At this point we have no idea who the husband of Jemima might have been. He was probably born
ca 1780-4. He might be of the same line as James but a comparison of the names does not give a
clue to that possibility.
Jemima is probably the mother of Josiah, Charles and five daughters. The first record
we have found of her, so far, is the 1830 census of Newberry County, SC. She was born in
1785 in SC. Her descendants found that her maiden name was Crawford.
We do not know her origins It is almost as though she
just appeared out of nowhere in the 1830 census. We have not found her in any of the land
records from SC, and so far, no other record in SC. We do know
that she traveled with this family from Newberry Co., SC to Newton Co., GA about 1837. She
appears to be a widow of one of the McClungs. Since she named her eldest son Charles, she
may have named him for her father, or her husband's father. Josiah is not a McClung name and it would
be interesting to see if the Crawford family carried that name.
Researchers of Josiah (b. 1805 in SC) report these siblings of Josiah:
Mahala b. 1815 md Wesley Plunkett; Mary b. 1820, md Marvin H. Wesley; Jane (twin) b. 1820,
md James H.L.Wesley; Beulah md John Grant; Charles who had a son named James.
Josiah moved to Harris County, GA before 1830. Then about 1835, Josiah and Wesley Plunket
with his wife, Mahala, moved to Dallas County, Arkansas.
Jemima is found in the 1840 census of Newton County, GA near Charles. She has three females
with her. By 1850 she had joined Josiah's family in Dallas co., AR. She was living with
Wesley Plunkett and Mahala.
Jemima died in Dallas Co., AR 9 Oct 1852 and was buried at Mt. Moriah, Ark. Josiah's family
moved ca 1855 to Smith Co. Texas and his brother, Charles, moved to Hopkins County, TX.
Below is a letter dated 12/24/1852. It was written by Mahala McClung
Plunkett to her sister Mary McClung Wesley upon the death of their
mother. I have transcribed it exactly as it was written.
Because of the fold and age, part of the letter is gone. Arkansas and
part of Ouchita Co., are on the scrap. Evidently folded and sent without
an envelope. In one corner Mt. Moria Ark. Turned the other way P.O.

If the Charles being talked about is Josiah's brother, then he hasn't
made it to Arkansas by '52. Also, it makes me believe that he is not
married, because Mahala only mentions Charles and the children. No
mention of a wife.
The Lee she is referring to, I think is James Henry Lee Wesley. Josiah's
brother-in-law. He is buried with Jane close to me and was instrumental
in organizing several churches is this area.
Mikel mClung..... Josiah had a son named Michael M.T. McClung. Very
little is known about him. He is mentioned in Josiah's will. He was in
Bell Co., Tx. when the War Between The States broke out. He rode with
the 6th. Tx. Cav. Nothing else on him.
Possibly the third child of Jemima Crawford McClung was born 1804 in S.C.
3-4 MAHALA McCLUNG
SC304
Possibly the third child of Jemima Crawford McClung was born 1815 in Newberry (or Anderson?)
Co., S.C. She married Wesley Plunkett 9 Dec 1844 in Coweta Co., GA. He was born 1816 in Darlington
District S.C. to _?_. By 1846 they moved to AR with her family. By 1850 they were enumerated in the
Dallas County census. By 1880 they are found in Nevada Co., Ark. She died in Columbia Co. AR and was
buried at Mt. Moriah Cem.
Possibly the fifth child of Jemima Crawford McClung was born 20 Jan 1820 in
Anderson Co., S.C. She married Marvin Hammond Wesley 19 Dec 1839 in Newton Co. GA. He was born
24 Mar 1813 in Morgan Co., GA, the son of John and Sarah Castellow (Sallie) Hammond Wesley. Marvin had
moved to Newton Co. by 1840, then about 1849 to DeKalb County, GA where he was enumerated in the 1850
census. He was a farmer.
In 1880, Marvin's mother was living with them at age 94. No doubt Mary did a lot to care for
her mother-in-law, Sarah Wesley. When asked what her occupation was, Mary put "knitting".
Mary died 30 June 1891 and was buried at Rock Chapel Cem., Lithonia, DeKalb,
Ga. He died 8 July 1896 where he was also buried at Rock Chapel Cem. They were Baptists.
Possibly the fifth child of Jemima Crawford McClung was born 20 Jan 1820 in
Anderson Co., S.C. and was a twin to Mary. She married Rev. James Henry Lee Wesley 16 Sep 1841
in Newton County, GA. He was a brother to Marvin H. Wesley, so the twins married brothers.
James Henry Lee Wesley was born 26 Nov 1822 in Morgan Co., GA to John and Sarah Astellow Hammond Wesley.
They resided in Newton Co., GA until they moved to AR by 1850. By 1856 they had moved to Texas. He
was a farmer and is found in Smith Co., TX by 1880 and was there when he died 9 Dec 1908. He was buried
in Hopewell Cemetery at Lindale, Smith, TX. He was a Baptist preacher. Jane died and was buried at the
Hopewell Cemetery (date unknown).
Possibly the fourth child of Jemima Crawford McClung was born in Newberry Co., S.C. ca 1825.(C.T. Lewis
has 1827).
She married John Grant in Harris Co., GA 3 Oct 1846.. (C.T. Lewis has 22 Mar 1846). John Grant was born
ca 1827 in Darlington district, SC. They moved with the family to Dallas Co., AR where they were
enumerated in the 1850 census. She died after 1880 in Nevada (or Calhoun) Co., AR. She is buried at
Mt. Moriah (no markers). John Grant was enumerated in the 1880 census of Nevada Co., AR as a farmer.
Many people have contributed to this record over the years: Martha Ballar, Mrs. Richard Cox,
and others. If you have information, the McClung Association would appreciate your
contributions. We hope to recognize those who have contributed in the past.
