 and was buried at Rocky Creek, Seneca Co., OH. He
did not marry.
