The birth-order of the children of William is not established. We know that Elizabeth was
born in 1724 and John in 1731. We do not know that Elizabeth was the eldest. We do know
that William had children by two wives and that James and John were half-brothers and that
Sarah was a half-sister to John. Because it was tradition to name the first son after the
father's father, we are placing James first with John as first-born in the second family.
The other dates are estimated from these. We hope that the burial places of some of these
people will be found to have markers so that we can refine this list.
The third child of William (2-2) and his second wife was born in 1731 in Ireland. He was an
Elder in the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. He was a remarkably stout and fine-looking man;
very straight, six feet high and very portly, weighing 180 - 200 pounds. He was a successful
farmer, possessing a considerable estate in land and slaves. He had a good English
education and took a prominent part in the erection of schools and churches.
He married in 1754 to Elizabeth Alexander. She was born in Ireland 28 Oct 1835 to
Archibald and Margaret Parks Alexander. She was an aunt of Dr. Archibald Alexander of
Princeton. She died prior to 29 Nov 1802. John died near Fairfield, VA in 1817. They

James, Joseph, Isabel, Esther and Polly.
The first child of John and Elizabeth Alexander McClung was born 5 Oct 1755. She was a

her hand."

John William liberated all the slaves inherited from his father. In doing so, he was
carrying out the well-known wish of his father, who during his own lifetime liberated the
greater part of them; those he retained were the household servants. All of these were
liberated by John William McClung at a time when he was $10,000 in debt, and the current
rate of interest was 30 percent. By selling the slaves he could have paid a large part of
his indebtedness and was advised to do so by his friends; but he liberated the last slave and
paid his indebtedness by what he believed to be a more honorabale method. It took him
twoenty years to pay one hundred cents on the dollar, but he finally did so, and had a
good balance left to his credit besides. At the time of his death he owned a large quantity
