The head of this family was not determined by Rev. William McClung when he wrote the McClung
Genealogy in 1904 but must be James. The first record we have found in SC is James McClung
in Newberry County in 1800. Bryan Terry sends us this enumeration:
James II. had four children born between 1800 and 1810. His wife is listed as born
between 1765-1784. It was possibly a second marriage. Four small
children were in the home but James, III. was on his own and born at the earliest in 1784.
If James Jr. is the son of James, the eldest, then two families are indicated.
We find Nimmy McClung, born 1765 in SC residing in Talbot County, Georgia in 1850 with
William and Martha McCoy. Martha was born in 1797 and could possibly be a daughter although
that date doesn't fit neatly into the census record. Nimmy is of the age to be the widow
of James Sr. We have found no one else in the general area and we have no other explanation
for this McClung born at this time in SC. Perhaps we will find a deed with her and James
signing to offer some proof of this. At this time, only circumstantial evidence would link
the two.
James III. b. ca 1784 was probably the man who married Mary (Reece?). She is listed in the 1830
census as a widow and born in the 1780s. She is a generation older than David who is listed
as b. 1800-10 so it is likely that Mary was the mother of David McClung. No marriage
records were kept in SC. The index to DEEDS in Newberry County
gives us an idea of who had land transcations. As we get the transcriptions, we may find
further information about this family. The McClung Genealogy, 1904, does not reflect
the same families as found in the census records so we have some work to do.
With Jemima Crawford showing up in the 1830 census with five daughters, we have hypothesized
that she was the second marriage for James Sr. However, we have not been able to merge the
birthdates of her children with those given in the censuses. It is thought that Charles
who moved to Newton Co. ca 1830 was her son as Josiah named his son Charles as well. However,
it is noted that Charles named his first son James. This again would point to Jemima being
the widow of the older James McClung. We would welcome anyone who could show a possible
connection or a way that the dates fit with these families. The censuses may have left out
some of our families.
The eldest possible son of James, II. and his first wife was born ca 1784. The McClung
Genealogy (1904) gives his birthdate as 1772. His place of birth
is not known. The 1790 census of SC has no McClungs, although we do not know if the area
where our McClungs lived was included. James's wife is probably the Mary shown in the 1830
census without her husband. He had died before 1830. Mary did not remarry and moved on
into Newton County, GA with the rest of her family about 1837. The 1850 census there shows
her born in 1785 in SC. The McClung Gen, 1904 gives the wife of James as Mary Reece. She
was probably the daughter of Solomon Reece as their son, Solomon named his son Solomon Reece.
The probate record for Solomon Reece would be interesting.
Living in the household in 1830 were possibly a sister from his father's family. She was born
1794-1804 and is likely the Nancy born 1805 and still in Mary's household in 1850 (Newton c)
With James Sr's 4 children (1810c) born between 1800 & 1810 and James Jr.'s in the same time
period, we may never sort out which belonged to which James. Also, it is not obvious what
happened to the children of the older James. Bryan Terry posits that the older generation
were in-laws and not McClungs. They could possibly be his in-laws from the earlier marriage.
This family resided in Newberry County, S.C. They possibly had eleven children: Nancy,
David, Jane, James,
Martha, Solomon, John K., Sarah, William, and Louisa. This family had moved to Newton County,
Georgia by 1837 where Mary and Solomon's families were enumerated in the 1840 census. James
had died before 1830.
The first child of James and Mary Reece McClung was born ca 1805 in SC. She did not
marry but stayed with her mother in her widowhood. In 1860 she was with her younger brother,
William J. in Newton Co., GA. Nancy died in 1870.
The second child of James and Mary Reece McClung was born ca 1806 in S.C. The McClung Gen.
(1904) says he married 1) Mary Johnson Conyers, GA. In 1850 they are in Newton Co., GA with the
rest of James's family. His wife is given as Mary. There is an eight year gap in the ages
of their children so Mary may be the second wife. The book, Ten Thousand Plunketts
gives David married to Margaret Plunkett. She was born 1819 in SC to Alexander Hamilton
Plunkett and Jane Reece Plunkett. David received in the name of his wife from the estate
of Hamilton Plunkett in 1864 in Newberry Co., SC. Others who were purchasers of this estate
were James McClung, Wm. Murdock, Solomon Reece (brother to Jane).
Hamilton Plunkett had moved to Newton Co., GA from Newberry Co., SC before 1860 according to this
book. He was born 28 Nov 1784 and died 24 Nov 1862. Jane Reece was b. 5 July 1787 and died 17
July 1881. At least two of their children married McClungs: Reece Plunkett, b. 1812 md
Martha McClung and Margaret md David McClung. We find Hamilton Plunkett on p. 133 of the
Newberry Co., SC 1830 census and Margaret Plunkett next door. This older Margaret was born
in the 1750s.
Mary McClung, wife of David (1850 c Newton, GA) is given as 43 years old (b. 1807 SC). Thier
children were: James b. 1831, SC; Mary b. 1835 SC; Rebekah b. 1837 in GA; and Amanda b.
1845 in GA.
David married 2) Margaret Senn 28 Feb 1855 in Newton Co. GA (LDS #325729). By 1860 they
are living in Newton County, Ga with his daughter, Nancy, living with them.
It may be that David was married three times or there may have been a misunderstanding
with the first researcher. Since SC did not keep marriage records, we may have to rely
on other records to help with the wives' names. We hope a Bible record will turn up
that will clarify relationships.
The first child of David McClung was born ca 1831 in SC.
The second child of David McClung was born ca 1835 in SC.
The third child of David McClung was born ca 1837 in Georgia.
The fourth child of David McClung was born ca 1845 in Newton Co., GA.
The fifth child of David McClung was probably born in Newton County, GA about 1848.

SC010
The third child of James and Mary Reece McClung was born ca 1807 in SC. She married
Richard Anderson.
The fourth child of James and Mary Reece McClung was born ca 1810 in SC. He married
Sarah Cleland. She was born ca 1808 to Robert and Sarah Jane Plunkett Cleland in Newberry,
SC. He is enumerated on p. 134 of the Newberry 1830 census with his wife. They
had no children at the time so they may only have been married the year before. Sarah had
died by 1850 but their family is enumerated in household #881. Robert states that he was
born in SC, age 67 = 1783. Robert Cleland, Sarah's father mentions in his will - Newberry District, SC Private
Estates - 6th - "My reason for not giving my daughter Sarah McCLUNG anything under this Will
is that I have already given her all that I intend her to have of my estate."
(From Amy Gilreath): There is a Deed 30 Dec. 1818 Newberry District, SC - Plat
Location Book A & B [1806-1821] ... James McCLUNG; 232 acres on head waters of north & west
prongs of Beaver Dam Creek, adj. to James Cleland, Sr. & James Cleland, Jr. and others.
James does not appear to be enumerated with the rest of the family in 1840 nor in 1850 in
Newton Co., GA. When others in his family moved on to Georgia, James and Sarah remained
in SC where they were enumerated in censuses from 1850-70. There was a James McClung in
Newberry County witnessing deeds as late as 1866. This list of children was
compiled by Sarah Cleland Gilreath and we have added info from the 1880 census.
We find James in the 1850 Census of Newberry County, household #887. He gives his age as
40, which would make his birthdate ca 1810. Sarah was b. ca ca 1808 in SC. The children
listed were Robert, E.M., John, W.P., D.B., J.Y. and B. B. By 1860 (HH#435) we have Sarah (age 50)
William P., 21; David, 15; James S., 13; Bluford B., 11; Thomas W., 9; and Charles M., 24.
By 1870 Sarah had died and only Charles M., Barnett and Lafayette are in the home. It
appears that Thomas W. may also have been named Lafayette.
The first child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was b. 29 Jan 1831 (Butler Family Bible)
in Newberry County. SC.
He is enumerated with the family in 1850 but we have not yet found him in censuses after that.
However, Randy Butler sent a copy of his family Bible record which gives Robert. He married
Catherine Waites 26 Aug 1858. She was born 7 July 1832 (probably SC). The family Bible
lists five who are probably children of this couple.
The first child of Robert and Catherine Waites McClung was born 11 Jan 1860. She married
Billie Attaway 11 July 1879. The Butler Family Bible has "Addie Attaway died 3 Feb 1903."
The Bible also has a possible son: James Attaway born 25 Sep 1881.
The second child of Robert and Catherine Waites McClung was born 5 Dec 1861. She married
Washington Butler 29 Oct 1879. (Butler Family Bible). The Bible also lists a Pinkney
Butler b. 26 July 1891, a possible son; Bluford Butler married Birtie Redd 30 Oct 1904. It
gives a Mira J. Butler died 23 Jan 1888, a possible daughter; and a Daniel Butler who md
Carie Smith 13 Dec 1906. (Randy Butler, researcher).
The third child of Robert and Catherine Waites McClung was born 15 June 1879.
The second child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was born. 22 Feb 1834 in Newberry
County, SC. He died 27 Jan 1889. (from Amy Cleland Gilreath). In 1860 census he is still
with his family and gave his occupation as a mechanic. He is listed in the 1880
census of Newberry County and is not married and living with his brother, Lafayette. He
gave his occupation as farming.
The third child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was born ca 1835 in Newberry County, SC.
He is enumerated with the family in 1850 but we have not found a record of him after that.
The fourth child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was born ca 1837 in Newberry County, SC.
He joined the CSA and was a Private in Company G. He died 16 Mar 1862 from disease at Adams
Run. He is probably buried there.
The fifth child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was born ca 1842/5 in Newberry County, SC.
He joined the CSA and was a Private in Company G. He died 28 Aug 1863 of disease at
Lauderdale County, MS. (Holcomebe Legion -- Roll of the Dead).
The sixth child of James and Sarah Cleland McClung was born ca 1846/7 in Newberry County, SC.
By the 1880 census he had married Elizabeth and had their first child: Julia. James was farming
and stated that both his parents were born in SC as were Elizabeth's. He served as the
administrator of the estate of his brother, Charles M. in 1889. He died after 1889.

Alexander Hamilton and Jane Reece Plunkett. We found Reece Plunkett in the 1850 census of
Newton County, GA but Martha's age appears to be 24 so that must be incorrect. Their children
are given as Mary b. 1833, SC; Sarah Ann b. 1839; Minon (?) b. 1841 and Margaret b. 1843; Nancy
b. 1845; Martha b. 1946; Eliza b. 1847; and Dolly b. 1849. All but Mary were born in GA. See
